Hwachae is meant to be a simple, refreshing summer treat (thus the ice cubes to help keep it cool when eaten outside or in unairconditioned places). It's traditionally made in the shell of the watermelon you scooped out, so there's extra watermelon flavor. The fruits are all seasonal summer fruits, so the scooped watermelon, grapes, peaches (canned peaches and their juice are great too). The ratios of the liquids are really up to the maker, I've never seen anyone measure the amounts, they just pour it in and taste lol But using a milky Korean soda called Calpis or Calpico makes a huge difference, it's got kind of a yogurty tang to it that just gives it a lil something extra. I'd love to see you try it during the summer months!
I think hwachae might be better in the context that it's hot and like 200% humidity in Korea in the summer, which is primarily when that's eaten, from what I've seen online. So it's meant to be a cooling, light thing when you're suffering from heat lol
I made it and loved it!! She did try milkisin a previous video and didn't like it which is a similar vibe to mixing milk with a carbonated drink, so I think that's why she didn't like it as much/didn't understand the concept :) Also the ice is definitely cuz of how hot and humid it gets in Korea.
The only problem with making bacon pancakes rather than bacon *and* pancakes is the fact that you have to make the bacon first, and actually prevent yourself from eating it all before it turns into pancakes, as opposed to just making them at the same time, having them timed so they're ready to be eaten together. I have no self-control when it comes to bacon 😅
The cheeto caramel thing reminds me of cheddar and caramel popcorn, which is a thing that is sold on grocery stores, so that made me think they would be good.
Actually, if I’m going to buy them, I’m not gonna buy them from the store, I’m gonna buy them directly from Chicago own Garrett’s. anyone, from Chicago will know.😂
I was thinking it was supposed to be more like Karmelkorn’s Twister Corn, caramel corn with the cheese put directly on it. It was actually originated by Jack’s Corn Crib in the 80s. That was a chain of gourmet popcorn shops owned by Jack Klugman, the actor, who was a popcorn fanatic. While Chicago Mix is okay, in order to get the cheese to caramel ratio right, you have to eat two kernels of cheese corn to one caramel. I like it better with the cheese straight on the caramel corn. And yes, it has to come from a good popcorn/candy shop. Mine here in Minneapolis/St. Paul is Candyland. They make their caramel corn fresh every day. They make really good candy too.

Does anyone else wonder if they do it on purpose to add humor and drama? I have seen pretty much every internet "chef" make that "mistake" many times - most of the time at least once or twice per video. Unfortunately with the internet a lot of the things that you think make people real, relatable or adorable are planned out just to get your attention, subscription/view/money etc - be mindful of the bullshit and you will add to the solution instead of the problem. I am not saying that I don't find it entertaining and watching the videos but it's a scary world when everyone sees the "successful" people's bullshit which they are using to manipulate you and take it at face value and as the truth.

I wonder if the Cheetos would have been better with the caramel poured over top instead of cooking the caramel with the Cheetos... like instead of fully coated Cheetos you get somewhat coated - I like the concept because it is just like Chicago mix but I think there is too much caramel to cheese so either a pour over to minimize the caramel on each cheeto or only doing half and leaving the rest plain.

Make the caramel things with Popcorn Twists! It’s mind blowing. You’d think they would disintegrate, but they maintain their structure and they are so good! The recipe is right on most bags at this time of year.
The tortilla with a hotdog is called a donkey tail. We used to have those in Nebraska when I was a kid we would fill them with cheese and have liquid cheese on the side and dunk them. also, it does better if you bake them and you skewers to hold them in place, then putting it on an oven in a pan.
The first one. Just bake your bacon, when it is almost done pour on the pancake mix. And bake it like a normal pancake. Saves time and it is just as yummie. Finish with some stroop and you are done!
