The most challenging part of the Indian Ocean crossing - Sailing Greatcircle (ep.320)

  • Even if the Indian Ocean is one of the more difficult ones to cross, the majority of the crossing is still downwind in the tradewinds. The part from La Reunion to South Africa however is even more challenging as brutal weather systems from different direction follow each other with limited weather windows in between

    Wow, what an incredible adventure! The Indian Ocean crossing sounds like it presented some really challenging moments, but you guys handled it like pros. The drone footage you managed to capture is absolutely breathtaking, even with the risks involved. Kudos to you for taking that risk to capture such amazing shots. The music choice in this video is spot on, it really adds to the overall atmosphere. And those dolphins! What a magical moment to witness. It's clear that you put a lot of effort and attention into capturing the beauty of the sea, from the calm crystal-clear moments to the rolling swells and proper waves. Watching the catamaran navigate through it all from the drone's perspective was truly captivating. Excellent photography, as always. Thanks for sharing this awesome journey with us! Keep up the fantastic work.

    That sea was amazing and some incredible drone shots highlighted it perfectly. The sea went from flat and crystal clear, to curious rolling swells to some proper waves. It's great to see the cat going through all that from the drone's perspective!

    Wow, the footage of those dolphins! Well done. Also loved the drone footage, you are far braver than me to fly in those conditions.

    We appreciate your drone footage despite the risk mentioned. Looks amazing. Thanks for the effort.

    Lift the windward board & drop the jib track down to leeward will help unload the boat a bit & be a bit quicker ?

    The drone shots from really, really high up show well how isolated you are, and how big that ocean is. Wow. Suddenly, Great Circle looks like a speck..

    Really nice video. Can't you land the drone on the catamaran nets? Cut the power just over them so you don't cut the nets with the props? Catching by hand looks like you're risking losing a finger. I've never flown a drone so please forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid idea.

      I know people who do or try it that way. With the speed of the boat I would always prefer an approach from behind

    In regards to catching the drone, if you attached a thin light piece of steel across the legs of the drone, then use a really strong magnet on a stick to catch the drone. I don't know if this would work, but it would b worth a try.

    I see a starlink antenna. How does it perform and wich package you have? I'm sure you can give a good opinion on this. You do make some distances around the world. 🙂 Thank you in advance. Gertjan

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We bought the cheap antenna (as we’re Dutch). It works really well, we don’t notice any difference with the rally boats with the high performance dish. It uses less energy as well which is an item as the Starlink is pretty power hungry
      We chose the global roam subscription and toggle the mobility priority switch when over 20 nm from land

      @@CatGreatcircle well, with the first fish it was just bad luck. But with the second one it is indeed experience - no pictures until the fish is secured in a place from where it cannot escape, like near the cockpit table :-)
