As I recall (from the Schon DSGN videos talking about the monoc), the star on the monoc nib indicates which production run it is from, so it may be a different dingbat in the future.
As they are both Jowo #5 nibs, does the Diplomat Traveler nibs have the same feel/bounce as the Diplomat Magnum? I don't really know any other small steel nibs that feel the same, so curious if Diplomat is doing anything different between the two pens.
@@InksandWeens I've only used the medium, Drew/Goulet Care would definitely know better than I do. Not quite sure what you mean by "most bounce", but line variation from pressure usually gets more dramatic the finer the nib. It's got such a great price point for something unlike any other entry level steel nib, so I doubt you'd regret going with the nib size you like most on other German/European pens.
The only problem is that it leaves a small gap between the finial and cap when you do this. Hopefully kaweco will make a flush ring to keep the trim motif as well as keep a bit of spacing between the tip of the nib and cap when the pen is capped. The tolerance in there is really tight and there isn't much room for error if the nib isn't fully seated in the housing.
I'm wondering if the Kaweco was intentionally designed to be able to use the cap to take off the little piston cap... thus not having to worry about dropping it so easily...? 🤔

The alchemy inks would make it slightly more worthwhile but we also have restrictions on importing or flying in liquid amounts of more than 100 mls. Any advice would be appreciated 👍🏻💜🩶💜🩶

I saw someone use the pen cap to remove the blind cap. You leave it inside then use the cap to re-install the blind cap after filling. If that works, it's a great idea. I know that I would drop it and the cat would kick it under the fridge before I could bend over.
A blind cap doesn’t always indicate a captured converter, it just means they didn’t want the piston knob to ever turn while the pen is posted because posting is nearly universal with such a small pen. Regular Kaweco Sports can only take their mini-converters, which hold half or less than a standard international converter. I don’t know the exact capacity of the piston version, but you can tell just from looking in the ink window that it holds at least as much as a small international cartridge would, and possibly more. I’d check the Goulet listing for the exact stats.
It is not a captured converter. It just has a blind cap to eliminate any snafus that might happen given most people will post the cap to get the pen to a comfortable writing length, and how the dimensions of a modern sport make the friction area for posting on the blind cap itself rather than the barrel like a v12 or v16 sport.
The Montegrappa pen looks like the northern lights. I wish I could afford to buy all the beautiful pens I would like to from y'all, but the price is steep for my budget, and if DHL anything likr US and FedEx, the brokerage fees (that aren't charged with USPS packages) are sometimes astronomical.
I also have several vintage Kawecos, several Sports, a "Dia" an "Elite" and others. But... that was actually a different company in Heidelberg (close to where I live), now it is revived and residing in Nürnberg I think. For the revived Kaweco that's the first piston filler.

Also will it fit on any pen that uses a Jowo feed?
To answer your first question, I have the Monoc in Fine, which reverse-writes as a Medium; I believe the same is true vice-versa. It writes beautifully.
I've got a v16 in (which is actually a stub) that I adore. I received my modern piston sport a little over a week ago and am pleased to report that it lives up to it's heritage - it is a great pocket pen, I won't hesitate to get another if/when new finishes or materials are made available.
Great reviews here. All the inks and notebook you reviewed are very attractive, but I would never buy a fountain pen without a gold nib. Stainless steel? Paleeeez! That's like trying to write with a garden hose. I've got to have all the inks now and the Clairefontaine notebook.
Like you, I used to be a gold-nib snob, but I’ve learned that there are some superb steel nibs out there. Gold is softer and more flexible than steel, but that doesn’t suit every need, nor do flexibility and softness correlate very well with writing performance. One would hope that pen makers who use gold nibs would help justify the higher price with superior tuning and quality control, but that doesn’t always seem to be the case.
@@jamespicht1128 I'm NOT a "gold-nib snob"; rather, from my years of experience using fountain pens I've learned that if I want to get my thoughts on paper in a fast, reliable manner, I can either use a mechanical computer keyboard, or a nicely designed fountain pen that keeps up with my train of thought. The only nibs I've found that do that are made of alloys with a high gold content. I wouldn't use a stainless steel nib if you paid me to. They are stiff, scratchy, hard. In short, I just don't like them.
The plug/cap combo seems like a bit of a gimmick, but if they're shipping you a bottle that isn't stable on its own it only makes sense that they include something that'll allow you to safely fill from said bottle. You can always use it as an actual coaster? Being able to (re)order bottles without an included cork would be good option.
1. Thanks for the info. 2. That monoc nib is getting so much buzz. But no one, including Mr. S. himself, has succeeded in describing to me any noteworthy improvement in performance that would justify the breathtaking price. I guess the pretty design, craftsmanship and rarity are worth it for some folks.
friction fit Kaweco clips are useless, they should adopt this cap on all models. If it could hold more ink than a measly cartridge and could be made of plastic, then I might consider it. Fingers crossed for an upgraded version in the future with fun chatoyant and colorful resins
I would disagree on the friction fit clips. While they aren't as nice as the spring clip on a 2k or a roller clip on an Italian pen they keep the pen in place in a shirt pocket or if you tend to stash your pen in between buttons on the front.
This new Kaweco fountain pen with piston mechanism is a charming and coherent continuation of the Sport series. The design is an absolute success, but it has one flaw that surprises me. The dimensions of the new Kaweco are identical to those of the regular Sport model, with one exception: the section goes deeper into the cap. On the regular Sport model, it measures 3.7 cm, while on the Sport Piston, it measures 4.3 cm. For this reason, the fountain pen is 6 mm shorter. This inexplicable fact reduces writing comfort, giving the strange impression that something is wrong. That's very unfortunate...

