I was working security by the stage in Salem, VA, for the Cash/ Carter's/Statler's show back in the 60's when the Carter family came out. As they waited to go on stage, she smiled at me and said, "How are you tonight?". I was stunned, still not sure what my reply was. One of the high points of my 78 years. She was drop dead gorgeous and sang like an angel but absolutely down to earth. Never be another family like theirs.

she was the best female country singer of all time
    most people dont know that
its a shame, they will tell you about Patsy Kline and Loretta Lynne and Dolly
its no wonder, she didn't make a big deal out of herself, she really didn't preform much on her own, they never heard the angel, they had no way of knowing what the angel sounded like
but for those few who did hear it live, it was an unforgettable sound
she literally sounded like an angel

Sometimes musicians that could be very successful independently are instead part of a group. They often do things on their own, but secondarily. I put Duane Allman and CSN in that category. One reason is that they realize they can be more influential as part of the group rather than as a solo artist. Think about how influential the Carter Family is to country music and how risky it would have been to leave that to hope for something better. I suspect Mother Maybelle was the boss and who would disagree with her management decisions?

She didn't seem to crave the spotlight. She had a world class instrument, but not the drive to be a star. To some, that's not important.

Anita Carter had one of the most beautiful voices in country music. I think it's a shame that she wasn't promoted better. She had a great vocal range and her soprano was terrific. I've got a few of her duets with others and I wouldn't swap them for anything.

Those are the sort of uncalled for comments that make youtube unpleasant viewing. Carrie Underwood is a GREAT singer and trying to diminish her talent in no way helps Anita Carter because she was simply one of a kind and no help or comparisons are needed when discussing her incredible voice and talent. In terms of range and sheer purity of voice there are only a couple of other gals I'd say compare and all of them have the advantage of having recorded and released much more music than Miss Anita ever did.
