Peter Hitchens weighs in on China covid protests | Hitchens' Half Hour 28-November-22

  • Peter Hitchens joins Mike Graham for his reaction to this week's biggest stories.
The UK has warned Beijing there was “absolutely no excuse” for a BBC journalist covering protests in China to be “beaten by the police”.
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on Monday described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and Cabinet colleague Grant Shapps said it was of “considerable concern”, after the BBC said Edward Lawrence was “attacked” in Shanghai.
The broadcaster said the cameraman was “arrested and handcuffed” while covering demonstrations over China’s Covid-19 restrictions, and then “beaten and kicked” by police.

The difference between Chinese police and ours is only one of degree. There are people criticising them now, who were perfectly happy with our police following people with drones, when they dared to take their one hour a day exercise in the - horror - countryside.

Those nurses and NHS staff had their strikes during CONvid, prancing about on empty wards. During the first lockdown I saw them all at my local surgery sat outside on the grass in the sunshine chewing the fat, not even six feet apart.

My wife didn’t, neither did her colleagues. They had to work longer hours, particularly during absence as a result of Covid infections. She was more at risk from getting Covid - which she eventually got on the ward and I ended up really sick as a result of getting it from her.

Surprised Hitchens didnt bring up the English Bishop saying Jesus was Transgender. Which is implausible by any book, interpretation or faith within the Abrahamic religions. Like with all things today there is no hope for the overriding orthodoxies that have sold out to the statusquo. This year our bellringing association has taken over a local church for xmas to raise money for the roof, which could turn out to be the most traditional service in the local community. Why? Because its nothing overrun or organised by the Kumbaya brigade.

The irony about believing in God is that if you behave as a believer, say prayers asking God to be present in your life, you can feel His presence fairly often. If you say no prayers, reject the idea of prayer, you'll never believe. -Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me the sinner- The film "Man of God" is good at showcasing these ideas.

Nurses have a duty to assert their opinions on the best interests of the welfare of patients. Pay and conditions represent significant factors as to whether the NHS has motivated staff who are at least not in poverty. Take away their right to strike and you restrict that aspect of their duty to act in the best interests of patients.

Of course nurses should be able to strike. What Hitchens is saying is that Nurses haven’t chosen to sell their labour, but have, by choice, chosen to sacrifice themselves to some falsely noble sense of duty. As Clint said “buzzards got to eat” well, nurses have a right to their happiness and that means not having their pay determined by the BoE monetary policy and the Governments fiscal spending sprees on boondoggles and lockdown payouts. Let them all strike and reveal the truth.
