Actually, it's a pretty well-known fact that the Statue of Liberty was a present from France, at least in the U.S. I definitely remember learning this in school. Very interesting video. I especially loved learning about the red bonnet as a symbol of liberty.
Hi, there are more Statues of Liberty. One that I know of is located in Ploiești, Romania. This statue was also a gift of the franch poeple, made in 1869. The statue was unveiled in 1881, it is made out of bronze, it is 3,5 meters tall and it is representing the goddess Minerva as a symbol of liberty. I wanted to put a link to a picture of it, but TH-cam doesn't let me.
As an American, seeing the wide panning shots of the Statue of Liberty with the voiceover of Paul Smith explaining its significance and beauty was truly moving. Another well-made video!
I'd guess it's just that liberty is a "fancier" word or something. I think it's mostly the difference of which is used in which kind of context. Liberty seems to be a more abstract or philosophical while freedom is more concrete and practical. But the idea is the same.
Your videos are very interesting and you have a really good French accent but there are a few things, more or less important that you often forget. For example, Marianne doesn't only embody Liberty, but an allegory (this word defines the concept better) of the French republic, and the values in it's motto, as much Equality and Brotherhood than Liberty. And moreover, Gustave Eiffel, which is the creator of the Eiffel tower, also was the engineer that conceived the inside of the Statue of Liberty. :)
Nice video It doesn't mention the fact that Gustave Eiffel was the architect of the Statue of Liberty. I do wonder about the headgear of the statue. What does it stand for? Sun rays?
@captwasabi It's doubtful there would be a United States if it were not for the help of the French during the revolutionary war. As for the recent US war for oil it's true they haven't yet got the deal they want, however, an enormous US base was built in the region and the US is in this for the long term. I'm sure they view the current Iraqi government as a temporary thing and if they can't get them to play ball eventually there will be changes. US went to war cause there was oil there.
@nishbrown I think he was talking about gender rather than her social status. Plus, if you look at the painting at 3:47 ... looks like a woman in either context, and a strong one at that!
@captwasabi By help bring Liberty to any group of people you're referring to supporting the US in the Iraq war? If so, recall they weren't lying to the world like the US as it has come out, but were urging patience. WMD were never found nor has a connection with 911. So they were correct in not rushing to war. The US broke international law by rushing in to Iraq. And Greenspan has said it was after all for Oil and not to Liberate a people.
@captwasabi Whine about the French all you wish. No one else has given the US a beautiful iconic symbol of goodness like the Statue of Liberty. Furthermore, these days it isn't the French that have been going around starting wars around the world and creating a new generation of terrorists. No that's what the US has been up to not the French. As far as rights to any claim to Liberty? I never thought I'd live to see what's happened in the US in recent times. Warrantless taps r normal now.
@captwasabi I believe there was oil in Iraq back in 1991. These issues are to large to get into in such a small space as this affords and you aren't that nice to begin with. Another bad morning? The fact is you seem incapable of blogging without being insulting and rude. If indeed the 'US Federal Court has recently found that the NSA warrantless wiretap program was unConstitutional. ' I am glad that is good news. I found this statement buried in one of your nastier missives.
For the first time I can't guess if the person is French or British. He really is mastering both languages. Bravo Monsieur !

Eiffel created the support skeleton within. Bartholi (who was mentioned) is the designer.

"She's not Aphrodite in her nighty" That made me laugh so hard XD
The head gear and the end of the torch represents, from what I recall, the Seven founding States.

"Marianne" is not only Liberty, she represents above all the French Republic (Republic which is driven by freedom :) )
Nice video

Excellent as always!
"Aphroditey in her nighty"
Isn't there a copy of the Statue of Liberty at the Suez Canal as well?
That says something about french culture... talking about celebrities being models of the liberty Mary Anne!

Aphrodite in her nighty lol, i like that expression
aphrodite in her nightie.. what does that mean?
@captwasabi Would we even have heard about Saddam had there not been oil in the region?

Haha, great speaker very interesting!

Liberty is a "Lady", not a woman.

Aphrodite in her nighty!)))
There's not really any difference between liberty and freedom in the English speaking world, no.
more of a "American guilt trip" video.
