  • Used on many early diesel locomotives and some steam engines the Leslie A200 was introduced in the very late 40s/early 50s. At first produced from bronze but later transitioning over to aluminum. This particular A200 has a Parsippany tag indicating this is a later model. The earlier Bronze and some aluminum A200s were produced in Lynhurst. This A200 is a 156 variant indicating it blows at 156hz. This is the most common of the A200s however there were other lengths that provided different Frequencies. This A200 was intended for rail use having a rubber faced diaphragm while some others are intended for marine use which use a diaphragm pack that consists of 3 different phosphorous bronze diaphragms. #a200 #leslie #railfans

    That horn reminds me of the train horns that were used on the old art deco locomotives from the late 1950s, and the early 1960s. I love the sound of a mono tone horn!

      The step up from this, the A300, which is louder and deeper, was definitely used on ships and freighters.

    Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I used to work for
    the TP&W here in the Midwest.
    I’m talking original TP&W! They
    had early geeps and RS2’s and
    an RS3 with these horns. They
    had some SW1500’s with a different style, probably the A125, the more shriller sounding one!

      I used to live next to the TP&W. I was born at the time when the railway inherited the Santa Fe GP20s, up until just before the Genesee and Wyoming took over.

    A200's were introduced in the mid 1930's. There are also A425's for ships, in addition to the A300's like you mentioned.

    • @TheHornKing

      Is it widely available or just special order?

    • @djstupido
      @djstupido ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rahmanaridho the 575 was available only in a steam version. They never made an A575. I don't believe it was special order because it shows up in a lot of Leslie catalogs in the 40's through the 60's.

    • @rahmanaridho
      @rahmanaridho ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djstupido but the new queen Mary 2 have the air version because they no longer using steam, but they rise the note from A1 to C# ish because of the IMO law minimum frequency of 70Hz.
      So the new horn play at 70Hz while the original 575 was 55Hz

      Yep I know lots were made out of Bakelite. Muha actually made me a few not too long ago. There were other types made out of other materials though. The E2s are stainless steel leaves bolted together kinda like a M horn has

      A200s are very simple internally. Shouldn’t be any issue opining it up and checking it. Just don’t cross thread the back cap when it’s screwed back on
