The Beach Boys are one of the most praised and commercially successful bands of all time.
According to Chart Masters, they are the 32nd highest selling music acts of all time, selling more than 128 million albums worldwide. Holy dang. In total, they have released 29 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 56 compilation albums. They’ve had at least 80 hit songs. They’re also one of the most influential bands. A surprising number of bands wouldn’t probably wouldn’t exist today if not for The Beach Boys.
Brian Wilson, in particular, continues to be recognized as basically a musical genius- one of the most innovative and creative dudes in history.
The Beach Boys changed pop music forever, making it more youth-oriented and reaching broader audiences than ever before imagined. If you’ve ever heard a jingle in a commercial, you can thank The Beach Boys…or perhaps curse them…for that jingle being stuck in your head all day. ‘Cause you see, every song they made was basically as catchy as a jingle. They made harmonies cool. They made sweet melodies hip. Their songs continue to make tens of millions of people smile.

In 1968, when when drummer Bill Bruford was invited to join a new band that was forming called 'Yes', he was immediately impressed with the group's vocal harmony, saying "this is obviously a vocal group, just like The Beach Boys...". Clearly The Beach Boys style influences not just pop bands but also reached across pog rock groups as well.

  • @spiffyflinger9174
    @spiffyflinger9174 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Hey, nice video! I appreciate the research that was put into it. As a super mega Beach Boys fan however I’d like to engage in some pedantry.
    - The statement that the Beach Boys essentially formed in 1958 is a bit odd and inaccurate. Around that time Brian formed a little doo-wop high school band Carl & the Passions for one show (the one pictured around 0:42). I'm not even certain David Marks lived next door to the Wilsons in 1958, and he definitely wasn’t playing guitar with them considering he was only 9 at the time! The Beach Boys themselves wouldn't start until 1960/61, when both Mike and Al started pestering Brian about making music together.
    - Actually the other Beach Boys didn’t even want Dennis in the band, perceiving him as young and unruly with no apparent talent for music. It was actually the Wilsons’ mother Audree who persuaded them out of fear he’d feel excluded.
    - It’s true that Surfin’ Safari was demoed with Hite & Dorinda Morgan before they signed to Capitol. However the April 19, 1962 session you spoke of occurred after they were already on their roster. It was a Capitol-funded session produced by Nick Venet which resulted in the final
recording we all know and love.
    - The liner notes that you show at around 4:13 are from some weird modern reissue of Surfin’ Safari, of which there are loads (that album has been languishing in fuzzy public domain purgatory for about a decade now).
    - The pictures at 4:40 are additional pictures of the band recording their first album! They’re from September 6, 1962 specifically. You can see in the top right that the boys are pictured with Andrea Carlo who provided the female spoken vocals in the song County Fair.
    - I don’t believe that Dennis was partaking in drugs as early as 1963. The band would have been under the watchful eye of Murry at almost all times while on tour, which meant that even a sip of a beer would result in a penalty.
    - The timeline is a bit confusing so I don’t blame you for getting this wrong, but Al didn’t rejoin in 1964 with the express purpose of replacing David. In fact, the band existed as a six-piece with Al and David co-existing for a few months before the latter left. Al just saw how much moolah he was missing out on while at dentistry school and did everything in his power to rejoin basically.
    - It’s true that the Beach Boys released an EP on Capitol in the US in 1964… but it’s not the one pictured in the video. That sleeve belongs to a French EP which compiled random tracks from Shut Down, Vol. 2 and All Summer Long. The US one, Four by the Beach Boys, was also a compilation of previously released tracks, but a more thoughtful one, since the label wanted to push the tracks Wendy and Little Honda without oversaturating the singles market.
    - The 41-piece orchestra that were brought on to work on The Beach Boys’ Christmas Album was conducted by Dick Reynolds, not Brian. They also weren’t brought on to bring Brian and Mike’s songs to life, since they only played on their covers of Christmas standards.
    - Help Me Ronda was not a single off of the Beach Boys Today! Four singles off one album would have been ludicrous in 1965! The hit version that went #1 was Help Me Rhonda (notice the H), the re-recorded, truncated version off the band’s next album.
    - Don’t forget Caroline, No was a single off Pet Sounds as well (released as a Brian Wilson solo single strangely)!
    - You claim Smiley Smile was notable for Brian stepping back to let Mike and Carl take the songwriting reins. This is totally wrong! As you correctly said earlier the majority of Smiley Smile was just re-recorded versions of Smile tracks, meaning Brian not only wrote all the music on the album, he helmed the entire production of it in his home! Carl on the other hand wrote absolutely nothing on the record. Brian would continue to be the driving force behind their records all the way until the 20/20 sessions in 1968. Even the follow-up to Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, only featured one song conceived by someone other than Brian (When She Boogalooed It).
    - It’s true that Mike was easily the most outspoken student of the Maharishi’s teachings, but the Friends album was still helmed entirely by Brian and was inspired by the entire band’s (varying degrees of) interest in Transcendental Meditation.
    - Brian having "little involvement" with the band following his release from the psychiatric hospital in 1968 is pretty much false. The 20/20 sessions took place mostly while he was in the hospital, so of course he had a decreased role in that album overall. Because of that experience, the band shifted to a more democratic dynamic by the time they began recording the Sunflower album, but Brian was still heavily involved with the writing and production of about half of the tracks! After Sunflower tanked, yeah, he started to check out a little bit.
    - 20/20 wasn’t the band trying to return to their older sound at all outside of the throwbacky lead single Do It Again. The majority of the album was the exact opposite, the band trying to make a name for themselves in the world of modern pop music, experimenting with hard rock, bubblegum, baroque pop, etc. It’s also strange that you mentioned Bluebirds Over the Mountain - a huge flop! - as a notable single and not I Can Hear Music, which was a pretty big hit by late 60s Beach Boys standards!
    - You say that Brian was "barely contributing" prior to the making of Holland. While it’s true that his involvement was significantly decreased, he was the brains behind both of the So Tough singles you mention seconds earlier!
    - Brian hadn’t exactly cleaned up his act by the time of the Brian’s Back campaign. I think he was still just as into coke and alcohol as he ever was! He was just doing it backstage instead of in his bedroom. It also wasn’t the first time he’d performed with the group since 1964. He had appeared with them sporadically all throughout 1965-1974. But yes, it was the first time he toured with the group regularly since '64.
    - Adult/Child was pretty much a Brian solo project. I don’t think Carl and Dennis were any more enthused with it than Mike and Al.
    - Brian was absolutely not having a blossoming solo career in 1985 considering he wouldn’t debut as a solo artist until 1987!! Unless you count the aforementioned Caroline, No single.
    - The band weren’t leaving Brian behind on Still Cruisin’. By this time Brian’s solo career actually had blossomed, and his therapist/manager Eugene Landy was barring him from getting involved with the Beach Boys very much, eager to prove that he could be a self-sufficient artist.
    - Nothing technically wrong about the Mike v. Brian lawsuits bit, but it should be noted that the Wouldn’t It Be Nice memoir is infamous for not having been written by Brian at all! Which makes the defamation suit that much more sad and ridiculous.
    - Brian technically has the production credit on the That’s Why God Made the Radio album, but I think it’s understood that Joe Thomas did most of the actual work there.
Overall, though, cool video! I can tell this was made by a fellow Beach Boys enthusiast, so from one to another, thanks for giving me something to do for an hour on a sleepy Sunday morning!

