I am almost 67 and retired from healthcare where I worked for most of my adult life. I spent my last 20 years nursing in adult male mental health, and the last two years in children’s services. I have loved being around people in all that time, but now I’m loving the peace and quiet of retirement. The fact that I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to fills me with joy. After so many years of people pleasing and putting other’s needs before my own, it took some time getting used to not doing it, but I’m there now and it feels great. I see friends when I want to, but I love being on my own. I keep myself active with walking my dog, eat healthy with the occasional treat, and make crafts to sell at craft fairs. Getting older needn’t be as dreadful as listed in this vlog, it depends on what you want for yourself. I know I’m not spending what’s left of my life feeling afraid of getting older because there’s no point, it comes to everyone in the end.
So so true. I'm always amazed when ppl are shocked that they got older. What were they expecting? I've learned that if u won't, can't slow done & see what's around u ur body will make u. It's sad society makes it a disease, esp for women. I tried one day to add up the time spent on maintaining my youthful self ....all that beautiful prescious as gold time i wasted on that when i could have been creating a more deeper life, all the great food in life i missed cause i was always dieting. All that does is make u look exactly like u thought u wouldn't, a scrawny old woman trying to look young.
I'm 59, I'm finding it harder to do housework, so I take 10 minute breaks, after say hoovering. Sometimes I can't be bothered doing the dishes til the next morning. Even getting a shower is harder, just the motivation to do it. I still take my dog a walk daily, it's good to get outside.
Good gravy, I’m 76 and I still just keep going. Not like I did when I was 50 or 60 but I’m not dead yet. I have 2 metal hips, one knee glued and metal and screws, and many screws and a metal plate in my pelvis, bad accident.
Seems to me this is poorly titled. These "Unpleasant things Seniors do..." are normal aging. The title is like 'the blame game'. How about retitling it Normal aging and tools to manage ?? The piece is well done, just the title is off.
All those so called aging outcomes are the result of our own government lying to us, saying red meat causes cancer, use seed and vegetable oils instead of natural fats. Just eat a red meat heavy diet, skip the grains and starchy vegetables and sugar.
I really wondered whether I had some dirty habits when I saw the title of this! It turns out that it simply enumerates all the normal things that become more difficult for everyone as they get older! It seems a bit like a guilt trip for people who are not murdering themselves with exercise every day. I think that plenty of sleep, healthy eating (as a rule to be broken occasionally), doing the things you love and following interests which fascinate you, all goes a long way in improving the quality of your life. Avoiding pressure and stress is way out there in front, I think! And getting out in the sun and fresh air when possible, and spending time in nature. Also, a lot of people don’t make it to old age, so gratitude is important too. It is not a competition to make it to 110, so take time to be with your thoughts, and try to develop an interest in spirituality.
Since I've turned 70 I tire easily and hate crowds and crowded places..I do Pilates twice a week walk for an hour everyday I miss the socialising part of work..I feel quite fit and am not on medication yet. Not into sex anymore it's become painful. It's a bitch getting old...
Here's my take: If interacting with people causes me stress, the answer is to stop interacting. Simple. I get peace. I don't get lonely at all, so why bother? Apparently, most people do get lonely so I'll just be satisfied to be grateful that I am quite happy to be by myself in retirement. It's that need for people that causes so much stress for most people that I don't understand how evolution selected for it. I get to be free in my old age with much peace. I also have prosopagnosia (face blindness) so I can never recognize faces anyway unless I see them every day and sometimes not even then.
@@katella Yes, born that way. There have been several noted artists whose paintings depict people without faces; they have prosopagnosia. I'm no artist, but I can draw the human form pretty well, all except the face. I never knew about this until late in life so I had challenges I had no help with, but I managed to cope. I also have a fairly strong photographic memory. At age 66 I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism.
@virginiamoss7045 thanks for explaining. That must have caused you to have to develop all kinds of coping strategies. I'm have only recently noticed that I can't see anyone's face clearly until they get quite close and am trying to deal with that. I'm 71 and was told last week that I have cataracts so there's the is answer to my situation.
@@katella Glad you have a solution. It's not that I can't see the face; there's no brain to interpret what I see. However, I can read faces fairly well along with body language even better. I'm just missing a part of my brain or probably taken over by photographic memory.
That’s a wonderful approach! A warm greeting creates a positive connection. If you often forget names, consider using phrases like “It’s so great to see you!” or repeating a general acknowledgment. To help remember names, try jotting down names in a small notebook after meeting someone or associating their name with a memorable detail about them.
