    Great video. I’m 72 and just starting carving where I live in Thailand. I’ve been watching Doug Outside videos(great for learning) Your video looks like it will be a great help. I wish there was baas wood available here but only have extremely hard wood so it’s very slow going. Thanks again.

    Great video Mr. Stallings! Thoroughly enjoyed watching you carve a wonderful character from just a small block of basswood! No easy task! Speaking as an amateur woodcarver, you make it look easy and your result delightful! Thanks for all the time and effort you took to share this great video with us! Safe and happy carving to you and yours ALWAYS!!!

    Thanks for the great video Dennis! I personally think it is great to have a "real time" version like this at least occasionally because it gives us a chance to better understand why a particular cut was made and follow along with the carving process. If I try to carve along with a 2x replay I spend too much time hitting the pause and play buttons or having to hit rewind because my aged brain failed to store an important step! :) Garrett

    In your earlier video on sharpening Dennis, you were working with a Flex Cut knife. As I've progressed through your videos, I now see you're using an Helvie knife. Can I ask if there is much difference in the two brands?
    Living in the UK and just starting out, Flex Cut seem to be the only knives we have available to us over here and the shops I've tried in the US do not seem to ship overseas.

    • @osprey02
      @osprey02  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike,Flexcut knives are good knives, the steel is a little thicker than Helvies on the roughout knife.I have been carving since the year 2000 and have accumulated many tools.I know the owners of Helvie and try to support them and they make different style handles, that is there selling point.Keep them sharp and you will be OK....

      Hi. I got Helvies,Drake, Mike Shipley, Allan goodman and Harley Refsal knives by emailing them and ordering sizes and handles with no problems! Give it a go. I live in sheffield England. Flexcut are fine but better if ground down to flat blades. ATB.

    So at 37seconds in you show the block marked out against the finished figure. Where you say hat this is the face. Where you say face this is the body . . .

      Luis Sotol don luis lo cuchillo se puede encontrar en tienda que se dediquen a vender equipo de arte. O uno puede hacerlos lo importante es que el filo se como el de una navaja de afeitar. El tamaño de la cuchilla es a gusto de uno al igual que el mango.

      As Phyllis said, Dennis sadly passed away in April. The gouge is a Dockyards micro gouge and it looks to be either 2mm or 3mm wide (probably 2mm). Hope that helps.

    The finished work is amazing, but I wish you wouldn't carve towards yourself. Those knit gloves are not going to protect your hands, as evidenced by all the cuts and tears from your tools already. They do make gloves that are cut and puncture resistant, the ones you have on are not designed for that. I cringe whenever I see the knife or one of your other tools slip off the wood your working on. If anyone else is watching this who has worked with wood, they would agree that this is unsafe.

    • @garrettswoodworx1873
      @garrettswoodworx1873 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually Jeff those are fish filleting gloves and they provide a great deal of cut resistance. They look the way they do because Dennis carved every day and they were simply wearing out. I've worked with wood for most of my life (I'm nearing 70) and disagree with your pronouncement that they are unsafe. Are there better? Certainly, but many carvers I know use or have used these gloves and consider them safe. Happy carving!