Love the taquito-dog idea, but I LOOOOOVE crescent dogs. ❤ these recipes all look amazing. You should try candied bugles. I know bugles makes one like that now, they're fantastic. But I would love to try it home made with regular bugles.
idk how I read bugles as "bungles" THREE TIMES, but it took me until thinking I should look up what a "bungle" is to read it correctly, even though you never once spelled it wrong 😂 Candied bugles sound lovely!
I always make hotdogs rolled in uncooked bacon and then rolled in puff pastry. Sometimes I put curry saus (think this might be Dutch saus) in it as well. My mom used to make this when it was my birthday as a birthday treat for my class.
I’ve made a version of hotdog burrito years ago because I ran out of buns and didn’t have any crescent rolls dough (I do those with a slice of cheese). I usually spread something like ranch, mayo or ketchup on the tortilla to help “glue” it together, along with a good sprinkle of fiesta-blend cheese. The sauce also helps the cheese stay in place as I roll them with warmed-up Bar-S cheese dogs or smoked sausage. I didn’t do an egg wash but made sure to place it with edge down, trying to get the cheese to melt and seal it. The pan was lightly oiled and I toasted mainly 4 sides. Frying it more might have been okay but I like lightly browned flour tortillas. Still a bit dry so I used my favorite peach-pineapple salsa either as a dip or poured on it and eaten with a fork and knife like an enchilada.
The Cheetoh thing sounds like a way to recreate Karmelkorn’s Twister Corn. That’s their caramel corn tossed with the cheese they put on their cheese corn. Not cheese corn tossed with caramel corn (made separately), the cheese put straight on the caramel corn. Sadly, Karmelkorn closed all of their locations. But the combination was actually done first by a chain called Jack’s Corn Crib. It turns out that the late actor Jack Klugman (“The Odd Couple”, “Quincy M.E.”, etc.) was a huge popcorn lover. And he liked experimenting with popcorn flavors. One of them was Caramel Cheese Corn. We had a Jack’s in downtown Minneapolis when I was in college. One of the schools where I did a teaching practicum was south of downtown (campus was nearby). So my practicum days had me at the school in the morning, going back downtown and eating lunch there, then going back to campus or home. They offered tasting and I had to try that Caramel Cheese Corn. I’d get a bag at least once a week. I was sad when they closed too.
Korean food? You would LOVE Hotteok!! This Korean pancake/streetfood is super delicious. You can do sweet or savory! Make from scratch... The box mixes have filling packets and they have peanuts inside :( but I know you and Chris would be up for the challenge!!!
@@Acminy I need to try the cheese ones!!! We have limited availability here for Korean food/ingredients, but I'm making it work with the power of TH-cam and other Korean Adoptees! However, we just had a new bingsu place open up nearby. Absolutely delicious! And also something Schelle and Chris need to try :)
The cresent roll hot dog is a thing here in denmark (might be a slightly different dough) it´s calles pølsehorn (sausage horn). When we do it we put a line of concentrated toamto purre under the sausage, and we also do some with a backon wrapped stick of cheese instead of the sausage. And we sometimes have pankages for dinner, we do a pankake batter without sugar and add grated cheese to it, then once it´s in the pan we add raw backon bits and champignon slices on top.
The caramel recipe with the popcorn twists (they’re in a bright blue bag) is delicious! Such a good salty/sweet combo. The caramel recipe with the popcorn twists actually is on the back of the bag 😊
@@frankie5713 yeah, I didn’t realize they are just in Canada but guess they are. They look cheetahs but they’re white and taste like popcorn. On their own they’re not that great but making them into caramel corn is great.
Also has you ever tried or heard of a French toast melt? Do you make your French toast toast as normal(no cinnamon or extra spices just vanilla). And then you put cooked bacon and cheddar cheese melted! 🤤 You can serve with butter and syrup if you desire. I personally really liked it was ranch dressing.
We make caramel covered corn puffs from Aldi. They are great! We make our caramel in the microwave. Then we put the puffs and the caramel into a paper grocery bag and microwave it in 3 bouts. Sooo yummy!
