Drink a protein shake or eat a chicken breast every time Sal says “studies show” and you will hit your protein intake for 2022 in one episode!
All jokes aside, great episode and always helps to remember going back to these overlooked basics always help and are a breath of fresh air.

Speaking of "can't blame the corporations", one of the branches of research in food-processing is about finding the sweet spot that would create the most crave-able, non-satiating food that simultaneously would not be off-puttingly sweet. There is a name for that phenomenon, but can't remember it now. Anyway, it's an example of how the corporations are creating demand for unhealthy food by influencing the consumers with their food, not the other way forward, with people wanting their food to induce as many cravings and give as many calories as possible. It's up to everyone to have their opinion who is to blame or whether blaming should a way forward at all. I just want to let people know about such practices. I'd say that I can't see an economic system hostile to health on many levels and simultaneously say "you know, I can only blame myself, they are innocent here". Maybe there is a place where I can take responsibility for what I do and also notice how processed food is researched and delivered to create a context where my decisions are influenced before I even consciously think.

MAPS Powerlift!!!!!! I would love to dedicate the next couple of weeks to the MAPS Powerlift program. Im currently in my 8th month of resistance training and i would classify myself as skinny-fat. My goal is to gain more muscle before going on a calorie deficit. I think MAPS Powerlift would really benefit me a lot especially because it would be introducing a new adaptation for my body to get a new muscle growth signal. I am currently doing a push/pull/legs routine, but i am in the final 2 weeks before my program is over. I never win things like this, it would be a great way for me to start the new year and continue on my journey to a stronger, healthier lifestyle 💪🏼 🏋️

Started my fitness journey almost a year ago. During my journey I found this podcast and it has helped me soooo much! I listen to it weekly and have gone back and listen d to the episodes before. I have added to my friends as well! I have lost 90lbs since march of 2021. I started at 260 and now I’m at 170. Built healthy habits that will last forever. So even if I don’t win. I wish we could leave our desks for 10 minutes at a time 3 times a day. Working from home now my steps are a lot less frequent so I take short 2-3 minutes to jog in place every hour and go to the bathroom upstairs away from my office along with my breaks. I do evening chores right after eating since we don’t really go on walks so my movement post dinner keeps me up and moving instead of just staying on the couch. I had to get creative but I’ve found a lot of neat ways to get my activity up. Great episode as always guys!

It's so easy to forget that simple stuff goes a long way. As someone who really enjoys training in a 5x5 / powerlifting routine sometimes, it's hard to break things you like or are used to so it's super refreshing to hear people talk about it and reiterate the simple things that do work! Now I just need to get my girlfriend on this band wagon.

I’m currently 18 years old, 6’3, 212lbs and have a fairly good physique. I have been seeing a lot of progress in my physique since I’ve done more bodybuilding style of training but want to get more into powerlifting because my bench press max(285lbs) has become more than my squat max(260lbs) and my deadlift is stuck at 385lbs. The powerlifting program would be an insane benefit to aid in my training because I know that if I gain strength then more muscle will come as a result of getting stronger.

I totally agree with the whole unprocessed foods strategy. Even as someone who prefers calorie tracking with an app, if I want to cut, most of that is done, practically, through replacing what I was eating with whole, unprocessed food. When I do this, I don't really end up eating less food volume, and I don't notice an increase in hunger with this strategy.

I've seen first hand how daily activity can be a determining factor in gaining or losing weight.
Recently took a week off work, and still did my weekly strength and cardio training. Noticed the difference in the scale and mirror.
My job keeps me pretty active. Nothing strenuous, but I'm moving most of the day. I get double of my daily steps just there.
Also, I eat mostly whole food at work because I prep my lunch. I can only eat during specific times. And drink more water when I'm at work.
Thanks for the show! This is my most favorite one yet. Even though sounds basic, powerful stuff 🧠💪

The other thing about drinking water is that it physically fills your stomach. I'm drinking so much water this weekend and I feel like I had a Thanksgiving style meal. My belly actually feels stuffed (probably the intestines not belly but you know....) I try to drink 90 ounces a day of water (3 times of the water bottle which is either 33 or 28 ounces). I haven't been hitting it lately, so I drank way extra this weekend. Besides water, I drink kombucha, Sparkling Ice drinks, tea, and I've just gotten into Stevia pops.
RE calorie burn from activity. I burn the most, by far, when I'm running around doing errands for myself and others all day. After that, is nannying on days where the kids and I walk around instead of going to the park. I am actually more active than the kids at the park, too. It's funny that the mom sends us there for the kids to be active. If their friends aren't there (ie cold or rainy weather or high heat in the summer) they just sit around and sulk.

I understand that the daily habits matter, and I am not saying the 6 things are hard. Since you need to be in somewhat of a surplus of calories to put on muscle, and a deficit to lose fat, I am asking if there is an "optimal" way to try to do both at the same time. I know body recomposition is a thing but some seem to think this is hard to achieve by many.
