    Whenever you show a view from the front of the boat, with the hulls slicing through the water and the occasional spray of water coming up, I lean close to my 4K TV and can imagine being there, on the water, sailing again. This is something I think I may never get the opportunity to do again because of my health. I wanted to thank you for all your work filming and editing. I appreciate it more than you might think.

      Find the position of the two vertices?

    It's so rare that we get to see boats under sail at sea from a drone. This footage really shows off the wave height, where so many other angles don't accurately represent the sea state unless you have another boat as reference. Your video production is really off the charts, above and beyond. I have been recording sound in the film industry here in Los Angeles for the past 34 yrs and I know what it takes to produce a video of this quality. You're as professional as it gets and it's about SAILING, how fucking cool is that??

    We just completed the Canaries-Cape Verde-USVI route a few days ago aboard a 50' X-5 cat. I wish we had a heavier spinnaker to handle the 22-32 kts trades. Instead, we had a somewhat fragile parasailor with max 22kts capability, and I thought that was too much. So instead we angled across the trades with main and genoa, adding several hundred miles to our passage.

    Congratulations you have the magic! Spinacker with anti-chafe on the halyard. Forget the main, rumline up to 30 knots true, it's magic!! No main just a spin. We did this across the Pacific, no main just spinacker on Stray Kitty. For a great circle route forget the marketing of self tacking and going upwind..you do downwind 90% of the time. Get a couple spinackers.. Congratulations on the successful passage. Love your photography. The main sail was probably causing the unbalance that the primary autopilot cannot compensate.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main was causing the unbalance that wrapped the spi 4 times around the forestay ones, but we managed to get it out with a couple of storm circles.
      Both autopilots (BandG H5000 and Raymarine One) seemed equally good on heading mode.
      The h5000 has a wind mode too but in combination with the waves we didn’t get it stable enough on any of the PERF modes. Maybe this can be improved by calibration but we don’t know how to do that ourselves

    Since you guys mentioned it, how tight does the auto helm/pilot stay on the Great circle Route? I mean with wind and waves constantly changing the auto pilot must be constantly changing course. Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year to everyone.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The waves were pretty constant but the wind direction was changing whenever a squall was in the neighborhood. On heading mode downwind the impact on the course over ground is limited. During squalls we were changing the heading constantly to stay max downwind in order to reduce aws

    Fantastic video and boat, she really goes well. Quick question, I think I noticed that there aren't any "Locking Pins" on the rig tensioners (Wand spanners) is there a different locking system or did I just not see it correctly? I know that you have produced some video's in the past regarding the navigation package but, if you have time/are willing, can you give a slightly more in-depth vid regarding the B&G system and how it is connected to the Wide screen display. Also curious, does the B&G autopilot have a heading hold mode as you mentioned in this video that you switched to the Raymarine autopilot. Maybe a quick comment on the comparison of the two Autopilot systems. Sorry for all the questions. Cheers

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ll have a look at the rig tensioners, don’t really know only saw them use 2 big wrenches
      The monitor is connected with a long hdmi cable
      The main difference between our hydraulic BandG and electric Raymarine autopilots is that the Raymarine only has a heading mode, the BandG has all the modes

    As you will know it is almost impossible to catch the height of waves on film or video. I once got caught in huge swells crossing Biscay in a small long keel yacht, before digital cameras. My stories of mountainous seas fell on deaf ears when I got my film back, it looked like a lovely daysail. I am very envious of you, I never did cross "The pond". I was offered a berth on the ARC but Covid got in the way. I think age makes it likely that will not happen now. Great watching others though, Bon Voyage.

    Quick question, I know I am a few episodes behind. While doing the Atlantic crossing, how often did you run your Genset? I ask as I see the solar panels on the roof and am curious how much fuel you consumed a day with running the Genset! Congratulations, that looked like an amazing crossing and so nice you did not have to do a sail adjustment three or four times a day!

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardly used any fuel, I estimate less than 25 liter for around an hour a day during 9 days.
      And yes during the downwind sailing there’s a lot of shade on the solar panels

    Grootzeil mag voor de wind met spi meer uitbetaald staan. Nu te strak waardoor deze continue overslaat (gijpt). Open zetten en de giek borgen aan de railing tegen gijpen. Dan zeil je veel sneller en relaxter.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hebben we uiteraard ook geprobeerd voorzover het zeil open kan zonder de staven te raken.
      De spi wordt er juist veel minder relaxed door en het risico om om de voorstag te draaien door de turbulentie van het grootzeil bij een surf wanneer de druk volledig uit de spi verdwijnt neemt snel toe. Erg onrustig zeker in het donker.
      Qua gemiddelde snelheid scheelt het niet veel en die winst was meer dan weg nadat we 4 storm rondjes moesten draaien.

    Why did you use the Spi all the time and not the beloved A2? Shouldnt it be a good choice as well if it is fiered enough in such downwind conditions?

      In the average 18 - 25 knot conditions it would be fine, the problem is just that it’s nearly impossible to judge upfront whether a squall will give winds (way) over 25 knots and then it will probably rip if you haven’t taken it down before. Not worth the risk in our approach

    fast and furious, a no-go is racing without life jackets and no harness, that's a kind of russian roulette game!!
    Did you test emergancy man over board at these conditions?
    Think about that and the consequences!

      a fast calculation : at 10kn the boat runs 5m/sec. What you think is your first aktion? Looking to the person in the water, but while you are reading this, just 1p sec, the person is 50m behind and from now on out of view!
      What you think what time it takes to get the spinnaker down, start the engine, turn around and go back to the position of emergency...against wind+waves...and if everything was done as fast as it is written down here? For shure 5 minutes or more...god bless you if you are lucky to find the person, but have you tried to get a half drawn person onboard? with tons of luck may be, but that person will be heavily injured, hit and smashed by the boat, the edges, the ropes you need to get her out of the see...what will be the story if the captain goes overboard while collecting flying fishes without any safety? Is your wife / your crew trained to act adequate?
      You may ask yourself if you spoiled all your lucky kismet in one go.

      I hope you got it out of your system Manni, but if not do continue for a while as we love to get good advice.
      If you would have taken the time to watch the videos as well you would have known who’s the captain 👩‍✈️ on board