I've been wanting a Monoc nib since I first saw one online. They're truly gorgeous. I hope they sell well and Goulet can start selling them separately.
I'm a little scared of that Alchemy bottle. I assumed at first that the hole in the coaster would be deep enough for the bottle to sit flat and be really locked in, but doesn't look like it. A coaster is kind of a neat idea in case you have accidental drips going down the side of the bottle. Edit to say I was nervous watching this because I placed an order yesterday and was hoping there wouldn't be anything I couldn't live without.
Um, let me get it stright: so the Monoc nib is a meticulously designed and manufactured titanium 400$ nib that not only lacks any particular performance, but also doesn't have the signature flex of the titanium nibs, right?
Apparently so. But then, we often buy $200-300 gold nibs that don’t offer better performance than a well-tuned steel nib. And not everyone cares that much about flex, it seems. I think one would pay a premium for a Monoc nib for the same reason one would pay a premium for a particularly pretty nib or for precious resin: The desire for something well-crafted, distinctive, and in limited supply is endemic in the collecting world, not least in pen collecting. Great writers can be had for a hundred dollars; when we spend more, it’s not just about the writing experience or the cost of materials.
@@jamespicht1128 I totally agree. I'm just trying to make a decision about the purchase for myself. So far Monoc project for me looks similar to DrillLog, which I've passed eventually.

Sounds like you've never written with a properly adjusted steel nib, then.
@@NikeaTiber It's an experience I'll just allow myself to live without :)
The endless alchemist ink seem quite wasteful in term of packaging. The cork, two caps, I am not sold on the principle unfortunately.
Drew, you're such a bad influence, spending all my money 💸
Drew has motivated me from getting Kaweco Piston now. Ordered.
Your last line there is pretty accurate, I think! - Drew
friction fit Kaweco clips are useless, they should adopt this cap on all models.
Drew! You need to try watching your videos in 2x speed 😂🤣😂🤣
Y'all enjoy your kaweko piston sports.😢
hey guys Alchemy inks came up with 4 new colours with shimmer . cud you be so kind to cover em.
4:35...that's a ridiculous unfunctional button bottomed bottled....yeesh ..what were they thinking , when producing this shape ? 😂 🤣
Can't take the bottle anywhere with out that cork coaster ??!!
I'll take a pass on that60ml \ $32.oo product. thank you very much.

It definitely helps, but it's not locked in. - Drew
I would not call the bock ti nibs flex or even semi-flex, and they are probably the most common titanium nib on the market.
@@NikeaTiber Though they are softer than steel nibs and the majority of conventional gold nibs.
@@jamespicht1128 I totally agree. I'm just trying to make a decision about the purchase for myself. So far Monoc project for me looks similar to DrillLog, which I've passed eventually.
Hey, which watch is that?
A Kaweco for the same price as a Pilot e95s with a gold nib? I’ll take the Pilot.
Drew has been saying “you’re You” for years now… all of a sudden I’m “Tim”?? What is this? 😜
I cant justify $160 + $ and not get a gold nib. Beautiful pen, love the piston, price is stupid.
$300-$400 for a steel nib?
Yup - that's becoming more common these days. - Drew
@Gouletpens Which is sad and greedy. It's a beautiful pen, but not worth that price with steel.
The monoc nib - seems a bit of a pointless, overengineered product. For the price one can get a Sailor KOP with a simply superb gold nib. Just sayin'
The Deep Sea looks more like a nebula
Great profile image. That was when William is in the suit, right? - Drew
@@Gouletpens yep, made this profile like 7 years back,(see the username) loved reading the comics in high-school, still haven't gotten around to watching the show somehow, I really need to at some point
those diplomats are pretty but way too skinny for my grip.
I'm attracted to the slimness but put off by the price. Sometimes you can't please ANYONE!
At 16:07 someone sneezes.
and?
@@ichirofakename and there is an economic crisis in the world.
Brian and Drew have mentioned Brian's loud sneezes. It must have been him. 😁
why calling it "forever" when there are so few pages? I prefer notebooks with at least 150 pages to justify the expense. for $7.00 you can get a very fountain pen friendly nb with 240 at a certain soulless retailer we all love to hate....
Choking down his words as he says “316 dollars” for a steel nib pen. 🤦♂️
weebles wobble but they don't fall down. We HOPE! that's a TERRIBLE bottle design. No thank you!
