My grandfather would listen to this every Thanksgiving when i was a kid. At least twice. The last 3 Thanksgivings he was alive we lived in a different state, but, he would call me and we would listen to it together. 30 minute long distance phone calls in the 80's cost extra, but, it was worth it. My parents never complained. They knew I needed that every year. Now every year I listen to this and I can almost smell the pall malls in the air mixing with grandma's cooking and hear the squeak of his wheelchair as it moved forward. He would always put his arm around me and say, "Bill, it doesn't get any better than this. " He was right. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope love and peace finds you well.

A great memory. My best bud had to make sure that he was by the radio to catch this tune on Thanksgiving. WPLR FM in New Haven would always play it. I miss that guy. Happy Thanksgiving friend.

My father would play this record every thanksgiving with me, my mother and three older brothers while we all helped cook. 30 years later the family is almost completely broken up, parents divorced, brothers don’t speak to each other. I’m 36 now and my father and I are the last ones that still listen every year. It’s amazing how important this silly song is to so many people, myself included. Thanksgiving is on its way folks, remember to cherish every good moment.

Absolutely the traditional song played on loopback in my home every year on thanksgiving day, since i was a little girl. Im 57 now and its become our comfort song. I got to meet Arlo at his home in Sebastian FL in 2005, i had tresspassed onto his dock and was fishing from it. No posted signs, and i had no idea who's home it was. A giant unmarked tour bus rolled into the driveway, and the neatest kindest gentleman walked up to me and asked if i was catching anything good, i turned chuckled and said no sir, im still just fishing, he laughed, held out his hand and introduced himself as Arlo Guthrie the property owner, of course i was embarrassed and apologized, he said your fine little lady, fish all you want...

I believe you because my brother met Arlo back in the day, too. He said Guthrie was very friendly and kind. One afternoon my brother saw a tour bus in the back of a local venue. He drove to the back of the venue, where Arlo's gear was being unloaded, and asked if they needed a hand. My brother helped the roadies and met Arlo. Guthrie was grateful for the extra help and let my brother watch the show from backstage. No bodyguards, security guards, stalkers, or paparazzi. The good old days.

Wow. What a great story! I Love it. It's so good to hear that he's the kind of nice that most would imagine. Judging from the easy, light hearted humor he portrays on this album. Sadly, and all too often with many popular types, that's all that charm is. A performance. But every once in a while, a genuine gem shines through. And restores a bit of my faith in humanity. It makes me especially happy to hear that Mr Guthrie is one of those. After all, like so many other folks here, he and his classic, catchy, and wonderfully funny ditty were like honored guests in my family home every year on Thanksgiving. And still are, in my own home, one of two pretty strict Thanksgiving day traditions for my family. Thanksgiving just wouldn't be the same without us all gathered together, listening to Alice's Restaurant and then settling in to watch "To Kill A Mocking Bird" while our house gradually fills with all the wonderful aromas of the Thanksgiving family feast to come!
There have been times when I've listened to Alice's Restaurant during other times of the year, just because I felt like I needed to hear it. And I swear, even if it's the middle of April, February, whatever there's always a flash of pavlovian instinct set off in the back of my mind, that fully expects and anticipates that heavenly whiff of a turkey roasting in the oven to come along any moment... Enough even to feel a flash of deflation when reality strikes. And "Sorry. Not today!!" Slowly sinks in. Haha!! True story.
And Thanks again for sharing the story of your encounter. *Sigh* What a cool few moments that must've been!! 😊 No doubt I would hav been giddy head case the whole day. LoL😂

When i got back from deployment all of us who saw action were scheduled for a psych evaluation. Me and a few guys I served with were transported to a medical facility main side to see a shrink. When we got there we found ourselves in line sitting on benches in the hallway with about 30 more Marines from various units. We were all talking and somehow the subject of this song came up. Since we were all short timers anyway and on the way out we started singing it. The staff NCO clerk there told us to shut the fuck up but the doctor had heard us, came out of his office and joined in being an Arlo Guthrie fan himself. Pretty funny.

He must really love you to do the work needed to get it right. Whew!

When I was a kid we used to go to my great aunt's house for holidays. She was my grandmother's aunt. She was somewhere between 80 and 150 years old but I was never sure exactly. She was also an amazing cook and could pretty much cook up or bake anything we set our hearts on and she was particularly adept at making holiday meals. We lived in Massachusetts and she in particular lived in Stockbridge Massachusetts. Thanksgiving 1968 I was 8 years old and my cousin Tom was 12 and he says to me, Jack, you got to listen to this song about Aunt Alice this guy made. So he pulls out the record and put it on Aunt Alice's record player, one of those big old ones with a horn. he cranks it up and it starts playing. That was the first time I heard this song.

Every Thanksgiving on the ride to my Grandparents house, my Dad would throw a copied cassette tape of Alice’s Restaurant on. We found out that the ride to Grandmas was exactly as long as this song, driveway to driveway. We would laugh and the drive flew by. Great times.

My wife and I visited Stockbridge, Mass. about 4 years ago to see the Norman Rockwell Museum (which was fantastic) but then learned that this was the town featured in Alice's Restaurant. So, we stopped in at Alice's Restaurant and then headed over to the church. It was a beautiful sunny fall day and we had the best time enjoying the time warp of almost 50 years since we first heard Arlo's great song. To this day I use the Group W bench in talking with other people in a self-deprecating way to signify the supposed rejects that aren't allowed to sit at the "Adult Table" in life. Sadly, very few people these days remember or have ever heard of this great song and the horrible misguided war that so many Americans and Vietnamese were killed and/or traumatized in. I salute the soldiers who did their duty but despise our leaders who got us into and kept us in that war.

Sitting here listening and missing the family I once had. Lost my parents and sister over the past 3 years and this was our tradition. Dad had the album and played it non-stop on the turntable on Thanksgiving Day. We always had a full house since he was in the Air Force and all the young men that couldn't go home would be at our home. He threatened them immensely not to flirt with his daughters which we were not aware of for many years afterwards. I didn't understand the meaning until I was grown.
I miss them. I am having my two grown kids, their wives and grandchildren over this year and while I do not have the album, I do have a smart tv, so the tradition continues.

When I was 16 in 1967, I went on a day trip to the Atlantic City shore with my high school girlfriends. There was a high school marching band contest on the boardwalk that day and we met some boys in the band. We took a ferris wheel ride with them and believe it or not the ferris wheel got stuck when we were right at the top. We were stuck quite a while and one of our band companions recited the entire Alice's Restaurant for us. Can you imagine even knowing the words at that time? What an amazing experience. I listened to this completely on a drive from L.I.C., N Y to Liberty, NY on Thanksgiving Day 1976, going to visit my girlfriend and her family. The song was played on WNEW-FM 102.7 at 11AM for 30 minutes. This was the most relaxing drive upstate I ever had. Thank You Arlo Gutrie.

I grew up in W. Stockbridge, MA. The "Hippie Church" was a landmark in our area. Alice's Restaurant was in an alley in downtown Stockbridge. I have to listen to this every Thanksgiving. If you watch the movie, there's a scene where they load into the red Micro Bus and head to "The quarry". That quarry was literally in my backyard.
