- Today's spoiler free anime review covers Kyoukai Senki season 1, a 13 episode war drama mech anime. So far there's not much to say about its story as it feels like the introduction to a 50 episode anime, but its visuals are easily the high point as its a full non GC mech anime with some intense fights. #anime

This anime is good. Its not great or ground breaking. It's simple, pretty to watch, and the characters are simple enough to easily understand while just complicated enough to communicate SOME deeper themes. It's a nice beginner anime to ease people into the Mecha anime genre. It's a solid anime that you can reliably watch and enjoy if you have nothing better to watch or don't have the energy to dedicate to something more complex. That doesn't make it bad. It makes it somewhat refreshing to me. I miss naive heroes who just want to help. It makes me remember my child hood watching bakugan. I like this anime because its refreshing compared to what I normally watch.
Kyoukai Senki is the greatest mecha anime of 2021, such as 86 Eighty-Six Muv-Luv Alternative, Rumble Garanndoll and even Sakugan. And so, BobSamurai is trying to do the review of Schwarzesmarken and Muv-Luv Alternative season 1 real soon.

I've only ever seen Neon Genesis Evangelion as far as mech anime. I've literally only seen a deconstruction without actually watching what's it's deconstructed 😓
Friendly reminder : Kyoukai Senki was originally Bandai idea for making a new mecha show that has nothing to do with Gundam but still maintain the mecha theme (war, insurgent, politics, teenage pilot, blood n iron clanging)
p/s : it was targeted for new mecha fan (whom started of with Darling in the Franxx) n old mecha fan with the focus of easy to design model kits
p/s 02 : for old mecha fan it has that Code Geas taste with a pinch of Votom seasoning
The stories are not great but I appreciate them for what they did with the animations. At least, they done really great job with the mecha stuffs. it's not easy to do 2D mecha so I don't mind they having reuse cuts. It's also kinda shame because this show look so great for full 2D mecha for this day.
It's not easy to do mecha anime. I mean, 86 anime keep delayed so many time. Plus, A-1 is not mecha studio. Now, I'm curious what if this studio is the one that make 86 anime not A-1. One things I know they're going to do is redesign the mecha because mecha design in 86 anime right now are straight from LN. Interesting about Sunrise that they have mechanical designers.

Some studio can make great animation but the shows are always bad. I frustrated every time I see bad anime have better animation than anime that have good stories.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this show, and Im a big fan of the more ultra serious real robot genre. who tends to scoff at shows like this but I guess I was just in the mood for something light hearted, but still grounded.
The action still suffers from “enemy mechs stand around waiting to get blown up” syndrome but since 95% of the mechs in this show are controlled by “basic” AI it didn’t bother me nearly as much as a typical gundam series.
I also didn’t mind the Comedy relief Ai’s that aid the protagonists. But I might be just desensitized from re-watching Gits-SAC so many times and the Ai’s in this show don’t get anywhere near as grating as the Tachikomas did at certain points.
If you enjoyed this but wish for more Galactic Heroes-level socio-political commentary; I suggest giving Nobuyoshi Habara's previous work "Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Soldiers of Love" a shot!
Seeing as you've already given 2199 a watch, I'm surprised you haven't yet approached Habara and Fukui's dense and masterful adaptation of the beloved classic Farewell Yamato. When can we expect it? :D
Yea I’ve been meaning to do that. Maybe I’ll just rewatch the first series and continue on through giving each one an individual review sometime

I stopped halfway in watching it, along with 86 Season 2. But I'll continue to watch them later on
I ended up dropping this one, which is sad because I was looking forward to a new mecha anime that wasn't Gundam, but I just found it too generic and boring. I might try and give it another chance later when it's done airing maybe though.
The writing in terms of how boring the main characters were and the annoying kiddish AI characters from what you mention Bob, along with the boring parts with the farming and random things, with the sudden AI battle thing, seems more like the writing of the first Gundam Build Divers which was basically criticized by a lot of Gundam fans and even the Build Fighters fans as being really boring and same with most of the characters being really boring. It makes sense because they both share the same Series Composer so the writing has the same pros and cons. Literally they had a different composer for Build Divers ReRise which was pretty much way better as there was an actual plot with the writing getting better in terms of execution over time. So seriously I don't understand why Sunrise had to revert back to using the Series Composer from Build Divers that made a lot of people not watch the show for Kyoukai Senki.
So glad I’m not the only one who thinks this writing is pretty bland/boring. I even turned off my brain to watch this. HOWEVER. It became very clear this writing was bad (at least for me) when (SPOILER) Ms. Risa died. I don’t even care she died at all, it was the way she died that annoyed me. Why would you drive at a mobile suit, shooting your useless bullets, thinking that it would do something?! That death felt so rushed that I didn’t even feel it. Any deaths in this anime just don’t hit 😐.
But I was hopeful. I bit the bullet. I finished season 1 and began watching season 2 or part 2, idc. Amou comes back (real shocker there) and he comes back with this edgyness. So I’m thinking “Oh shit, something bad happened to him. I’m kinda interested now.” And then they show us the flashback that made him so edgy. And that’s when I knew this series was pretty boring. The reason for his edgyness is not because he lost more people he cared about or had some dark realization of humanity or some shit. THIS MF GOT DEPRESSED BECAUSE HE KILLED ONE BAD GUY AND SOME LITTLE KIDS SAW THAT. AND HE SAYS (I’M PARAPHRASING) “THE EXPRESSION OF THE ENEMIES I KILLED AND THE CHILDREN’S SCARED EXPRESSIONS HAUNT ME”
ARE YOU SHITTING ME?! The enemy expressions are understandable but the thing that’s bothering him the most is the CHILDREN. That’s what’s made him so “edgy”. There’s more to the bad guy shooting scene (like the fact that the children ran into the arms of the good adults who killed WAY more people RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM, but APPARENTLY Amou is the scary one. Ok sure buddy) but I’m at my limit. I’ll admit that this show probably isn’t for me so I’m not gonna call it complete garbage. Just isn’t for me.

This show sounds like Code Geass, and I DO NOT consider that a good thing. The setting, the tone shifts, the cuteness, it just sounds too similar to it.
i really like the more industrial mecha designs and i really wanted to like it but amaim is some of the most generic and boring shit ive ever watched. the overall plot and world is such a nothing burger and all of the characters and their designs are so flat and uninteresting