Me too. I think it's silly to worry about names. The person you meet certainly knows their name and doesn't need for you to remind them, ha! By the way, most people of all ages have trouble remembering names.
The most important thing is don't just sit. If you don't use it, you really will lose it. My mother is 87 and does a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. Everyone ages differently, but eventually we all slow down. My grandfather really slowed down when he hit 101. I'm 65 and have bad arthritis so I probably won't last as long as my mother and grandfather.
I'm 65 go to the gym 6 days a week, when I get home from the gym I take my rescue dog for his walk, then my 2nd breakfast and after that take another 20min walk with a 12 lb weighted vest ,just eat right and try for 8 to10.000 steps a day , and you'll be fine if you're able go to a shelter and adopt a dog they will keep you going.
I’m a female in my mid seventies. There was a time when I went to the gym to maintain stamina and core strength. Then the gym started allowing men to use the ladies’ restroom and dressing room, locker area. Strange times we are living in.
At 61, my nose runs more than before, and I set alarms to remember things that need to be done. I eat about half the food I used to, so no weight gain.
What a depressing video, I’m 78 and loving life. I’m in a choir and a Samba Drumming Group, both great for meeting people and having a good laugh. I don’t go to bed until about 1am and sleep well until 8-30am, I don’t get tired or fall asleep during the day. We’re all different so just live your life without worrying about getting older. 😊
I don't think it's depressing ... it shows many people their symptoms are normal, they're not alone, and often there ARE things they can do to improve their situation. Nice to control what we can and hand the rest over to God. Good for you for staying active and challenged in healthy ways; that's his point. I don't worry about it; I want to deal with it proactively to stay not young but strong and satisfied at any age.
I'm 64 still working as a nurse 3 and a half days a week, thinking about droppjng a shift in the next year or two. On my days off i get in the car and drive a couple of hours taking photos all the way . I edit a lot of photos and chrochet alot when im at home . C atch up with my kids for coffee and hang out with them when they're free. My partner is a musician and works part time so hes busy, but we have our own time together as well. I do forget name sometimes names and ive noticed more aches and pains creeping in but thats easily ignored. I just keep pushing 😊
As for keeping the mind active, work until at least 70. I don't do puzzles or or learn music or language, but I worked until 71. Then it became mentally challenging to just meet my aging needs and care for my aging house. Just using the internet to learn what to do with mold in my crawlspace or any of all the things involved with caring for a house by yourself is super challenging, especially finding good people to do things for me (the latter near impossible). Technology is also a super challenging thing to deal with. There is no end of demands on the brain in today's world to keep the noggin going.
And u learned new things in ur pursuits. Right? That's my key to getting older...learning. with an occasional pc of cheese cake thrown in that i didn't have to make.
Some of us who have worked around many in our life are loving being alone when older ...peaceful .. keep in contact with others via phone and computers and rarely leave home .. deliveries of all needs and a less public life totally not missed at all ...leave my inner door open when up and closed for the night ..shows others you are ok ..do not need to be checked on or a light in a window on and off to show neighbors you are alright ...but keep your privacy...
I need to use a stroller due to very poor balance. I will just mention that I have ocassionally had a person take hold of the handlebar while walking. So I had to request she move off the stroller. I am 73, spent 20 years as a live-in carer on short contracts nationwide. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 3 years ago which meant retirement. I have always had to put my clients first but it is now about looking after my own needs. I exercise daily, eat healthily and am re-learning guitar to keep my mind active. But my health challenges are tough as I can feel very unwell on some days, and getting up daily is a challenge. I need to spent my days on my own, other people cause me stress basically, apart from one good friend who respects my privacy. I am trying to relocate to a coastal area I love but am worried about the physical aspect of undertaking a move and if I'm strong enough. I guess I will find out if it happens, as I've had several property disappointments and been let down. I know the sea air will help greatly, so fingers crossed.
I don't like to ask for help but sometimes I do. Most times everyone is just to busy to give me a little help so I try and do it myself. Some times I can do the tusk myself sometimes I fail, but at least I give it a go.