Tip Rachel, a toothpick through the tortilla wrap will keep it from unrolling. You can do that for any type of pastry ect. And instead of rolling in egg wash you should baste it.
OMG, we had the tortilla wrapped cheese dogs minutes before I watched this video. We have been making them for years but we put them in a baking dish with no egg wash but covered in chili and cheese.
in my country (The Netherlands) we have a lot of "filled" savory pancakes as well as sweet ones. i usually make ham ones or ham and cheese ones by just slightly frying the meat of choice in the pan, then pouring some pancake batter over it, and then flip and cook like you would with a normal pancake. for sweet ones people here like apple slices and then putting cinnamon sugar on top. its really nice, you can do it with whatever your heart desires haha
I enjoy cold brewed ice tea, usually takes 24 hrs to get a nice flavour, not sure sprite would taste good though. Thanks for trying all the stuff for us 😊
Bacon pancakes are my dad favorites (I do the bacon in the pan shopped, and than put battern over it) , mine favorit is more with apple circles 😁 So what do you do with the cut offs? I don't like recepies where have to waste food. Wet the torillas a bit and roll them in by foulding in the sides...
My mom used to make the tortilla hot dogs when I was little- but she put homemade chili on top and called them chili pooches! (Chili dog vs Chili pooch, she thought she was hilarious!) And to solve the problem of keeping the tortilla on she just put a toothpick through it. You need to try it! It’s one of those simple, weird little recipes that she thought up and every time I eat them, it tastes like home and I miss her ♥️
Hey rachel I just want to say thank you for making these videos, I've been watching these videos while I eat and it really boosts my appetite (which is something I desperately need) and your way of making and trying new recipes really motivates me to try something myself as well! I know you most likely wont see this but watching your videos have been an important part of my day
We make the hotdog rolls like that but we put hot sauce in them on top of the cheese. Commodity cheese was always bomb in them as this was made as a faithful after school snack! 😂 Ruffles would be a good match for those Carmel, as they are so good with chocolate.
We make the "hotdogs" but use corn tortillas, add cheese, and the hotdog, add a toothpick, and fry it. My family and I call them chihuahua dogs. My hubs is crazy and adds hotdog chili on top lol.
We ran out of hot dog buns once but had flour tortillas. Simply smeared tortilla with whichever mustard you wanted, placed uncooked hotdogs on it, rolled up, wrapped in paper towel and microwaved 1 minute-ish. Haven't purchased buns since.
I grew up with occasionally doing bacon in waffles- when we had waffles for dinner and long before the chicken waffle craze 😂 My mom chopped the bacon and spread it over the waffle before closing the waffle maker
For the hotdogs in the tortilla... It's called pig in a blanket cause the wrapping is wrapped around hotdogs like a blanket.. and im use to using biscuits or pastry roll to wrap then and then bake them.. must cook hotdogs before wrapping

Still a bit dry so I used my favorite peach-pineapple salsa either as a dip or poured on it and eaten with a fork and knife like an enchilada.
Thank you so much for this video 🥰
Hotteok is incredible! I especially love the savoury cheese variety. I make it at home and freeze them so I can have hotteok whenever I want
And we sometimes have pankages for dinner, we do a pankake batter without sugar and add grated cheese to it, then once it´s in the pan we add raw backon bits and champignon slices on top.
my nana makes chocolate dipped puffy cheetos for Christmas every year and they’re sooooo good
The caramel recipe with the popcorn twists (they’re in a bright blue bag) is delicious! Such a good salty/sweet combo. The caramel recipe with the popcorn twists actually is on the back of the bag 😊
What is a popcorn twist? Is this a Canadian thing like all dressed chips I am missing out on?
@@frankie5713 yeah, I didn’t realize they are just in Canada but guess they are. They look cheetahs but they’re white and taste like popcorn. On their own they’re not that great but making them into caramel corn is great.
