Great review fc! Some very useful insights and comps from a guy who has ridden so many eMTB's. I just built mine up! It looks amazing too with custom wrap by Stikrd. I did full AXS and skipped the flat screen since the new controller tells me everything I need to know while in motion, just like my Gen2 Levo. I do really appreciate the MasterMind on my KSL, but in all honesty I hardly ever look at it, so I don't think I will miss all the data more than I love the clean cockpit. As soon as the embargo lifts on something new I'll post up pics so folks can see how clean the front of this bike can be. Favorite part of your review? Now I don't have to read the instructions about how to turn my lights on and off, LoL!
FTR, we just built one with the DHX2 long stroked and it fits very cleanly. Bike looks proper with a 180 Factory 38 up front. I put a DVO Jade X coil in mine to see if it will fit and it looks like that one will work just barely. Didn't swap the hardware as that rear shock eye hardware kit is not something that wants to come out easily and I'm running the Float X2 for the photo shoot first... So full test on that to come later.
I think Ibis hit it out of the park with this Oso. I have spent a lot of time very close to this bike and the detail work is very Gen3 looking, which makes sense given it is their 3rd Gen! The look is totally eye popping and by far the best looking mono-swing arm ever. Those older models you flashed were just terrible on the eyes while Roxy's flowy design is just artful and functional at the same time. Never an easy task! I sort of hated on the lighting system at first, but then realized that I've been riding at night for three decades and have always wanted built in lights, lol. These are just perfect for getting to and from the trails more safely and allows us to save the battery of our main trail light for riding trails. Very clean too.
Last I just have to throw props to the new logo and branding. Ibis has never blasted us with their logos and this bike has plenty of real estate to put big logos all over, and they did not. Instead they have a very clean logo that looks great. I'll miss the classic head badge on the one hand while appreciating the new head badge with the other. None of our customers ever could tell what that old head badge was about anyhow!
Another killer Ibis bike takes flight...

Thanks for the review Francis. It took a minute to come to grips with the frame design but by the end of the video and listening to the segment with Roxy explaining the design process I've come around. I love that they went for a full power, long travel eBike and made it ride like a regular mtb. Looks like Scot and his team hit a home run. And yeah, that display needs to be integrated in the top tube.

I'm ok with the mono-swing arm...and the DW link to reduce pedal feedback or squatting. So the kinematics look promising, and best looking mono-link I've seen. I trust your "stiffness appraisal" and performance review. I think the DH and Enduro race crowd be luv'n it. But it's more "moto" E-mtb looking than "trail-duro" analogue E-mtb looking....it's swing arm just "stands" out more. I know it's full-powered. Again, Class 1 trail access makes it harder for stealth. ln contrast, take the Trek Fuel Ex-e. Now beef it up to a TQ 65nNm motor, and toss in a 475 Wh battery with 160 rear travel and boom...perfection🤯 Maybe the Transition Relay Fazua 60 next Spring will be the happy medium 42 lb enduro E-mtb.🍻

It seems that every Ibis bike is beautiful. Somehow they are even able to make a Mono Swingarm look fancy! I love how they are not afraid to combine SRAM and Shimano. It’s about time this is done. Maybe soon all of these components will be interchangeable. baahaaahaa.
I hope someday I will be able to ride this bike and see all the fun for myself.

    Wow, Wow, Wow!!
About 3 years ago I went to the Ibis HQ to demo the V1 Ripmo and take a tour. They voluntarily told me they are working on an Ebike. Earlier this year I rode at Skeggs and there was a guy connected to Ibis who said they been testing Prototypes. So I'm not surprised they finally released one!
I am surprised that there is only one price point though. I wouldn't be surprised if they release an Oso AF next week!...LOL.
$11K is steep though. I'm sure it lives up to their reputation! They really put the time in to create great bikes!
I'm still loving my V1 Ripmo and enjoy the benefits of Cardio. I'll eventually get one though. I did demo a Levo in Santa Cruz which was impressive a few months back. But am very loyal to Ibis so I'll probably get one eventually. I'd love to demo one!
Btw, the video stated the Medium is a Mullet? I'm sure you can get a 29er in a Medium?
Also, isn't that Pacifica you're demoing it at?
I can't wait to watch JKW's video on this. I'm sure it will be an interesting review!!

I love the look of that swing arm, that’s a beautiful bike. Another thing I really like is that there’s plenty of room in the middle triangle for an extender battery. Hopefully Bosch comes out with an extender battery soon, hopefully for next year‘s model. Carrying 1150 watts for big rides (750/400), would be just freaking awesome, and if that bike is plush enough, it’ll be no problem to go that far. I think they’re on the right path.

    • @mrtominboulder
      @mrtominboulder ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am part of a group of riders in Colorado that does long rides. So everybody is carrying two batteries these days. We’ve been in need of great solutions from manufactures so we can have the bike carrying 950 to 1200 Watts or so. We’re getting too old to keep caring extra batteries on our back. Thanks for the video.

Great review as always Francis! Love the look and sound freaking amazing. For me, the Bosch system is a complete deal breaker. From the noise to the ride feel and especially the display and controls. Ibis should have waited till Bosch release their new display systems. For that sort of money, I think it should be discrete and work perfectly.

  • @wasaker09
    @wasaker09 ปีที่แล้ว

Aside from the weight and the display, this looks perfect, even to this Luddite. I'll probably never own an ebike but a Levo demo fell on my lap several weeks ago and I couldn't help but smile while powering up some tight and overgrade switchbacks. They're fun for sure!

