Interesting, EMD stopped using those kind of forged caps over 40 years ago.In the field repairs are are done with the block upright. In 2 cases I was involved with the bearings were spun due to lubrication failure so some of the bore were oversized and off to one side. The first part of the repair is to weld the bore undersized then install a new cap that is undersized also. To get every thing lined up they stretch a piece of music wire through the bore then measure down from the top of the head pot to get it centered then bore it out to standard diameter. The final test is to install the new bearings and crankshaft and then if everything is correct you should be able to spin it by hand. This job takes about a week to get the engine back in service.
