The song was written by Eric Clapton about his feelings for Patti Boyd who was married to his friend George Harrison at the time . It was inspired by the poem " The Story of Layla and Majnun " which portrayed the poet as a man driven to madness by his unattainable love . Clapton eventually married Patti Boyd in 1979 . He also wrote the song "Wonderful Tonight " about Patti too .

Rita Coolidge, who was dating studio drummer Jim Gordon, claims the two wrote a song called Time (don't let the world get in our way) and recorded a demo that they played for Clapton. Fast forward a year Clapton releases Layla. When Coolidge heard Layla for the first time she immediately recognized the coda part of the song and screamed "That's my music". She was infuriated. .... I heard that was not necessarily the real reason for the name but I always believed that it was but Duane was never in on many live shows with the band but only one in Tampa ,he was too busy with the Allman Bros ....Eric used Derek instead to hide his real name , Bobby Whitlock said Eric wanted the band to make it without his real name recognition ..It did not help the popularity of the band at all ..If he had used ERIC at least there would have been more recognition.. The bands life was too short.

    • @robertb1849

I thought that too but I was corrected. Derek and the dominoes was formed without Duane. He only contributed to some of the songs. Bell bottom blues for example doesn’t have Duane in it. Either does anyday. Can’t remember which others.

    • @VIDSTORAGE
      @VIDSTORAGE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@robertb1849 There is also a suggestion about the name as something to do with Delaney and Bonnie and it proves that the strange origin of the name and the band combined makes it the weirdest band to ever make it so big with such an extremely short career span that hardly could get any attention while they were on tour before and after Layla was released .. Why is it called Derek and Dominos?
As Clapton recalls, it was Ashton that suggested “Del and the Dominos,” having taken to calling the guitarist “Derek” or “Del” since the Delaney & Bonnie tour. However, according to Whitlock, “the Dynamics” was the name they chose and Ashton mispronounced it when introducing the band...

Derek and the Dominoes is Eric Clapton. He also has Duane Allman playing slide guitar. Eric is the singer. The bass player is Carl Radle the keyboard player and backup vocalist is Bobby Whitlock. The drummer is Jim Gordon. This was made shortly after Eric and the band met the Allman Bros., Eric and Duane hit it off and spent most of the next 3-4 days jamming eventually Duane joined the recording. Some say, including band members, the wealth oh the album or the album itself wouldn't have gotten made if not for Duane jumping in and getting things going and keeping it that way. Not that shenanigans weren't happening as there a 4-6 extra cds worth of jam sessions that came with the title disc. You just heard the Allman's on 'Whippin' Post' Duane was the player in your left ear.
The high soaring and unfortunately too soft slide guitar at the end was Duane Allman. He is recognized as the godfather of the electric slide guitar playing. He credits the harmonica players as helping him learn phrasing with the slide guitar. A huge loss with him dying at 24. He is missed everyday by some.
So all the slide guitar you hear was played by Duane Allman. I think that the second half was a direct result of having Duane as part of the band. This song was directed at George Harrison's wife Patty Boyd who Eric was madly in love with and was torn as George was his best friend. Eventually they did get together and eventually the friendship won out over the situation. The relationship with Patty lasted a couple of years,as Eric couldn't get his drug and alcohol under control. He and George resolved their differences long before Eric and Patty broke up. So I think the first part was Eric's desperation over Patty and the second half may have been his coming to grips with it and maybe somE peace over it, That's my .02 and that maybe overvalued.

Derek is Eric. The Dominoes played together and were tight even before Clapton joined them. The second half of the song was written by Rita Coolidge, who was dating the excellent drummer, Jim Gordon. He lifted it from her, Clapton heard it and wanted to put it on the end of the song, and Gordon traded him something for it; can’t remember what. Keyboardist and co-vocalist Bobby Whitlock didn’t think it fit and tried to talk Clapton out of it but couldn’t. He ended up playing a second piano part over Jim Gordon’s (who was a drummer after all, not a piano player) part to give it more life. They flew back from England weeks later to record that coda, and Duane came in sometime later to add his part.

