This was an excellent description of the difference between the “Italic” and “Stub “ nibs (and architect) nibs. I have three “Italic Parker Broad “ 14k gold nibs for my Parker 75 pen, which I bought in 1973.; I use them for addressing envelopes for wedding invitations which I have done for over fifty years. I really do enjoy your videos. I am now almost 81 and still enjoy learning new things.

This should be called Nibs 101. I thank you for the education but must say I am equally impressed by what seems to be your encyclopedic knowledge of film clips that enhance your videos. Always a treat to learn from you. Thanks for all you do.

    1. What a great and thorough video, thanks.
    2. Those curious about Waverly/mini-Fude nibs can also get one pre-installed in a PenBBS 308. Not too much variation but particularly smooth, reasonably priced.
    3. For a bargain priced stub nib, look at the Pilot Parallel. Fun.

The Pilot Parallel is fun too because with two of them you can blend lines of two different colours!

This was an incredible video… with such an insightful, comprehensive “clear” and plainly-seeable explanation… there have been many that have tried this… trying to elucidate and impart an edifying distinction on this segment that marks the distinguishing differences of those demonstrated herein… Doug, this is a standing applause, the entire room on its feet, hands reddened by the amplified palm-slapping cadence clapping to what so many before have just further muttered in deeper confusion and yet, still more questions asked… You, Sir, have put an end to all the clouded and occluded sense that too many have left too many just still scratching their (our) heads… In one take, one viewing, you have defused the repeated replay of what no amount of rewind has nor can ever achieve, no, not until now. Thank you. I could name names… but let’s play nice. The only name to be given any voice here: “Doug.” Because that is the only name worth mentioning, even if a second time… lol. Great view. Please, stay safe.

What a wonderfully clear explanation of the nib types. I have been using fountain pens since age eleven. Never leave the house without less than two. Usually have three in pocket. Plus paper, or homemade note book. It was an absolute treat seeing your video. Will be watching for anything you post.

Another great video. Thanks, Doug. After years of using medium and broad nibs, I’m finally experimenting with calligraphy, waverley / fude, music, cursive italic and stub nibs. I’m still working my way through my PenBBS calligraphy nibs. The #1 is my favourite to date and the music nib on my Pilot Custom 74 has finally grown on me. Now that you’ve reminded me, I think I’ll dig out my Italix Tankard and try out that cursive italic nib. 😀

A very comprehensive, controversial video on the various nib types. I have various stub nib sizes and an oblique medium. The architect remains the last nib to collect on my bucket list. Hopefully the local pen show goes ahead and I can find a nib grinder.

This was hands down the best explanation I have ever seen of different nib types. I thank you, because I am somewhat new to the hobby - to custom and specialty grinds, anyway - and I now understand them well for the first time. The diagrams and video shots of each different nib and your explanations of each were very helpful. Congrats on your achievement and your gift from DoodleBud, and thanks for all the great information!

Nice breakdown of various nib grinds, might bolster the courage to start hacking at afew of the nibs I dislike. The most Iv'e done is smoothing, and it doesn't seem to be enough for these problematic nibs.

    Hi Doug,
In the hands of a lefty, the writing by an italic or stub will not have the same look as when it's used by a right-hander. Are there calligraphy nibs designed specifically for left-handers such that the letters would look the same as those written by a right-hander? I'm not referring to obliques.

@@InkquiringMinds wow I missed seeing that review. I think my dad gave me a Jaipur for christmas with an ultra flex nib and that was a very nice pen. They do a lot of collaboration with Click and Ranga, and perhaps another pen company, and as I mentioned, Kanwrite for the nibs. Eyedropper pens are tricky. I had a similar issue with one, not a fountain pen revolution pen, but a Platinum Preppy that I converted to am eyedropper with the aid of a Goulet pen accessory, a rubber ring to insert in the threads. It was user error. I was used to unscrewing the cap on other pens, so that I did the same to this one, when I did not need to. So the ink came out from unscrewing the barrel!
Having said that, I cannot understand the poor customer service. I received a personal email from the owner thanking me for ordering, and never had an issue with their products, though I do avoid their budget pens.

Slightly bent?? Fude ninja nibs. I bought a Lamy 2000 with an oblique medium nib which does have a nicer line than a regular medium. I’ve seen a double oblique which seemed to have a thinner line than an oblique broad. the gold nib on the Majohn titanium 2000 is still working nicely.
