  • Happy Independence Day weekend! It's the perfect time to break out the grill and invite the family over for a gathering on the patio. But what can you do to keep your guests safe from mosquitoes? In this video, Ike and Amelia will be guiding you through some simple, natural ways you can reduce mosquito populations in your backyard.
Amelia will walk you through some of the best plants you can add to your patio landscape to ward off those biting pests. These include favorites like citronella, lemongrass, lavender and more. She'll show you how to pluck these aromatic plants, crush their tissues, and use them as an insect repellant!
Ike will encourage you to reduce mosquito numbers by planting for birds, dragonflies and other wildlife that feed on those pesky critters. To keep your birds and dragonflies hydrated, you'll want to have at least one water source in your garden. Preferably, your water feature should include a pump to keep water circulating and clean.
Finally, Dan will introduce you to the leafcutter bee--a small but mighty pollinator that makes its home out of half-circle leaf cuttings in hollow stems. They harvest their building material from large, soft leaves and flower petals. Like other bees, they feed on pollen and nectar. If you see little half-moons on the edges of your Redbud leaves, smile! You're supporting some special bees.
