Very interesting idea Stuart. My lathe has gib locks, which I don't like. Looking forward to seeing the outcome of your design. Cheers Nobby.

Sir! Please remove your circus music from your auditors ears!!!
I am a new subscriber and I am in for the content and your voice/narrative.
Also could you raise the volume of your microphone as it is too low!
    Thank you.

Very good - thanks for that info - that is solid and useful and I'll make appropriate changes. Very much appreciate the comment.

I was having trouble with my mic set up - I think I have that fixed for the future. I also think I'll just ditch music entirely - it gets in the way.

@@StuartsShedInstructional or informative YT videos never require music at all. If anything it looses views since tastes in whatever music is used depend on the individual viewers likes and dislikes. And it's even over used to no real purpose on television programs. Edit the long boring parts out and put the effort into clear voice overs for the reasons you chose to use the design and methods you did.
Larger depths of cut won't kill end mills as long as the feed rate is correct. An end mill has to take a definite chip and not dust. Cutting edge rubbing causes high rates of frictional heat and accelerated wear. In fact close to maximum metal removal rates if the mill itself can handle them will prolong cutting tool life verses the cubic inches of metal removed in it's usable lifespan. But vibrations with carbide and / or chip re-cutting with any end mill most definitely dulls cutting tools. Pockets need to be constantly cleared as the chips are formed with either high pressure flood coolant, compressed air, or your shop vac. And recommended rpm's for HSS or carbide in places like Machinery's Handbook assume very rigid industrial level machine tools along with the industry standard flood coolant. At most I might start at 80% of the maximums listed and rarely increase it. Those rpm calculations are a trade off in industry. It's all about the amount of metal removed in the shortest amount of time verses the cutting tool life and tool or resharpening expense. Dropping the rpm a bit also isn't linear, a 20% reduction in rpm doesn't increase tool life by only 20%. It's much much higher than that unless you try running far too slow. So it's mostly trade offs.

Thank you - very much appreciated. Based on the feedback here I have gone through the follow up video to this one and edited out all music, and increased voice volume. It will be published in a couple of days - I do hope you will take a look at it. All the best!