Terrible Title for this video! You are promoting the negativity promoted with aging in USA! I am healthy 75 yr old retired nurse. People of all ages forget people or their names, forget appointments, etc! People are living healthier much longer with medical advancements made since computerization plus the internet making health information available. There are numerous healthful information free from your county Dept of Aging which is part of Real Services. Aging does not mean there will be any dementia, helplessness, etc. Diet is very important as eating fast foods, processed foods, foods with added sugars of any type, preservative chemicals, unheathy fats, etc will definitely affect your energy levels and health. Majority of all ages do not eat enough vegetables daily. Many do not eat enough healthy protein daily due to chewing/teeth issues or digestion problems with aging as digestive enzymes decline with age. Eat healthy fats like olive oil daily. No white flour or white sugar products. Make libraries your friend and learn healthy foods from books and videos. Carbohydrates (sugars like high fructose corn syrup, white flour, etc and snack foods, cookies, doughnuts, soft breads, etc- all made with saturated fats) cause weight gain. Libraries also loan out exercise videos like Tai Chi which is great slow movements for everyone. There are Geriatrician doctors who specialize in elder health issues - all issues. Many patients do not tell their doctor what health issue they are noticing or having - including incontinence. There are many treatments for every issue. Do not just accept a symptom as part of aging. It could be from a vitamin or mineral deficiency, a UTI, a poor diet, an allergy, etc. Everyone of all ages need help at times - do not act guilty if you need help. Most people feel great being able to help another person. If weather is bad or you cannot get out - use video calling, chats, facetime, etc on tablets, computers or phones to keep in touch with family, friends and neighbors you know. If you do not know how to use a computer or smart phone - ask a younger person you know. Most will be happy to teach you. Plus there are free classes at libraries, schools, elder centers, online classes, etc for learning the internet, etc.
There are embarrassing and disgusting things old people do. I went out for dinner with my church group and enjoyed chit chat. After dinner we walked outside and no sooner had l exited the venue when l let off a sneaky one. In the group we walked together and quickly arrived at our vehicles, where everyone stood chatting before departure. Unfortunately the area was small and l was unable to get away from the group, and l became aware of my gassy smell. A lady in the group pointed to the beautiful scenery nearby and l turned to look at it, but quickly turned back in time to catch her pointing to me and in effect mouthing that l was the smelly culprit. That problem only happened to me in old age. Taking charcoal doesn’t help. I was so embarrassed and the lady who pointed me out as the culprit has treated me as an ill mannered dirty person since that incident. Fortunately, l don’t do it often, but l never used to do it at all!
I've heard about our bad diets contributing to the problem. The added sugar, preservatives and unpronounceable ingredients mess us up. I wonder about that at times.
A healthy lifestyle, not staying up late and going to bed early, eating healthily and having a good mental life are the best medicine, no matter how old we are.
I have such a hard time asking for help. I feel obligated & with a husband with visual issues & diagnosed with Alzheimer’s I know I will need more help down the road.
You need to get help or your health will decline. My dad had a stroke. He was 75, my mum 73. Dr told my mum if she didn't get help that she would go before my dad! He had carers in. My dad passed but mum lived until she was 92. She had angina in her 60's and high blood pressure constantly along with liquid morphine. Im sure she used it as an occasional tipple😂
When I started taking care of my Dad, I joined a support group that met once a week. I wasent prepared of all the changes Dad went through that happened so quickly. Thank goodness his Dr's suggestion.
M.C.T. Oil ( Medium Chain Triglyceride Oil ) from the health food store supplies an alternative fuel to the brain when it can no longer process it's usual supply . Three tablespoons daily is suggested by a female pediatrician in a TedTalk whose husband was affected by dementia . Improvement took two to three weeks . Ordinary coconut fat from the grocery store does the same thing less expensively though it's fattening .
It's simply chatting about an aspect of life. Nothing wrong with discussing it. Just like discussing your childhood, school days, travels, hobbies, work, pregnancies, parenthood etc etc etc etc. Normal to talk about things.😊
@intignia Increased gas can be a natural part of aging due to slower digestion or dietary changes. Here are some tips: Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Avoid foods that commonly cause gas, like beans, cabbage, or carbonated drinks. Consider using digestive aids like ginger tea or over-the-counter remedies. For fruits and veggies, steaming them can make them easier to digest while still retaining nutrients.
I would appreciate some suggestions about dealing with electronics. I am 64 and can manage my smart phone and laptop very well. I am noticing that my older relatives begin to struggle with their phones and electronic or online banking, ordering, etc. Our services are not necessarily adapted to their needs. I guess feeling increasingly confused can be part of aging. What advice or tips are there, other than asking for help?
Technology can be daunting for some, but there are ways to ease the learning process: Suggest user-friendly apps and devices designed with seniors in mind (e.g., phones with larger buttons and simplified interfaces). Encourage patience and practice-repetition builds confidence. For online banking, use apps with strong security features and set up a password manager to simplify login details.
