Legit, one of my favorite games ever. I'll never forget seeing it in the arcades, and then playing it on my 360. This and Soul Calibur 2 are games I'll hold dear to me forever.
Arcade games were always ahead of their console ports in every aspect and when i saw Soulcalibur i could not believe my eyes but it was there and it was beautiful.
I got this game with my Dreamcast when it came out. At the time the graphics were completely mind blowing, like HOW CAN GRAPHICS EVER GET BETTER THAN THIS?!?!??!?! Good times. Also Hwang was my favorite character I'm sad that he disappeared in later entries. :(
I started with SC2, and I just loved Assassin, so much. So when I finally played this(almost religiously with my friends), when I picked Hwang... Everything just felt right.
Graphics still better than Soul Calibur VI imo. I'm really not happy with SCVI graphics... like it's missing lighting. Seems dark and muted somehow - kinda like SC 2 in a way. And Mitsurugi's design is gawd awful. 2 was uglier, but at least he had an alternate costume. 1, 3, 4, and 5 all had decent designs for him. Yoshi looks great though. Kinda of mixed bag to me. Ralphael is wackadoodle. The stages though, ugh, and the stupid blurring effect bothers me so much.
I want to imagine that the good ending of Libra has you fight either Azwel or Inferno and Shine On will blast in the background. Just a flight of fancy, but it'd be awesome.
One of my favorite fighting games of all time. Dreamcast will always be remembered and this game especially so, for being so ahead of its time its even scary now. The series never really recovered after the highs this game took it to
I agree..its a shame that lot of people only mention SC2 fondly nowadays because of the fact that the dreamcast was not as popular as the other machines and died early(in addition to this game being out years earlier than the real 6th gen consoles) but that's also the beauty of how things turned out. SC1 was a circumstance that will never be repeated
SC2 was good but it never really improved on SC1 in anyway, the original cast still had their same movesets even(if I recall correctly). can't wait for 6 this week looks to bring the franchise back to life hopefully it does well(in terms of sales).
The XBox 360 exclusive port of SC1 is BC on Xbox One, if you have not tried SC1 and own an XBox One, go to the XBL store, buy this masterpiece and support it!
I remember grinding like a fiend to unlock everything on this, and not getting tired of it. I also remember being extremely impressed by the announcer's ACCURATE pronunciations: "Cervantes (trilled 'r', accent on 'van')!" "Mitsurugi (subtle 'n' sound before the last syllable)!"
Good lordt this game still holds up to this day 2023. The music and graphics are insane. Makes me regret selling this and my Dreamcast a few months ago to get a PS5 😭
if you play this game on Dreamcast with a VGA cable, it basically looks like an above average PS2 game with excellent art details. Very impressive considering this game out years before PS2 even launched. Its the same with Dead or Alive 2. Dreamcast gave tons of fighting games a great lease on life. The 360 port is only 4:3, but at forced widescreen via HDMI it almost looks HD quality. The assets hold up very well even today. I'd love a proper remastering effort on current gen at super high resolutions with restored modes
That's what I loved about the Dreamcast. The graphics were crisp and clear. I could never get into the PS2 graphics because things always looked muddy in comparison.
@MrInuhanyou123 VGA of course will give you higher resolution (640x480) but it actually shows how limited the Dreamcast was compared to PS2, XBOX and GameCube. The polygon count is way lower than anything on PS2 just look at Mitsurugi's arm in this video as well as character faces, and the backgrounds in general are very simplistic in terms of geometry (same for DOA2), the 2D backdrops are very low res and the lightsourcing is very basic (like most DC games) The texture compression format of the Dreamcast is also noticeably more noisy than that of the PS2 (and even the PS1) Dreamcast was great in 98 but a year after it was almost obsolete. The PowerVR 2 was very limited and still relied too much on the CPU for basic operations like transform and lighting.
This is where I got my start on the Soul series and I didn't even know of its existence until my brother brought it in one Summer evenin'. We barely had any Dreamcast games at the time and we only had rentals, so any new game was welcome to me. For me though, I was hooked ever since. The gameplay, the graphics and especially the lore. Before I even gravitated towards Nightmare and Siegfried, Kilik was my main.. And then I saw Inferno
Soul Calibur had a certain feel of epicness that the following games seemed to lack. That grandiose feeling really added to the ambiance, like a period of history steeped in greatness. SC2 has my favourite character in Raphael but SC1 always feels the better game.
Man I remember i was really young and my dad let my play soul caliber 3 against him, i always used spawn now 6 is coming out and he’s super hyped for it, super awesome time right now
Buddy if this is going to continue i suggest to use the original announcer's voice in your "welcome back to the stage of history" intro. Much better imho and i believe many fans agree.
Borrowed a bunch of Dreamcast games from an older kid in the neighborhood. I remember the smell of the cigarettes on the disc box and game manual for this game lol
SCII is definitely the best, but I can't think why exactly. I suppose it had the best graphics, gameplay, elaborate stages, modes, multiplatform ease of access, music etc before the series took a downward slope. It is as if the developers didn't know what to do with the series after they made the best sequel to the magnum opus of SC1. SC2 is The Empire Strikes back of Fighting Video Game sequels.
BrandonVoiceRequests fun fact Soul Blade was actually called Soul Edge, it’s just that Edge Games sues Namco over the use of the word Edge in the game’s name which caused it to be renamed for its console rerelease.

xxnike629xx even if they couldn’t do 4&5 (despite my love of those two) id still gladly take an HD collection of Soul Edge-SoulCalibur III.

That would definitely be amazing but not sure if 4 & 5 would be included though.

the fact that somepeople only know this game because of the halfhearted 360 port(only 4:3, no online, modes missing ect) is sad. :/
I did eventually play the Dreamcast version when I got older and wiser. I'm just telling my history with the game :)
:) very understandable
Man me and the family still play this game. One of a small few franchises that i can get my parents to play.
Still the best launch game to a system in my opinion.
Halo's great but its aged like milk some places. This, however, is the finest of wines.

I swear to GOD the Dreamcast is the unsung hero of consoles.
In my mind, the Dreamcast port of Soul Calibur was THE definition of "arcade-perfect port".
Best part was the Dreamcast ver actually looked better than the arcade ver, it was amzing
Actually it was beyond arcade perfect, there's a Digital Foundry video on SC1 if you're interested.

Soul Caliubur is the most under appreciated fighting game series.
I freakin’ love it
Well is popular enough. Not as popular as Tekken but is well known.
It’s so old but still so beautiful. Aged so well. I wish more games had an imprint like this one.
