- In 1997, Norm performed at a fundraiser for the University of Iowa athletic department at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City with fellow SNL alums Jim Breuer and Darrell Hammond. Norm's performance was not well received by the 1,200 Iowans, which was filled with mostly families with kids. The Reaction was so negative that University of Iowa Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby issued an apology the day after. "To call it off-color would be a significant understatment," Bowlsby said. Bowlsby estimated 80% of the audience walked out during the show.

My favorite part of the article is where it lists what offended the people and gax sex and masturbating were the main offenses while the pig sex part was just an afterthought. Makes me wonder about Iowans..

The Iowa incident was kinda the anti- Bob Saget Roast. At the roast they wanted him to be extra dirty, so he was clean. But here he gets invited to a fundraiser and told to be clean and comes out with a beastiality bit. There wasn't a deeper subtext to these incidents. I think Conan nailed it when he said at the core of Norm was a mischievous child. Questioning everything, and never to be told what to do. It was why people loved him, but it also often worked against him. Patrice O'Neal seemed to have a similar quality for better and worse. The difference being I don't think Norm had a legitimate malicious bone in his body. It was all just play for him. Anyway, fantastic document.
Well said. It's almost cliche to say now but Norm was such a genius. There's an interview where he talks about how he thinks bombing is funny and he says something along the lines of:
"What is humour, really? What makes something funny? It's when something unexpected happens. So if you go see a stand up comedian, the expectation is they'll be funny. So if they're not funny, that's funny!"
I always loved that because it was a great insight into his style and attitude.
Yeah you go out there with the intent to make people laugh and be joyful. And they end up hating your guts. That’s comedy.
@Stugna Bulah he was very good at trolling but if you think that's all there is to his comedy you don't really know much about him :)
According to him he thought it was a typical college crowd and he usually didn't lie to Howard Stern like he did to other radio shoes
