The ending of Surf's Up, with A Day in the Life of a Tree, Til I Die, and Surf's Up, is maybe my favorite run in their whole discography. It's like descending into Brian's brain, laying there in that bed with him.

I can't believe I just found your channel! great stuff man, I love the decor and the vintage vibes. Great list, too - The Beach Boys Today! is such a fantastic album, plus, it contains a historical moment - Please Let Me Wonder, the first song written by Brian under psychedelic influence. It's so remarkable because up until that song, the album is slowly ramping up in harmony until it finally breaks free of the surfing sound in Please Let Me Wonder and a whole new landscape of slower and richer ballades is introduced.

Pet Sounds trivia: everyone places the stress on the first word and says PET Sounds, when in fact it is Pet SOUNDS. Pretty good list, I gotta say. Man, where is Holland? Holland is a pretty solid top five for me. Even though the best of, say, Surf's Up reaches more stratospheric heights, I would say there's really not a bad song on Holland. Dipping into the Beach Boys extended universe some, I would certainly give high marks to Dennis's Pacific Ocean Blue and Brian's That Lucky Old Sun. I can respect the decision to not include SMiLE. That said, if I had to choose one favorite body of musical work of all time, that honor would have to go to SMiLE. Wow, it's just sublimely inventive, yet still conveys classic beauty. For me, it doesn't get better than SMiLE.

  • @stevezodiac6025

I really enjoyed watching your video and hearing your review of Beach Boys albums. I have been a fan of theirs since 1966, and although I absolutely respect your views, I almost entirely disagree with your 'ratings'. I could be way off base, but I believe a part of the story is the difference between viewing the Beach Boys albums as artifacts versus contemporary releases. One big thing was your comments about Surf's Up which I also agree is close to their best of all time. You mentioned a dislike for Student Demonstration Time and a reference to imagining the late 1960s. I got this from my dad's record store right after it was released. I also listened to the late radio broadcast about Kent State shootings and how many people cheered them, and about the blacks going on a rampage in 1967 and 1968 and burning and shooting and breaking everything in site, and of flipping over cop cars in the park in the Midwest. Not to mention all the nonsense with the Tet lunar new year 1968. With this reference the song is completely relevant to both the times and the theme of the lp, especially when I consider the painting on the front cover and the state of the U.S. back then. I was into Manassas and Santana and Guess Who and Grand Funk back then. For example, American Woman and Share the Land may seem irrelevant now but were statements of their times. Don't forget Barry Sadler had a song that charted a few years earlier.
I got Sunflower when it was brand new and I don't think I have listened to it since maybe the 1980s. In my mind it is horrible. I too think Today is a marvelous transitional album that goes along perfectly with Summer Days as the end of an old world and beginning of a new, both for the lads and for 'our' consciousness.
I have often said that when I listen to music I have a reference to events in my life like the time I first heard it or from when it was released, and I know that music from before I was born is more difficult for me to have a connection with because I can't reference it to the time it came from. I still love the Boy's car music, probably most of all Surfer Girl as being the best overall performance, and then I think Surf's Up and Holland both being sort of temporal masterpieces and very insightful to the times they were released.
    Cheers

I like your list, but there are 2 albums I would not have included: Love You and Smiley Smile. I think I would've gone with All Summer Long and Holland, Party and Carl/Passion are runners up.

Glad that Love You made the cut, personally It's probably my 5th or 6th favourite. I do think that All Summer Long deserves a spot somewhere in the top 10 as well as potentially Holland but at what album's expense? Time to Get Alone off of 20/20 is quickly becoming one of my favourite Beach Boys song of all time. I would count Smile as an album and put it at no.1 also

2 years late, but here’s my top 10 (I put 11 since somebody might not consider Smile a real album…):
    1. Smile (The Smile Sessions)
    2. Pet Sounds
    3. Smiley Smile
    4. Surf’s Up
    5. Sunflower
    6. Today!
    7. Friends
    8. All Summer Long
    9. Surfer Girl
    10. Holland
    11. Wild Honey

Wish Surfer Girl was included in this top ten… I feel that it was the most definitive demonstration of their early sound with amazing harmonies and songwriting, although of course it has their early album filler present like the rest…

