Can I just ask how long you take sketching out the picture. Is it something that takes more time than the pastel less or about fifty fifty. The reason I ask is that I'm also an artist working mainly just with graphite. Pastels are completely new to me and I'm finding that the surface material is more important than anything else. I'm learning slowly but wasting a lot of time as I take a while to draw the picture and find when I put the colour down it looks like a 3 year old has done it. Which is a shame as my sketches are very good.

Oooh, Im so sorry I've never seen your comment until now Celestial. :( (Thanks, Mark!) I used pastel pencils called PITT Pastel from "Faber Castell" for this painting. I always buy them from a german mail order company called "Gerstaeker". But you could get them also from "Amazon" I guess. :) But Gerstaeker is my main source for art materials.
Though I am using Faber Casetell's pastel pencils, I have not been able to get such a bright white with them, for example with what you have done around the mouth. It's like the white appears dull. Is it because of the paper I am using, or am doing something wrong? Are you pressing down hard with the white, or putting on lots of layers of white (which doesn't seem to work for me)? Sorry, I didn't know how to phrase my question, but if you had any tips for getting a nice, bright white with the pastel pencils, it would be very appreciated! C:
Hi, I am learning pastel pencils and I have the Faber-Castell's too, this is what I have learned so far: it is important to keep a sharp point, you get much brighter white with a sharp pencil and do not press too hard but slowly build up the color. If you don't have it yet get a crank handle sharpener, I have the Dahle 133, it is not expensive and works great with pastel pencils, gives you a very sharp point, perfect both for details and layering. Paper makes a difference, currently I am trying different papers, so far I like Fabriano Tiziano paper the best but I also want to try the one that artist Colin Bradley recommends, that is Fabriano Ingres sand color. Papers like Pastelmat seem to work very well, at least from looking at videos here on TH-cam. Blending with a colour shaper helps get the pencil into the tooth of the paper, again don't press hard, add layers and blend softly so that any color looks more vivid and bright. Lastly, Faber-Castell also makes another white pastel pencil, it is labeled 101 Soft, while the one in the set is 101 Medium, this Soft White is a bit brighter, it can be purchased as a single pencil, some art supplies stores have it, but you can get a bright white with the Medium White that you have, keep it sharp :) I hope these tips help! :)
What an incredible work! Please ask me a question after I finish the work and I will frame with glass is it necessary to apply a varnish or not? I use Faber Castell Pitt Pastel. I am reluctant to apply the spray as it darkens the pastel and leaves it slightly pigmented.
I am using a fixative for pastels (Winsor & Newton Artist Soft-Fixative), not a varnish. You also should handle a fixative very carefully and sparingly, even if it's made for pastels. Do not wet your artwork! Only two layers of spraying and let the first layer completely dry, before you add a second layer. Maybe it is even better you only stay with one layer. That's on you to decide. Recently one of my artworks also darkens, because I added a second layer of the fixative, maybe because the first layer wasn't fully dried. Idk. It happens. And it is annoying. :D
moi j'aime beaucoup regarder les tutos et ce que je trouve dommage c'est de ne pas en avoir en temps réel (en non accéléré) car ça permettrait de voir comment utiliser les crayons (teinte, marque et gestes) , la gomme et l'estompe. Da nehme ich dann Papierwischer zur Hilfe. Aber ansonsten immer mit Finger. Wenn man aufpasst, das die Fingerspitzen trocken und sauber sind, ist das gar kein Problem. Den Hintergrund der Katze habe ich hier aber noch zusätzlich mit einem um die Finger gewickeltes Taschentuch bearbeitet. Das gibt ein leicht anderes Ergebnis, als nur mit dem Finger zu wischen. Einfach ausprobieren, was besser gefällt. Und pfeif auf deinen Kunstlehrer. Das Ergebnis zählt. ^^ Gesamte Arbeitszeit an Stunden für die Katze waren 15. ;)

Have you ever thought about doing commissions? Your art is so beautiful. I'm sure people who have pets would be interested in getting art made. Heck, if I had a pet I would pay you to make something similar. I bet other people would be interested.

Was man braucht ist aber Ausdauer und den Ehrgeiz immer weiter zu üben und sich von seinen Anfängerzeichnungen und Fehler nicht entmutigen zu lassen. Wenn man gerade erst anfängt mit dem Zeichnen ist es klar, dass sie nicht so aussehen wie die Zeichnungen von denjenigen die bereits jahrelange Übung haben. Aber gerade die ersten Fehlschläge entmutigt viele aufzuhören und sie reden sich ein, das sie eben einfach nicht genug Talent besitzen. Das ist aber falsch. Jeder kann es, man muss nur dran bleiben. :)
