    What I love about Æthelred the Unready is that his name wasnt given to him because he "wasnt ready", his name is actually a pun.
    In old English, æthelred ment "well advised" so as a joke, people started calling him Æthelred the unred, or (loosely translated) Æthelred the poorly advised. Over time, the Unred part of his name turned into Unready and the word unred became disused and obsolete.
    So even back in the 10th century, the people of, what is now, England loved a good pun

    • @Svvithred
      @Svvithred 4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      It would have been something like 'unræde', which roughly meant 'of poor counsel', and unræde does almost sound like unready in today's version of the English language.
      It's just something that got slightly lost in translation over the millennia.

    Fun fact: The last English King of England was Edgar Ætheling, born in Hungary in 1052, the son of Edward the Exile, who fled to Hungary along with his brother Edmund escaping from the Viking conqueror of England, Cnut the Great's reign. They stayed in the court of Saint Stephan of Hungary, but after assassins sent by Cnut showed up in Hungary to kill them, they fled to the Kievan Rus. In the court of Yaroslav the Wise in Kiev, where they encountered the exiled pagan princes of Hungary, Endre and Levente. After a pagan uprising in Hungary, Endre was made King of Hungary by the pagans in exchange for religious protection, which he gave them. During his reign Edward and Edmunt moved back to Hungary where Edgar Ætheling was born. After Harold Godwinson was excommunicated by the Pope and killed in battle during William the Bastard's invasion of England, Prince Edgar moved back to England and in London was elected King of England by the Witan Council, but never officially crowned, and he shortly resisted William's advances until the Normans overran England. Edgar was also accompanied by the bastard son of King Endre of Hungary named George,. After the Norman Victory, Edgar and George fled to Scotland together. Edgaw would have many more adventures and George would establish the still living Clan Drummond.

    It may be surprising for a French but I sometimes think it would have been better if King Henry II d'Anjou succeded in unifying England and France in one kingdom to last. This way many wars, deaths, destruction would have been avoided and maybe the whole Europe would have been even more prosperous.

    The last Anglo-Saxon King Harald II Godwenson, was killed at the Battle of Hastings, in October 1066.
    His daughter Gytha of Wessex fled to Denmark, and later married Vladimir Monomakh, Prince of Smolensk from the Rurik dynasty.
    Their first son, Mstislav (in the Western chronicles, his name is Harald), is a common ancestor for Eduard III and his wife, Philippa of Hainault . Through this marriage, the blood of the Godwensons returned home and is an integral part of all subsequent English and British ruling dynasties.
    Such perturbations happen in history.

    • @kristophershepard2563
      @kristophershepard2563 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Another such perturbation where Britain is concerned: Edgar the Ætheling, designated successor of Harold II and briefly regarded as King of England in opposition to William the Conqueror, died in exile sometime after 1125. His sister, Margaret of Wessex, had by that time married King Malcolm III of Scotland, and while her daughter Matilda became the first wife of King Henry I and thus ancestor of the Plantagenets, three of her sons, Edgar, Alexander and David, all became Kings of Scotland in their turn, King David I being the ancestor of all further Scottish sovereigns (as well as the Bourbon Kings of France, but that’s another story). There would be marriages between the two bloodlines over the centuries, the definitive union occurring with the marriage of King James IV of Scotland to Margaret Tudor- daughter of King Henry VII- and finally realising the reunion when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English Throne as King James I. Every English/British sovereign since then has been an (almost) undisputed heir of the House of Wessex (I say “almost” because I must perforce take into account the Jacobite line- the marriage of King Charles I to Princess Henriette Marie of France was yet another union between branches of Margaret of Wessex’s bloodline, and while George I and his heirs were not drawn from this stock, James II/VII- and by extension, James the Old Pretender and Bonnie Prince Charlie, both of whom led insurrections against the Hanoverians- was. Though Charlie’s younger brother, Henry Benedict Stuart, Cardinal-Duke of York, was the last of the direct Stuart line and the last of this line to publicly acknowledge his claim to the throne- and even then, he did nothing to advance it- all further Jacobite heirs from Carlo Emanuele IV of Sardinia to the current heir, Franz Herzog von Bayern, are still descendants of Charles I via his daughter, Henrietta Maria Stuart, Duchess of Orleans, and thus beneficiaries of this Stuart/Bourbon bloodline).
