  • Happy Vlogmas Day 11! Today, I am undertaking the tedious process of cutting out my Mccalls 7974 out of a crepe back satin. It was a labor of love, that's for sure!

The fabric for your dress is beautiful! The fifth Muslin fits very well. It’s well worth the extra fittings to get the fit just right. Cutting does take up some time especially with 14 pattern pieces. I love the labels finished just in time. Perfect!!!

Thank you! So glad to be done with the cutting! Now it’s on to the fun part!

Nice job! You’re doing such a service for newer sewists by keeping it real and letting them know how long it can take to do some of these steps. I keep thinking that someday, when you have your own sewing room, you will look back on these videos and wonder how you had been so adaptable! Keep up the great work!

My own sewing room…one can dream! 😍 It’ll be the equivalent of walking uphill in the snow to school both ways…all my sewing students will roll their eyes! 😂 “Back in my day, you had to cut 14 pattern pieces out of crepe back satin in 30 inches of kitchen counter space, with cat food cans as pattern weights!” 😂

I’ve enjoyed the labels being revealed day by day. You have so many cute ones to use.
Bodice looks good. It’s been educational for me.

This dress is going to be so pretty when it’s done! Great idea to clip the selvage of your fabric to keep in place. That is a very tiny space to cut on. I used to have a cardboard mat that laid on the floor and cut on for decades. Before rotary cutters that is. How far things have come! Love your pattern weights😂 I use stone coasters or tile left over from my kitchen 😂

Thanks, Donna! If I had leftover tile from my kitchen for pattern weights and I still cut in my kitchen that would be kinda cool. You know, in a gotta match your sewing supplies to your house kind of way! 😂

Wow, I have never thought to use the tracing paper to mark the fabric. I trace the pattern on tissue and then cut. If I use the largest size, I just cut the pattern. I love learning new ways to trace and use multiple size patterns. Thank you! I have enjoyed your vlogmas after Christmas. There were so many good ones to watch! You are so delightful to watch. I also got a new server and sewing machine. I am still scared to jump in and use the serger. I've had it a while, I will use my scraps and practice soon!

Thank you so much! I am so happy you enjoyed My Vlogmas and appreciate you taking the time to comment! Don’t be scared of your serger, it will change your sewing game! I can’t believe how much it changed mine, even though I feel like I am still learning it! It makes knits so easy! Good luck, happy sewing and happy new year! ✨

The bodice fit of the muslin looks great! I learned something new from you today. Instead of creating traced patterns I can just mark directly on the fabric?? What a brilliant idea!!!

Yeah! I use Saral tracing paper! I usually do a mix of traced patterns and using tracing paper. Depends on what I’m working with.

Congratulations on your cutting! Having new cutter blade is such a treat 😁. That’s a lot of pieces to cut… I think Shaun from kittenish behavior has sewn this dress, may be you can pick a suggestion or two on the pattern from her. Marking the pattern with the tracing paper looks so professional, and I am sure it pays off when sewing. Can’t wait to see your progress! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for watching! Yes, she has! I watched one of her videos about the dress and used her tutorial to raise the neckline, but she has a few more I need to check out! It seems she’s made the dress many times, very impressive!

I'm so glad you shared how long the cutting out took! I've always felt like I'm doing something wrong because it takes me hours just cutting out the pattern. Glad it's not just me!

I’m sorry to disappoint you but your cat is not watching you cut, she’s keeping an eye on her tins of catfood. Your last muslim looks great. With the weight of the skirt and that slightly thicker and more flowy fabric it will be a beautiful dress.
