Well... I'm a Brazilian guy, locked down in the middle of pandemic, listening and emotional about this amazing song! Thank you for your existence! Best days are comming soon!
Jimmy McCarthy wrote one of the most beautiful songs of the last century. Mary sang it magnificently and together they created something so very special and endearing.
First time I ever heard this was at party on the park 2003, hovered by the corrs...i thort it was an original of theirs...its.such an absolutely beautiful song....puts the BIGGEST lump in my throat ever...
Mary Black played a gig in San Francisco in the early 90s. KKSF-FM, sponsored the show and I represented the venue providing the honor of spending time with Mary. What a down to earth lovely woman...and amazing singer.
a thank you to Jimmy McCarthy for writing such a beautiful melody and wonderful lyrics and then to Mary Black whose voice is so well suited. Love Mary very much. Honestly, I don't know why this wasn't a mega hit in the states but it's been a mega hit for me since it came out.
@@Anthony-nj6gt I am a big fan of the Corrs but I think you are flat wrong in your judgement of Mary's version. I have listened to all the Corrs' versions. They come off as rather shallow showcases of their talents. Vocally and instrumentally this version has it hands down. The spare arrangement, the sheer depth and humanity in Mary's mature vocal performance is musical magic. No slick showbiz superficiality here. Peace and out....
@iannicholson7205 - sorry, but I will 100% stick to my original analysis. The girls brought tears to my eyes, when I saw them sing it live. The highlight of the concert for me.
I saw her live on 08.02.1990 at Cork Opera House. A birthday present from my housemates. Thank you girls. And thank you Mary. Your voice touches heart & soul in an instant. Still does....Go raibh maith agat
Heard this on the radio years ago when I was so lost and lonely. I must have cried then as I do now. It gives calm and comfort. I’ve heard some other of Mary’s songs and I’m mesmerised, her voice is one with the music and like a warm blanket to get wrapped up in. Mary if you read this - thank you for sharing your gift. Know you have made a good difference for this stranger. ❤️
She was amazing in her day. And a true Irish legend. She helped so many go into music. She was so nice to young musicians. Loved by so many around the world. The song writer had to come out of hiding Jimmy mc carthy. Then once he was on tele the country demanded him to make an album himself. The hiding man had to become famous by demand.
This is an exceptionally beautiful song. Peace as poetry. Someone in the threads below says it is outclassed by the Corrs version. I responded "I am a big fan of the Corrs but I think you are flat wrong in your judgement of Mary's version. I have listened to all the Corrs' versions. I hadn't watched this in years and see now it has almost quarter of a million views. I edited this video. It was directed by the very brilliant Alan Gilsenan. At the time this was happening my mother was dying, so there is always that emotional connection for me. Beautiful song, and beautiful work by Alan.
Love her Music, I remember talking to Donal Lunny about her years ago, when I was recording him at a concert in North Wales over 20years ago, when she provided this song for his homely Irish Collection album’Bring it all back home’
I have seen dear Mary many , many times and each time I have talked with her a gotten pictures. She is kind, warm and talented. The BEST! I went on the Irish Cruise with Joanie Madden because of Mary and it was one GREAT week!
I first discovered MB singing backup for Van Morrison. Listened to her more often, thereafter. I'm amazed at how controlled and perfectly pitched her singing is. Her phrasing is impeccable, the accents in all the right places. Simply beautiful.
How on earth can anyone in their right mind vote this down? A song by one of Ireland's greatest song writers, sung by one of Irelands greatest ever singers and accompanied by one the most beautiful guitar players on the planet, what's there not to like? I can only think it must be a "political thing" due to the video....or something...that completley escapes me?????...what morons!
Can someone explain to me what this line means, please: „And your heart is Amelia dying to fly“ What is meant by Amelia? I’m not a native English speaker and I’ve been wondering about this line like forever….
This refers to Amelia Earheart one of the first females to fly an airplane. She disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world.

Overplayed song. Never liked it.