Firmly on my list of "Greatest Albums of All Time"! Clapton released this album with no fanfare at all, and no mention of him being on the record. It didn't sell well at all, and the band actually played some small clubs/pubs pretty much in anonymity. Word eventually got out and this album has become a very big seller and remains such today. The piano "Coda" was actually added about 3 weeks after the album was wrapped. That's Jim Gordon, the drummer, playing piano. Whitlock also added a piano overdub. Duane's ethereal slide work really makes it for me! This is a double album, and much of it is straight blues, blues/rock. I highly recommend you listen to every single bit of it and keep it with you for the rest of your days! As far as reaction tunes, try "Little Wing" "Anyday" "Bell Bottom Blues" and "I Looked Away". Bobby Whitlock (keys, vocals, songwriter on this album) has a very interesting You Tube channel and speaks quite openly and candidly about his time on the Layla project, his days with Delaney and Bonnie, and his time with George Harrison, among other things. Great channel!

The 7 note intro to the song belongs to Duane Allman, who lifted it from Albert Kings, As the years go passing by". The 7 notes came from Kings opening verse, " There's nothing I can do". Also, the structure of the piano piece ending (Coda), was originally written by , Rita Cooledge.

All four members had previously played together in Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, during and after Clapton's brief tenure with Blind Faith. Dave Mason supplied additional lead guitar on early studio sessions and played at their first live gig. The death of Allman in a motorcycle accident in Macon GA at 24 was a terrible loss . Clapton called him, "The musical brother I never had" ... except briefly. Rolling Stone ranked him #2 (behind Jimi Hendrix) in its "100 best guitarists of all time" list.

I was (and am) a huge fan of Clapton’s early career, right up to and including this collaborative masterpiece. I mean just look at the lineup.
Not so many moments of rock god-hood for EC after this album but what a great piece of music to close a chapter with. All these years later it’s still in the “permanent” section of my playlist.

The slide guitar in this song is Duane Allman. Layla was written by Eric Clapton and drummer Jim Gordon. Jim Gordon may be the most influential rock drummer of all time. He played on just about every famous rock band's albums. He was also addicted to drugs and suffereed from severe schizophrenia. Eventually it caused Gordon to murder his mother, and he is now serving the rest of his life in Vacaville Prison.

There is a video of Tom Dowd, the producer, looking back on recording and mixing this. Playing back the original ,unmixed master tape. What impressed me was how many tracks of Duane Allman playing slide guitar parts, he had to work with. Sounded like at at least a dozen. Duane was one of those players who could jam endlessly, and never repeat himself. You should look for that video if you can. Quite interesting...

There are many versions of this song, but Duane Allman's guitar makes this one soar to the sky.
For the insanely dramatic changes within a one single song, I suggest progressive rock/metal song The Day That The World Breaks Down by Ayreon.

The guitar work is amazing but I just absolutely love the piano break and playout. Clapton was considered a guitar god but it was Duane Allman who stole the show here, just like it was actually Clapton who played the lead on George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
Harri, if you want to hear drastic changes of tone and tempo in an iconic song, react to Elton John's epic masterpiece Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - arguably my favourite song ever.

Jim Gordon the Drummer on this and many other great albums, suffered with mental health issues (schizophrenia I believe) and the heavy drugs consumed did not help his condition. He began "hearing voices" and in 1983 bludgeoned and stabbed his own mother to death, claiming voices told him to do it. He has been incarcerated since. This was the original version, with Duane Allman entering the sessions later at the bequest of Eric Clapton. He added the emotive slide guitar and closing bird-like sounds. Listed to "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad", the guitar interplay between Duane and Eric is amazing. Duane died shortly after recording these tunes in a motorcycle accident.

Besides things I have seen already written .. Yes Eric wrote this song because he had fallen in love with his best friend's (George Harrison) wife. From what I understand when George found out he backed out of his marriage to Patty and in fact Eric married Patti and later wrote a solo hit "Wonderful Tonight" about her also. As for Derek and the Dominos.. I love "Bell Bottom Blues" by them too!