@@EMTBReview I'll probably get one for trail work duties at my local adventure loop. 8 miles of riding just to get to the problem spots! Also, for exploring the Lost Sierra! The reason I bikepack there is to get to some really cool spots that are impossible to access as a day trip.
Anyway, like I always say, thanks to you early adopters that enable manufacturers to invest R&D in these things. I'll be waiting for the trickle down effects. Hahaha. Hey, I did my part by buying a gen 2 Prius, now we are starting to see EVs proliferate.

Possibly the best mono-arm design yet, but ibis bikes are always super divisive design wise, I really like the options it provides you with, dual crown forks, mullet, travel options etc and best ebike motor with worst control system imo.

I think it’s a good decision by Ibis to go all in with the short chain stay mono-link, easy battery access and integrated lighting.
They are one of the few companies that can pull that off without being butchered in the comment sections and it’s all very practical.
Personally I’d wish for a lighter version without removable battery and the lights. Ideally with a EP8 Shimano.

Juaquin Miller Park, Pacifica, Briones, Carlmont and Mt. Sutro are all fun but those 2 spots are the best in the bay area if you ask me. If you have the time to drive then Santa Cruz, Downeyville and Auburn are amazing as well

Man, I've been nearing analysis paralysis looking at e-bikes the past few weeks. Bikes at the top of the list have been the Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay, Yeti 160e, 2023 Orbea Wild, and this one. I live in Phoenix with a lot of rocky techy climbs and I was all about the Rocky Mountain until I heard so many people complaining about the low bottom bracket and constant pedal strikes which would definitely be an issue on the trails I ride so that was a no-go. The 160e sounds awesome, but between its super stiff suspension (set up for racing) and the noisy ep8 motor (whhhhhyyyyy on a $13k bike???) it ended up taking a step down. I really like what I'm reading and seeing about the brand new Orbea Wild, but availability is an issue. My LBS as well as a few online retailers are saying July at the earliest for the M-TEAM edition and I just don't want to wait that long. So it was down to the Oso and between having a Ripley v4 and everything I'm hearing about it, I decided to go for it. I should get it in a week or so, cannot wait! Your video definitely helped me decide, there really aren't a lot of reviews out there that I could find. And I figured that if I get the Oso and it's just not for me, I can ride it until the Wild's start becoming available (I rode the previous Wild and loved it).

Typical Ibis beauty! I have 2 Ibis bikes already. Lights s/b optional. Love the mullet. They have cheapened their legendary headmast!

Ok Francis, having just come from your Heckler review to this, how would you compare both of the Santa Cruz's to the Ibis, especially when considering the weight difference?

Keep up your good work great information and descriptions. Would like to hear your review after the winter months.
With such tight /level clearances around the shock does it load up with loam brush/mud
I am impressed with the Oso considering buying one next year. I do not like the light system and the added cost nor do I like the Bosch display and switch.

It’s an interesting bike for sure. Great review. But $11k and fox performance feels off. Curious how you’d compare the Nukeproof Megawatt that’s coming to the US to the Oso and other Enduro eMTBs you reviewed (Commencal, SC Bullit). I think price point is more reasonable and it has received positive feedback on ride feel.

I personally think Ibis nailed it with the looks overall. The mini swingarm was done right here and it's one of my favorite looking Ebikes. Glad to see thin mix things up and make a fun different looking bike. Would 100% buy one if I was a dentist

Hi Francis, honestly how do you find the 50lbs weight of this bike? I love the look of it but the SC Heckler 29 is at least in the 40lbs range - 50lbs seems almost too heavy. I have a farmer's fence near one of my trails (UK) - I have to lift my bike over it. Can't see how I could lift this over a fence. As much as MTB is about riding it can also be about lifting/pushing as off-road terrain can be very diverse.

I test rode an Ibis with duolink rear recently and was impressed by it, so i was drawn to your e-Ibis review. The look? first impression was that it looks heavy or maybe even clunky. But the more I looked at it the more I liked it. perhaps there was little or no chain slap?
excellent review. You really are hitting on my hot questions. I've got a 7 year old Trek Fuel EX9 and am looking to move over to an e bike - my choice at present is the Trek Fuel EXe 9.7 SO - when I hear you say the bigger motor is where its at with e bikes - makes me take notice and question my thinking that I just want that little extra boost for that top part of the climb where I'd have to bail out and push or perhaps that unexpected rock that appears around a tight corner.

When I saw this I immediately thought of a ebike from Pole out of Finland. The Oso is definitely for some of the more technical descents around Montara mountain and bike parks in Tahoe. I prefer the original Ibis logo. I like everything about the Oso except for the weight. For my first ebike I'd buy the Ibis if Trek had not come out their EXE.

Incredible bike that desperately needs accessory corrections. Lights should be 1500 Lumen min with trail beam pattern and detachable heads. Display and buttons are really sub par. Re route and clean up the housing. Still an amazing bike from ibis.

Really like the look of this bike. I agree the electronics look horrible and ruin the overall experience. Much nicer with top tube integrated electronics and smaller more precise buttons for mode switching. I really wish all the motor mfg's could crack the silence code and get more motors like the new TQ.

Hi Francis. What size were you riding? I want to pull the trigger on this bike but I am 5' 6". The reach number on the medium at 460 is longer than my usual. I am have ridden 430 - 450 depending on the bike. Don't want the small as it comes with a 625 watt battery and they aren't available ATM. Thanks,

Awesome bike! And the fact that you can bump up the travel front and rear, is always welcome! Also, the lights can be disassembled in order to reduce battery consumption. How would you compare it to the Pivot Shuttle LT? Keep up the good work!
