Mind Blowing Interchanges Around The World

- Interchanges are great! Why? Because unlike standard intersections, they allow free flow of intersecting roads rather than having to stop at traffic lights or roundabouts. But sometimes interchanges can be extremely complicated with many junctions and even several levels (those are called stack interchanges). Such a complicated interchange is sometimes nicknamed “Spaghetti Junction“.
Let's have a look at the top 10 mind blowing interchanges around the world.

I would go miles out of my way to avoid these interchanges!
You're a loser if you're driving a car.
It would be nice if you would leave the view of the interchange on the screen for more than 2 seconds. You transitioned between scenes so quickly if we blinked we would miss it.
Pause button
@Scott Duffy Yes I know. I did pause the video to see the interchanges but it gets pretty annoying to have to do that repeatedly.
@@brucea9871 I get it
Yeah, this video was more so mildly infuriating for things like that. Like what is happening at 3:11. Diverging diamond interchange apparently? But instead the narrator talks about the name of the junction and how it's named John F. Kennedy but not for JFK himself but for the bridge named after JFK... which would mean it's still named after JFK... so redundant
@Yasin Razak Yeah I'm interested in astronomy and some time ago I learned there was an asteroid named Mr. Spock - but the article in which I read that claimed it was NOT named after the character in the original Star Trek series. Umm, what? It turns out it was named after a cat owned by the astronomer who discovered the asteroid. He named his cat Mr. Spock because the cat had ears similar to Mr. Spock's. Well then the asteroid was named after Mr. Spock after all wasn't it?
The High Five interchange in Dallas TX.
Gravelly Hill Junction (the ORIGINAL Spaghetti Junction) is so complex as it had to deal with the M6 motorway, the A38(M) and A5127 from the centre of Birmingham ,the A5127 to Sutton Coldield and the A38 Tyburn Road. At the same time, the roadways had to avoid a canal, a railway line and what was the Nechells Power Station.
If you remember back in the 80's it used to extend through part of the city centre over new street and wades furniture store. (Showing my age)
I drive the South Bay interchange in Boston about three times a week.
It’s pretty normal. Sometimes you lose your GPS when you’re in one of the tunnels. No big deal.
Why does Shanghai has six levels of junctions? Well…… It’s because it’s shang”high” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In Chigh-na.
Boooo! 😂😂😂
NY has interchanges like that and I’m always talking out loud to myself-“ I want to go RIGHT THERE! How the hell do I do that?!” 😂😂😂
As an ex-Californian, I bring up east of downtown LA where I-5, I-10, US 101, and State 60 meet up. The typical reaction of drivers is "which lane should I be in?"
Ah, the I-10 and I-5, I remember that interchange.
There are also some mind blowing Interchanges from germany:
- the Autobahndreieck Funkturm in Berlin (A100 and A115),
- the Horster Dreieck near Hamburg (A1 and A7),
- the Sonnborner Kreuz in Wuppertal (A46, A535, B228 and L74)
- the Schkeuditzer Kreuz (from 1936) between Leipzig and Halle (A9 and A14)
and some others ...
Another favourite in Germany: Duisburg-Kaiserberg. There was not enough space to build a regular cloverleaf motorway junction, because of existing railway lines, houses and water. So they had to fit all the ramps into one of the four sections, resulting in three or four levels of Spaghetti.
Oh, and not to forget Wetzlarer Kreuz with its high capacity direct ramps for each connection, looking pretty much like some of the examples from the US in this video. Ironically, one of the two motorways it connects has never been continued beyond the first two and a half or so kilometres...
Nichts im Vergleich zu US! Vergiss deutsche Autobahnkreuze einfach, lol
One weird one: the interchange between I-196 nad US 131 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Lanes of US 131 go over those from the opposite direction, allowing directional flow in all directions. Grand Rapids is tiny in contrast to some of the other cities here mentioned, but this is an old interchange
I don't like these roads. Not because they are too complex, but they are signs of car-centric development.
could've mentioned what we call the "Mixmaster" in Dallas, TX. An interchange of I-35E, I-30, Woodall Rogers Fwy (Spur 366, connection to I-45 and US-75), Reunion Blvd, Riverfront Blvd, and Commerce St. Yes, all of that. I live in Dallas and fear this interchange.
I'm quite surprised you didn't include the Southern Hemisphere's largest interchange: the Light Horse interchange located in Sydney, Australia. It connects the M4, the M7 (two of the most major motorways in Sydney), and Wallgrove Rd.
Fascinating!!!
Really Enjoyed This VIDEO.
Many Thanks.