It was 2 songs. Kind of. The first part was written fast & they felt it wasn't long enough. Bobby Whitlock (background vocal/keyboards) was playing around on the piano with the riff. The producer decided to add the end part building on that riff. This is my absolute favorite song ever! Crying guitars, voices filed with pain, then the beauty of the music of such talent. Jim Gordon (drums) also played with many other artists, including You're So Vain (studio) but killed his mother & is still in the hospital. Duane Allmann is the guy on Whipping Post whose guitar blew you away. And Carl Radle is a bass god. Then...Eric. Best guitarist ever.I've listened to this song more than any other. Thank you, Harri!

    Really???
It's time we introduce you to Yes, masters of progressive (so named because the musical themes "progress" through the pieces) rock, then Harri. My suggestion would be to start with the first track from The Yes Album, "Your's Is No Disgrace," and proceed chronologically track by track and album by album from there.

The Evolution of Dekek and the Dominos. Delaney Bramlett was a guitar player from Mississippi who move to L A and became a session player. Bonnie was a blue-eyed blonde who became the only non-black Ike-ette. (Ike made her wear an afro wig and darken her skin.) They met in L A and married then formed Delaney and Bonnie. They toured as the opening act of Blind Faith where they met Eric Clapton who was tired of the ego wars within Blind Faith. They then made the Delaney and Bonnie and Friends tour. The Friends consisted of all of the future members of Derek and the Dominos, what became the Rolling Stones horn section, Dave Mason from Traffic, and Rita Coolidge. Other would sit in when they could, including George Harrison, Duane Allman, and possibly Gregg Allman among others. Rumor has it that one night, possibly somewhere in New York, Delaney's "back up" guitarrists were Dave Mason, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Duane Allman. When D & B broke up George Harrison recruited Eric Clapton and 3 members of the band for All Things Must Pass. Eric, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon were rejoined by Bobby Whitlock of D&B to form Derek and the Dominos. Duane Allman sat in on Layla to play slide guitar. Later, after D&D broke up, Eric did his Unplugged album which included the slower acoustic version of Layla.

Clapton and Duane Allman met for the first time at an Allman Brothers concert in Miami that coincided with when they were in the studio recording this album. Tom Dowd made it happen after Clapton expressed an interest in going to see Duane (Skydog) Allman play. There's a TH-cam video except from the documentary 'The Language of Music' about Tom Dowd's career as a sound engineer, producer and inventor that tells the story of how they met. Dowd was responsible for many albums from this era including 'Layla' and The Allman Brother's "Live at the Fillmore East'.

The change that occurs in this, to me is due to his pleas, even with the guitars, in the first part. When it goes to piano, it sounds like he finally got the girl, but there were still themes from the first part carrying over. This Layla is actually Patti Boyd who was married to George Harrison, developed a relationship with Eric that she divorced Harrison for. Alas, her marriage to Eric was probably good at first, but it too ended. He and George remained friends. I think Eric's song "Wonderful Tonight" is another ode to his marriage to Patti.
Pattie also inspired George early on in their relationship to write the song "Something."

It was also DUANE ALLMAN playing under the name SKYDOG. He went to watch the ALLMANS. He met DUANE. And they went to the studio and LAYLA as it is today .

From what I understand, Clapton formed Derek and the dominoes after the break up of blind faith. He was jamming a lot with duane Allman and after recording the first part of Layla the weren’t satisfied without an ending so they got permission to use the piano ending and Duane and Eric enhanced the piano solo and history was made.

In her 2007 book Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me, Pattie Boyd wrote: "We met secretly at a flat in South Kensington. Eric Clapton had asked me to come because he wanted me to listen to a new number he had written 1970. He switched on the tape machine, turned up the volume and played me the most powerful, moving song I had ever heard. It was Layla, about a man who falls hopelessly in love with a woman who loves him but is unavailable. He played it to me two or three times, all the while watching my face intently for my reaction. My first thought was: 'Oh God, everyone's going to know this is about me." I was married to Eric's close friend, George Harrison, but Eric had been making his desire for me clear for months. I felt uncomfortable that he was pushing me in a direction in which I wasn't certain I wanted to go. But with the realization that I had inspired such passion and creativity, the song got the better of me. I could resist no longer." The band 1979-71: Eric Clapton Guitar,/vocals, Bobby Whitlock Organ, Carl Radle Bass, Jim Gordon Drums. Harrison, took to calling Clapton his ‘husband-in-law.’
