      I held back the emotions pretty well from when he announced that he would be playing one final game, but when the pregame video rolled with some of his highlights as a youngster, the floodgates opened right up. I remember rooting for Edgardo Alfonzo as a youngster because I played third base too, and he was great, but there was nothing like when David came up to the big club and took over that position in 2004. You just had a feeling that he was special and would be around for a long time. I'm so glad that came true.

But David Wright had to be the classiest player I ever saw. He loved the game and the game loved him. One of my favourites ever. I wish he could've gotten a ring in '15 or '06. It's debatable as to whether he had enough to get into the HOF, but he's definitely a first ballot hall of famer in MY HOF. Thanks for some amazing memories.

      Richard Sempertegui I hope you're right about the HOF. Just no WS ring and his career was cut short. I remember his power numbers dropped in Citi Field a bit because of that stupid left field porch but he always put up good numbers and you can't argue 7 all-star appearances, 2 gold gloves, and 2 silver slugger awards. Now that I look at that, you're probably right. We could debate who the best ever Met was but you can't argue that he bled Met blue his whole life. I'm gonna miss the captain. I can see him in some capacity on the team next year for sure. Thanks for the reply and Go Metros!!

Remember being so closed to getting to the ws in 2006, david wright was our leader. He could hit, he could field man hes a special player. He had one final run in 2015 coming back n hitting a home run at his first at bat at philly. We got to the ws, that was a special year. "This is love. I can't say it anyway else. This is love." - (at 20:12) David Wright, after-game farewell to fans.
    From the early '60s Metsies (who turned a city that only tolerated winners into a town that embraced its lovable losers), to the Miracle Mets (who went from last to World Champs in '69), with stops along the way for the first game after 9-11 (in 2001), and the Beatles ("All You Need Is Love") in '65 at Shea, this perennially mis-managed, always frustrating, occasionally glorious franchise has somehow managed to channel some of the highest emotions in American culture.
    Thanks, David. You deserved better.

    From a lifelong Braves fan (and Mets hater), this made me so emotional! I'm so glad the Mets gave him the final night he deserved, although it would have been nice to see him play against the Braves this past week. He was always my favorite non-Brave - such a huge shame to see his career cut short like this due to injuries.

    No matter what team you root for (I'm a Yankee fan.), you can't help but respect him for what he was able to accomplish & how much he's meant to his team. Perhaps more than that, however, you can't help but feel bad for him. All the injuries that he's dealt with have prematurely ended a truly excellent career. He's the Mets' version of Don Mattingly, so it's fitting that Mattingly was the opposing manager. #RE5PECT

    Really can't give the man a 2-1 meatball? A lot of the time the pitcher knows what's up and will serve up a fastball in the middle of the zone at least once in the final AB.

    • @strongside4565
      @strongside4565 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Not in this case. It is one game at the end of the season and it is 0 - 0 with the bases empty. It isn't like this is a final stretch Wild Card match-up where Miami is ahead by half a game. They finished last in the division. Who gives a shit if they lose?

    • @strongside4565
      @strongside4565 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Was a multi-sport athlete in high school and was a scholarshipped RT for a Division II college, so you're wrong. Having respect for veterans is incredibly important and baseball gives you a way to say "hey, you did a lot for the sport, here's one on me." Basketball and football are different because they are much more team oriented and the shorter seasons means the games matter much more. There's nothing wrong with giving a vet one for the road in baseball, especially in a game that means nothing.
      If the LDE is playing his last game against me in a regular season game, am I letting him shuck my block and get a free sack? No. That could decide the game and we only get 13 of those. Would I serve one up to a future hall of fame player when my team is 30 games out of the playoffs? Probably because that game is one of 162 that will be played.

    Gary Cohen said it best, very few players get to write the script on how they ride off into the sunset when their playing days end, I’d say even fewer deserve the honor of doing so, Wright deserved it, he was not only the face of the Mets during some of the best... and worst times, he was also a face of baseball. His loyalty to the fans, media and Mets is unparalleled given how bad they often were. David is truly one of those special talents that only come around once in a lifetime.