We usually use a carbonated drink called milkis for Hwachae, which I think makes it taste better🤷🏻♀️
We crumble the bacon in our pancake and waffle batter to get bacon in every bite. Super yum!
Flaming hot cheetos with the caramel may be good. A little bit of a sweet heat flavor.
The video was great but Chris' office of the keys shirt stole the show! We love seeing his different shirts.
There used to be a diner in Guelph that did a dish called saddlebag pancakes with bacon AND sausage inside the pancakes! It was the best.
I Crumble up my 🥓 and put it in the batter, and it tastes AMAZING!!
I have a question for editing Rachel, what eyeshadow are you wearing during your editing?? Soooo pretty!! 😍
My mom always put the mustard inside the crescent roll when she made those. I prefer that over the idea of a hotdog in a tortilla. :)
We make caramel covered corn puffs from Aldi. They are great! We make our caramel in the microwave. Then we put the puffs and the caramel into a paper grocery bag and microwave it in 3 bouts. Sooo yummy!
caramel popcorn twists are delicious!
Tip Rachel, a toothpick through the tortilla wrap will keep it from unrolling. You can do that for any type of pastry ect. And instead of rolling in egg wash you should baste it.
Candied Bacon, if you do there caramel with bacon it is AMAZING, especially if you add a little pepper. So good!
Thanks for trying all the stuff for us 😊
I use that exact caramel recipe but on Old Dutch Popcorn Twists!
Have you tried carmelizing Puff Corn. It is sweet salty deliciousness.
15:50 Baby Thats A Struggle Meal 🤣
Bacon pancakes are my dad favorites (I do the bacon in the pan shopped, and than put battern over it) , mine favorit is more with apple circles 😁
So what do you do with the cut offs? I don't like recepies where have to waste food. Wet the torillas a bit and roll them in by foulding in the sides...
We have a popcorn store here (Ohio) that sells cheese popcorn mixed with caramel corn. So, I think the Cheetos would work well!
I've seen this popcorn sold in grocery stores, they call it Chicago Mix... totally what I thought of with this
Putting peanut butter on the pancakes before the syrup would be game changing
Try the Cheetos thing with either Fritos or Bugles ! It would sweet and salty !
Yeah,, my first thought was Fritos Dippers, Thicker than regular Fritos, so sturdier. To really go out on a limb, Chili Cheese Fritos.
Adding Schweppers Cream Soda and milk together is a really good combination as well. :)
Hey Rachel can you leave a link for your coffee mug I want one that size can't find anywhere !! Love from Ireland X 💗
I have been making baconcakes for about 15 years. I use bacon bits and toss them on when I pour the batter in.
It’s one of those simple, weird little recipes that she thought up and every time I eat them, it tastes like home and I miss her ♥️
So many lol moments you're the best
Hey rachel I just want to say thank you for making these videos, I've been watching these videos while I eat and it really boosts my appetite (which is something I desperately need) and your way of making and trying new recipes really motivates me to try something myself as well! I know you most likely wont see this but watching your videos have been an important part of my day
The caramelized Cheetos reminds me of the caramel and cheddar popcorn and I love that so I’m going to try it
Amen Christopher with the bacon! 🎉 Lol. That's me too. 😂
Candied flamin hot Cheetos I think would be the ticket…. Kind of like chili honey with a crunch!
I love caramel puff corn!
I made the bacon pancakes the other day for my family and they loved it!
I grew up with occasionally doing bacon in waffles- when we had waffles for dinner and long before the chicken waffle craze 😂
My mom chopped the bacon and spread it over the waffle before closing the waffle maker
For the hotdogs in the tortilla... It's called pig in a blanket cause the wrapping is wrapped around hotdogs like a blanket.. and im use to using biscuits or pastry roll to wrap then and then bake them.. must cook hotdogs before wrapping
