  • Welcome to a video I have been meaning to make for a while. Many of you have been waiting for a while and here it is. I thought I'd start with something a bit more simple, a Second World War British fighter so just a bunch of roundels, fin flash and code letters. I will do more in the series dealing with more complicated schemes. I hope you enjoy it and learn something, if you have a comments, requests or feedback add a comment.

Jamie, brilliant video - thanks very much, Clear explanation of the process and very much appreciated. Look forward to future ones. My very limited learning of the software has been through stumbling about so it's great to see how you've gone about it. One thing I did stumble on that might help with letters and lining things up is to drag horizontal and vertical grid lines onto the drawing. Point the mouse on the rulers that appear on the left and top of the page - hold down left on the mouse and drag out onto the page and you will see a grid line appear in blue - you can then move it around to help line things up - for example to make sure the node points on the letter H are lined up horizontally and vertically. Cheers and thanks again.

The design part was very clear Jamie. I just couldn't get my head around the masking/painting order you described for the roundels, so I look forward to seeing you use the masks on the kit.

Crab is a Royal Navy term used to describe members of the RAF, comes from the wartime Crabfat Jelly, an anti VD insecticide used to "delouse" sailors after a run ashore, it's identical in colour to the RAF uniform.

Did a follow along - only difference is I have a PC and there is the usual nuances that that involves, the silhouette design studio is a bit faffy but I got through decals and then scanned a set of US stuff in and created my own set of Tail codes.
    Hours of fun!🙂

Great job Jamie, but you will hate me for what write next: there is easier and cheaper (free) way to do it. Basically you don't need any separate software (like Affinity Designer) to create your own masks. Especially something so simple like RAF roundels.

Hi Jamie, thanks so much for taking your time out to do this video. I've been waiting for this video eagerly given my limited experience with Affinity Designer 2 but you've made it so much easier to understand than looking at a guide book and trying to figure it out. I'm already looking forward to future videos on the subject. Can I just ask, in terms of RAF 8 inch serials, how small can the Camel S3 cut and be useable? I have read about 5mm but interested to know what your own experience is? Thanks again. Rob

Inspiring video. I have started playing with Silhouette back in December. Like you said cutting roundels is easy, although I had trouble getting the smallest circle to be round in 1/72. Your cutting settings and using kabuki tape instead of vinyl have (almost) solved that. The tracing feature you showed helped me to make some odd shaped masks for the Australian Spitfire mk.VIII I am working on. One thing I am wondering and I might have missed in the video: Any specific reason that you use Affinity Designer 2 rather than Silhouette Studio Designer Edition?
In return for your help something that might be of your interest: I found Marc Lane's blog with a whole set of aircraft fonts. You can download the font file and once added to your font library you should be able to type any letter you want without having to trace them.