Confusion can happen, but staying mentally active and organized can help: Engage in brain-stimulating activities like puzzles, reading, or learning something new. Maintain a daily routine to reduce overwhelm. Use tools like calendars, reminders, and checklists to stay on track. Stay physically active-exercise improves cognitive function. If confusion persists, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.
Why does everything have to be a problem. If you are tired rest if you are hungry eat just do what you can why push to walk x amount and or be social etc etc...i find peace just doing what comes naturally and have no interest in trying to stay alive for however many years. If i die so be it wth hell do these people go on and on about...😮
Too bad the dietary recommendations are way off. We need more fat , salt and protein especially as we age. Best way to ward off fatigue and boost mental clarity.
Look, can't remember something..? Let's face it we' ve got a lot more things in our brain to remember than 50 years ago! I'd stay away from the Dr. for as long as you can, you'll come away with a whole pile of pills! Take your own blood pressure, look into supplements. Make friends with younger people, young people have energy, they exude it, too many oldies are like sponges....they suck out your life blood...but that isn't necessarily connected with their age, probably always like it. Anyway important thing is to stay away from that type, and those who only talk about illness. If they would only talk intelligently...like 'I've just read a paper from Harvard about....' or 'Just seen a researcher from Mayo on TV talking about progress...' Do they heck! Avoid these folk, they age you fast. You need more than a Tylonol after being with them.

At least I know I’m “normal” for 70.
Change to a carnivore diet, try to get more exercise and fresh air and stop thinking about yourself so much.
I didn't start to feel the pinch until I hit 71. I'm now 73 and learned that as long as you stop to smell the roses, you'll be ok.♥
Bless you 🌟
Seems to me this is poorly titled. These "Unpleasant things Seniors do..." are normal aging. The title is like 'the blame game'. How about retitling it Normal aging and tools to manage ?? The piece is well done, just the title is off.
I REALLY agree that this EXCELLENT piece needs REtitling! Easy peasy, right ⁉️
The title is click bait to get your attention. Should be retitled.
Yes l agree! 😣
Well said. Agree with everything you say!👏 And learn some emojis! 😕
Quite a wonderful commentary on the aging process 🎉 TY for taking the time 🙏
Totally agree, think the title could've been a LOT better!!
Since I've turned 70 I tire easily and hate crowds and crowded places..I do Pilates twice a week walk for an hour everyday I miss the socialising part of work..I feel quite fit and am not on medication yet. Not into sex anymore it's become painful. It's a bitch getting old...
I also tend to stay away from “peopally” places.
Have you always not been able to recognize faces?
@@virginiamoss7045 that is facinating.
Give a very warm, welcoming 'hello, nice to see you again' lets them know I remember them. I don't tell them I can't remember their name.
Exactly what l do ❤
You sound exhausting, my goodness. 😊
You're 65 things will change.
I’m a female in my mid seventies. There was a time when I went to the gym to maintain stamina and core strength. Then the gym started allowing men to use the ladies’ restroom and dressing room, locker area. Strange times we are living in.
Yeah right.
At 61, my nose runs more than before, and I set alarms to remember things that need to be done. I eat about half the food I used to, so no weight gain.
My nose does too
What a depressing video, I’m 78 and loving life.
Every age has its own beauty and unique experience.
A very important and helpful video, thank you! I have experienced everything by my 72 and I'm trying to cope with these challenges.
It put me right off balance. I noticed a woman in the video doing this and holding the user's arm.

I am 67 and this past year have had to care for elderly parents after a lifetime of nursing others. I am so tired, and wish I could finally live my life for me, but it’s not in the cards for me. I haven’t had a vacation, or even a nap, since I was a child.
I nursed as an Rn for 42 years. I am almost 69 years old. My dream retirement with my husband was crushed as he caught covid and passed away May 2024. @Nonsensically too true! I have also been forgetful and away with the fairies!
I always forgot peoples names since I was a kid. Now, I only remember the names of people I find interesting.

Can't remember? Just carry on the conversation. Tired, sit down, and relax. Eating meat with fat gives you energy without increasing your weight.

I'm 62 and working on my capstone class for my masters. Believe me, that'll make your brain work.
Excellent video!
A great video. It addressed many issues not often talked about like having to ask for help more often.
Keep dreaming
Her loss. She's the one with the problem.
And this woman is in a church group? Such hypocrisy, sounds like she's the problem.
