When applying a brown coat over existing (painted stucco) is it important to pressure wash the house first? The house is 30 years old and the heavy finish stucco was painted. My stucco guy says he's just going to wash it down with a hose (before putting brown coat on). And he will put the bonding agent in the mix (not on the wall like you suggest). Does the bonding agent go on the brown coat or the color coat? I'm afraid he may be cutting corners and I should find another contractor?? His price is good...but... Thank you for your input :)

He wishes to earn money, that's admirable however, his ignorance his lack of understanding stucco longevity is evident. To pour the bonding agent into the mix is easy, but the entire finish will separate in less than a years. A 30 years old paint job need to be pressured wash well with at least 3,000 to 4,000 PSI, this micro etches the walls which is necessary for the bonding agent which holds the new finish. A garden hose will do nothing but waste his time. lastly he's the most expensive by far, as his work, will all need to be removed, then on top of that, a professional now charging you a fair cost. 👨🏻🔬

Very interesting and complex work Kirk. Thank you for posting and sharing. We have had a few no drain wall repair jobs like that here in W.Penna. As an added feature, I do drill through the blocks and install a section of drain pipe every 4 foot or so along the lower parts of these jobs. In every case, when we go back to inspect them, they are draining. You are right about the pressure of water behind that wall.

When I'm repairing a crack wall in a basement I break out half the inside cinder block above and I fill the cores solid.To strengthen the area. I would have removed that inch and a half cap and fill that full. I like you I like to come back and check jobs out to see how they're holding up always seems to work. And I work in the cold North. Morning Sonriyo, in most of the world, lime putty or lime plastering is used, this lime expands and contracts much less than the so-called finishes with added plasticizers. that claim to be lime, that we in the states are handcuffed to. @@dog_biter A big, No, how would the paper adhere? Every try hammering in 5 concrete nails, let alone 5,000. Besides the right way to go over stucco is pressure wash the existing, then apply a base coat or color. We do have at least 20 videos on this procedure, type in how to apply new finish over an existing. Work smart not hard, knowledge is power. 😉

Mr. Aberson, l tell all my customers, as honestly as possible, I can guess whats going on behind a retaining wall, but that's all. Oh, if only I had a crystal ball. The fact is I apply stucco. I'm not a structural engineer, so it's not up to me to suggest french drains or to call GC to drill hole or anything of that nature, but simply to apply stucco. The guy before me did a good job, but no man can contend with the earth movement.

Hi guys! My home's 50 year old painted stucco exterior that I'm going to refinish has prior surface and crack repair work done with what appears to be a chalky white product. When I scrape through the hairline or larger cracks in the painted surface, it comes off like sheet rock mix/joint compound. It's not rock solid like a presto patch. Is this shoddy work, and if so, what should I do to remediate before all the great techniques you've show us here? (base, tapping, bonding agent, and finish). I'm unsure how far the extent of it is under the paint.
Hi Patrick, I'd pressure wash anything loose and begin from scratch. No doubt only a small area may have been done with the wrong material, like using an interior plaster for the exterior. Two weeks ago we did a video where we showed removing some Plaster of Paris, someone applied outside.🕵🏼

can you change the color of Portland cement or rapid set if you add a particular sand to it ? Because I used rapid set and that stuff is super white when it dried. Its so white now it looks like I painted it.

Good afternoon Steve, any duct tape will work, I buy Eco tape personally but Sure tape works just as well after all we're only expecting the tape to last for this one day. As far as parging, your basically mixing Lime Plaster with water and painting it on a surface. When I'm repairing a crack wall in a basement I break out half the inside cinder block above and I fill the cores solid.To strengthen the area. I would have removed that inch and a half cap and fill that full. I like you I like to come back and check jobs out to see how they're holding up always seems to work. And I work in the cold North. Peace and love brother.
Howdy Paul, thank you, when it's cold you have to wait for the plaster to set. This is a time when I like to keep moving just to stay warm.

Morning Sonriyo, in most of the world, lime putty or lime plastering is used, this lime expands and contracts much less than the so-called finishes with added plasticizers. that claim to be lime, that we in the states are handcuffed to.

Can you apply paper and mesh over existing stucco?? I need to know please and thank you!
@@dog_biter A big, No, how would the paper adhere? Every try hammering in 5 concrete nails, let alone 5,000. Besides the right way to go over stucco is pressure wash the existing, then apply a base coat or color. We do have at least 20 videos on this procedure, type in how to apply new finish over an existing. Work smart not hard, knowledge is power. 😉

Hi Kirk n Jay, question: as there is expansion and contraction that caused separation. Wont this continue to happen in your new work. And you are creation a call back to fix it since you did not install a break at the base of the wall? Not alot of traffic out there today in sf
Mr. Aberson, l tell all my customers, as honestly as possible, I can guess whats going on behind a retaining wall, but that's all. Oh, if only I had a crystal ball.
The fact is I apply stucco.
I'm not a structural engineer, so it's not up to me to suggest french drains or to call GC to drill hole or anything of that nature, but simply to apply stucco.
The guy before me did a good job, but no man can contend with the earth movement.

You need an 11" drill bit.different trade . And additional work must be paid for.
Hi guys! My home's 50 year old painted stucco exterior that I'm going to refinish has prior surface and crack repair work done with what appears to be a chalky white product. When I scrape through the hairline or larger cracks in the painted surface, it comes off like sheet rock mix/joint compound. It's not rock solid like a presto patch. Is this shoddy work, and if so, what should I do to remediate before all the great techniques you've show us here? (base, tapping, bonding agent, and finish). I'm unsure how far the extent of it is under the paint.
Hi Patrick, I'd pressure wash anything loose and begin from scratch. No doubt only a small area may have been done with the wrong material, like using an interior plaster for the exterior. Two weeks ago we did a video where we showed removing some Plaster of Paris, someone applied outside.🕵🏼

what bonding agent do you use
Howdy, we used Weld-Crete by Larsons, sold online or at any plastering yard.
You can also purchase Quikrete bonding agents sold at all HDs and Lowes.
can you change the color of Portland cement or rapid set if you add a particular sand to it ? Because I used rapid set and that stuff is super white when it dried. Its so white now it looks like I painted it.

(2) I need to start/terminate a parge coat "midway" on a basement CMU wall using a fibrous bonding cement (i.e., id doesn't run the entire length of the wall). How do you start/end that edge?

Good afternoon Steve, any duct tape will work, I buy Eco tape personally but Sure tape works just as well after all we're only expecting the tape to last for this one day.
As far as parging, your basically mixing Lime Plaster with water and painting it on a surface.
It is not pretty when done, but the idea is to weatherproof and or preserve wood or walls from the rain and bugs.😏