As an avid Beach boys fan, I love this vid! Awesome work! Here are a few points you might find interesting-
    1. Both Transcendental Meditation and Student Demonstration Time were Mike Love's ideas, that's no coincidence lol.
    2. The song 'Never Learn Not To Love' on the 20/20 album was originally written by Charles Manson except it was called 'Cease To Exist'. Dennis (Wilson) liked it and used it without crediting Charlie (Capitol made them change the title and alter the opening lyric from cease to exist to cease to resist, because they found it too dark) Crazy right?? And people think it was the Beatles that had more to do with Manson.
    3. Speaking of Dennis Wilson, he had an awesome solo album in 1977 called 'Pacific Ocean Blue' which in my opinion (including anything Brian has done) is the best BB's solo album. Worth it for the amazing opener 'River Song' alone!
    4. Lastly, check out The Flame's self titled album from 1970, It was produced by Carl Wilson and put out on the Beach Boys own Brother Records. Though it failed to chart I think it's an odd foot note in BB's history and great album none the less (very Beatle-esque/ Badfinger sounding). Also the lead singer/guitarist Blondie Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar from The Flame later Joined The Beach Boys and played on their 'So Tough' and 'Holland' albums as well as their epic in concert album from 1973.
Anyway, Thanks again for the Video! P.S. Sunflower is SUCH an underrated gem! Easily one of my faves, could call it their 'Abbey Road' frankly.

Great video, though I personally count the Smile Sessions (and Brian’s ‘04 Smile) as the Smile album and Smiley Smile is its own thing. Smiley Smile has a lot of musical hold overs but aesthetically and sonically it’s completely different than the Smile sessions.

    6. 20/20
    7. Wild Honey
    8. Holland
    9. All Summer Long
    10. The Beach Boys (1985)
I've read through a few dozen comments and haven't seen anyone mention my #10 yet. No love for the 1985 self-title? If not, I'll bet some of you are dismissing it without giving it a chance. "Where I Belong" might be my all-time favorite Beach Boys song which was not released as a single, plus "Getcha Back", "It's Gettin Late", other tracks are good too.

The problem I have with Beach Boys albums past 1966 is that through the years and albums they seem to reuse songs from the Smile sessions thereby the albums don't really sound like complete projects more just like compilations of songs. I like ' Surf's Up ' tho :)

Today! gets a bit lost because people see Pet Sounds as the moment they embraced albums as thematic wholes. Admittedly I myself worked forwards through their discography from Pet Sounds through to the 80s, before going backwards to the start. Today! Really isnt "half" an album - yes, the second side serves as a suite of songs connected thematically - which Rubber Soul then embraced full across two sides - but actually, it's clear that side 1 and side 2 were presented as a juxtaposition to showcase the transition of the band ON record as opposed to when bands drop a new album of radically different music without the fans knowing what happened in between. This makes it an arguably more interesting concept than Rubber Soul. Additionally, people talk a lot about Brian's perplexing decisions to include filler tracks on early albums - like Bull Session and Our Favourite Recording Sessions - but again, it seems Brian liked having the juxtaposition of complex music in a professional setting against amateurish studio chatter which presents them as real people, real kids who goof around like all their peers while simultaneously helping the audience relate to the members. Theyre like Easter eggs, and I believe the fans at the time enjoyed hearing them and seeing their characters come through

Hard to argue with your list. I might have swapped All Summer Long for Smiley Smile. Was the Party album eligible for this list?
You really nailed it about how those bad tracks really derail some of those albums. I've always thought Today! would have been as important and almost as influential as Pet Sounds had it not been for "Bull Session With Big Daddy." And considering what we know about Murry Wilson, "I'm Bugged at My Old Man" isn't really fun to listen to. In fact, it's pretty much unlistenable.
But, when it's all said and done, Pet Sounds still lives up to its legend.....and always will.

I think every Beach Boys album has at least one song that lets the concept of the album down. You're right with Transcendental Meditation ruining Friends but Sloop John B (while an okay song) completely juxtaposes the rest of Pet Sounds in terms of overall themes. Still one of the greatest albums and maybe the best of 1966 but repeated listens does not make a cohesive listen when you look at it objectively. I agree with your choices but I'd shift a few of them around. I love Pet Sounds but I usually lift the needle once Sloop John B starts, I blame Mike Love for its unwarranted inclusion on Brian's otherwise masterpiece