News flash! We all have that issue somewhat now, and that "Lady" that pointed you out is a #@&😀.
I've heard about our bad diets contributing to the problem. The added sugar, preservatives and unpronounceable ingredients mess us up.
I wonder about that at times.
Yes, they are awful. Many wonderful doctors on youtube help people to get off medications through healthy and natural diets.
A healthy lifestyle, not staying up late and going to bed early, eating healthily and having a good mental life are the best medicine, no matter how old we are.
Ridiculous headline. I was expecting a very different set of “unpleasant “ habits.
I have such a hard time asking for help. I feel obligated & with a husband with visual issues & diagnosed with Alzheimer’s I know I will need more help down the road.
How about having freakin' Macular Degeneration...so far in one eye, and having NO husband???
This is ageism. It is the last "ism' that people feel free to perpetuate. Everyone's an individual. Don't segregate by age.

Here are some tips:
Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
Avoid foods that commonly cause gas, like beans, cabbage, or carbonated drinks.
Consider using digestive aids like ginger tea or over-the-counter remedies.
For fruits and veggies, steaming them can make them easier to digest while still retaining nutrients.

I am noticing that my older relatives begin to struggle with their phones and electronic or online banking, ordering, etc. Our services are not necessarily adapted to their needs.
I guess feeling increasingly confused can be part of aging.
What advice or tips are there, other than asking for help?
Technology can be daunting for some, but there are ways to ease the learning process:
Suggest user-friendly apps and devices designed with seniors in mind (e.g., phones with larger buttons and simplified interfaces).
Encourage patience and practice-repetition builds confidence.
For online banking, use apps with strong security features and set up a password manager to simplify login details.
Confusion can happen, but staying mentally active and organized can help:
Engage in brain-stimulating activities like puzzles, reading, or learning something new.
Maintain a daily routine to reduce overwhelm.
Use tools like calendars, reminders, and checklists to stay on track.
Stay physically active-exercise improves cognitive function. If confusion persists, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional.

Age became reality 😊
I’m 74 and I bet I’m more flexible than some 30-year-olds! And I bet I walk faster than they do!
Depressing!!!
How do I deal with it when I can't remember someone's name when I'm introducing them? I say so, as in -- pause, blank look of obvious concentration - "what's your name?" And laugh at my own foolishness. That sounds very rude, but in fact, most people think it's funny. Perhaps because they can relate to my lapse. I'll be 80 next year.
Check the backside. I always noticed older women had a big gap between snirt and pants.
😂time for Tunics!
I like that new word snirt. So, I guess that's the snirt gap.😂
@leegruver4718 cant see to type!! (too old) and chilling my kidneys with the mysterious SHIRT gap issue
Sort of like your proclivity to notice older women. . .or perhaps it’s the gap between being an adult. . .and, an adult behaving like a fourth grader. . .grow up
So why doesn't big pharma research & develop solutions? After all, they managed to develop Viagra...just goes to show what our priorities are....looking ( not feeling) young as possible and the ability to have sex like a 20 yr old. What a soaring accomplishment.
I’m just had my 64 birthday, why on earth this depressing 💩came up I don’t know 😂. You can’t go back and if you could you wouldn’t appreciate it that much because you take youth for granted, so I say put up and shut up and make the most of who you are not defined my the age elite who think they will have youth for ever🙄
What a coincidence that all these different women in this video have the same name 😄
Yes sometimes I don’t remember names but I just say , I’m sorry what is your name again,I’m so terrible with names.
I think videos like this are crap and enough to make me give up on you tube entirely.
Agree it's a cheap shot.
SO WHAT. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.
stupid! know young people dementia. please write an article about that! so terrible stupid. like evry young people know evry face always. but oh they are so busy, that is the excuse.. Older people if something like not knowing a name is embarrasing. OMG. how to put people down!
Disgusting name of video and not sure why you popped up
First of all, I agree that this title is garbage. Sorry, but not sorry that my natural aging process is “unpleasant” for you. I thought that the unpleasant thing aging people do in this video were going to be have that old person smell, wear out of date baggy clothes, yell at children on your lawn etc. Also, why is the hypothetical person in this video a woman? It seems to me that men have these aging issues as well. Please go back and edit making six of the items on the list assigned to male names and the other six to female names. Yet again, women are being devalued for aging.
How many faces does Eleanor have?
Sorry, but the pace of this video is waaay too slow for me (too much AI fluff?). I'm old, not dead.
Total bullshit