I grew up in a lot of turmoil. In My Room always got to me. You just close your door and you have a world where you can tell your secrets to.
The Beach Boys reunion tour with Brian at Garden State Arts Center (Holmdel NJ) was my first concert, Christopher Cross opened for them. I had the fortune of seeing them again years later in Mahwah NJ with the freaking Village People opening for them. Looks like they really.. got around.
I had never heard about the R&R Hall of Fame speech.. yeesh. Great Video

In the summer of 1969, the Beach Boys played at Steel Pier in Atlantic City, and my friend and I worked at a small, outdoor boardwalk custard stand. Right as we we closing up one night (midnight), this group of dirty, barefoot, stoners came up and wanted milkshakes. I said no...we were closed. I wanted to leave. One of the other workers said "That's Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys!!" GASP! And I said "I don't care!" but she made them shakes. I was pissed! Manson was in that group, although we didn't know that at the time (really short guy 😂). Also three of his girls for Dennis. I wonder if I came close to being whacked that night!
In my vinyl collection, I have the following original Beach Boy 45's in their original covers: "Wouldn't It Be Nice/"God Only Knows; "California Girls"/"Let Him Run Wild" (B&W photos); "Help Me Rhonda"/"Kiss Me Baby"; "Don't Worry Baby"/"I Get Around; "Please Let Me Wonder"/"Do You Wanna Dance"; "When I Grow Up (to be a man)"/She Knows Me Too Well"; and "Dance, Dance, Dance"/"The Warmth Of The Sun". I also have the original "Beach Boys Christmas Album". Still enjoy "Little Saint Nick" and used to play the album every Christmas.
Thanks for a great video! Really brought back wonderful memories.

By the way one of my many favorite Beach Boys sangs is called "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" a Dennis Wilson song. I also love the entire Brian Wilson version of "Smile".

I didn’t think Mr. Beat was so hip. Great video, The Beach Boys are legends.
Side note, I would call it a misconception that Brian was uninvolved for the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey/Friends era. Although his ambition had dropped wildly, he was still undoubtedly at the helm. Especially Friends, that album was his baby.

You cant talk about the Beach Boys without mentioning the Smile Sessions which are the actual recordings the Beach Boys worked on in 1967 for the album Smile... theres a magical energy in the tapestry of those recordings which remains unmatched in the rest of their discography, and it kind of changed my life listening to it. I have no idea how people would have reacted to it had it been released in '67, however 😅

Nice video - The No 1 hit version of Help Me Rhonda is on the Summer Days album - some of the so-called flops you mentioned such as the Friends and Wild Honey albums are now considered Lo-fi masterpieces - here in the UK some Beach Boys singles were big hits unlike in the USA - in the UK Do it Again was no 1, Darlin’, Wild Honey, Cottonfields, I Can Hear Music were all big hits unlike in the USA - although later Beach Boys albums were not that good compared with their earlier ones they still contained some good tracks!

It's really hard to imagine just how young these kids were when they started out. I've been to the site of the house in Hawthorne where the Wilson brothers grew up and started the band. It's unfortunate it had to be torn town to make room for the 105 Freeway, however there is a nice monument commemorating the site.
