Repairing the boat in Vuda Marina - Fiji - Sailing Greatcircle (ep.281)

  • Scary moments as Greatcircle is hauled out in a very narrow slipway on a cart with a couple of wooden blocks. But it's the only place in Fiji where you can haul out a cat and they therefore have lots of experience doing this. Having 2 rudders again towards New Zeland might be a good idea as well so let's go for it.

    Great memories from Vuda marina. We got hauled out in 2019 exactly the same way as you. They had to dive down to put stones under the wheels because the tide was too low. Very nice and helpful staff. Great restaurant and bar.

Hopefully everything is good but rest assured that the marine services here in Bay of Islands are spectacular! Hopefully we'll see you here as there's already a number of the Outremers here. Hi guys, thanks for all the lovely videos. I've been binge watching for a few weeks now.
    Just a couple of observations....
    The vibration you experienced when exceeding15kn on the Outremer was probably harmonic vibration of the shrouds. The young 65 EOS has encased rope spiralling the shrouds to interrupt the wind.
    It must be very reassuring to not hear the disturbing sound of the Lagoon's bulkheads creaking. There are many videos of Lagoons having bulkhead failures. You probably dodged bullet in that 50kn wind "to go or not to go" video.
    Hope to see you in Cairns

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  ปีที่แล้ว

      The vibration actually was caused by too little space between the hulls and the engine. Larger blocks solved it. The resonance in the shrouds is of course there as well but a little piece of rope tied to them usually works

    What a nerve wracking haul out. As a fellow sailor myself, I cringed at those little pieces of wood wedged in. Then fighing a hole for the rudder to fit, because they don't have the gear to lift the boat!!!! I very much enjoy your videos-- the shots of you sailing are wonderful. It appeared you didn't antifoul the new rudder and hull repair before you went in or did you use a different colour antifoul? You'll love NZ, however watch out if you come south to Cook Straight and the Marlborough Sounds-- 60 knots is not unusual...

    Well they might do that a lot taking boats out that way. But one or two blown tires and you have big problems. No i would have waited for a port with a hydraulic lift for a lot of boats to be moved with. What a sketchy operation for moving a lot of boats in and out! I hope they get a modern lift real soon as you mentioned. Take Care!!

    I’m in Vuda Marina with a bent rudder from hitting a poorly charted reef. Can you tell me the shipper you used? Did you have to pay any customs fees? How much was shipping? How long did it take to get the rudder? Thank you so much, Aga

    I like Outremer but man they are fragile for the 1.6M you pay ! would expect a bit more. Looking at this video it feels like you pay for the form and design more than quality. I wish you luck but i have a feeling this will not be the last repair !

    • @realulli
      @realulli ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can have a sturdy boat or a fast boat. The Outremers are really light and really fast (I think if you sail hard, you can reach 18 knots), the boat turns 7 knots abeam into 7 knots of forward speed - most other boats are fighting to get the 7 knots at twice the wind and can't even dream about reaching 18 knots (not even surfing down a wave). I think Greatcircle once got to 28 knots during sea trials, surfing down a huge wave.
      So, like an F1 car, they're fast but fairly fragile.

    • @DRB68
      @DRB68 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@realulli what about a Mumby… lighter, tougher (are known to hit a reef and bounce off) and with those kick-up rudders, would have avoided the current issue with great circle… as I said… is beauty over practicality and safety.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  ปีที่แล้ว

      Strange, looking at the video my feeling is exactly opposite after hitting a reef at 8 knots and being hit by a 70 to commercial vessel…
      Maybe it’s just your love for this Mambo cat as you were kind of clear about earlier. I had a look, no comment there.