hi
One interesting motorway interchange in Australia is in BRISBANE where the Legacy Way tunnel, Clem7 Tunnel and the Airport Link M7 tunnel connects with the Bowen Bridge Road and Kingsford Smith Drive. So there is a very dense spiral like spaghetti junction with 3 major motorways immediately disappearing underground into tunnels that traverse the entire city. You emerge from one tunnel, do a spiral in the sky and then vanish into a completely different tunnel. It's quite amazing and helps greatly in dealing with traffic in a city with narrow surface level streets.
It's definitely the most complex interchange I've driven on.
I'm surprised that I-95 and Capital Beltway's interchange wasn't included
Washington DC does have one of the worst traffic in the nation. I’m surprised it wasn’t brought up either
I've always thought our interstate system was absurd. There had to be a better way.
_trains_
I'm still trying to understand what he means at 0:49 by the stack interchange in China being the only stack interchange in the world.
When I saw the MD interchange in Baltimore I really thought the “Mixing Bowl” on the Virginia side of the Capital Beltway would have been on the list, oh well, an opportunity missed.
Did the Hi5 in Dallas Texas not make it⸮ 😢
I remember when I was new in MA I kept on circling on South Bay Interchange. I stayed there for almost 30 minutes ,calling out for help🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 God is great now I can drive even in NY.
Oh how amazing 💝💝 I like your TH-cam channel
I’m surprised you didn’t include any intersections from Dubai. There are so many intersections here.
I love living out in the countryside.
0:51 Guess texas doesn't exist.
Did you have your most recent car crash over there?
everybody gangsta till grandma's house gets bulldosed to consturct a 128 way stack interchange
My favorite interchanges are in Toronto along 401 and the one close to the airport.
Jakarta also has a lot of spaghetti junction one example is Interchange Cikunir. Another one is Waru Interchange in Surabaya and Last one is the Tanjung Mulia Interchange in Medan.
I’m surprised you didn’t do the Houston’s I-10, 290, and 610 interchange.
These pictures looks like my old racetrack sets...lol!! Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology, the new american dream...
Two obvious omissions...the madness of the interchange that surrounds l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the southern Hemisphere's (yes, there is a southern half of the world) largest interchange, the Light Horse Interchange (so named after Australia's famous Light Horse Brigades of WW1) located in western Sydney NSW.
While interesting its not separating traffic so much as its an area of "free for all" car rugby :P
Saying one must stop at roundabouts is false, stopping may be necessary only when the roundabout is full.
I just came back from DC, and I stayed in La Plata, Md
! Very Good !
What about the Jane Byrne Interchange in Chicago, Illinois? That interchange is very big and very busy because it connects the Dan Ryan Expressway and the Kennedy Expressway.
Old couple on vacation, "Hay Ethel, did you remember to bring that map of which interchange we got off on?"
Have been through three intersections - Kentucky, Mass and CA
A lot of footage are not the interchanges mentioned in this video
Knock off the mind bending transitions between vids.
Quebec Montreal are very high also i went to one last year i enjoyed it
You could have added the Gonzalitos interchange at Monterrey, Mexico!
Don’t forget about the Bruckner and Kew Gardens Interchanges in New York City!
Very good
The South Bay Interchange extends south along 93 to Southampton Street in South Boston and east along Route 90 almost to the Ted Williams/Third Harbor Tunnel in the (South Boston Commonwealth Flats) Seaport District
I think half the images from that section of video aren't even from the interchange itself
Good
There's 2 stack interchanges in Denver, CO they're only 3 levels but they're stack interchanges nonetheless
I have actually driven on 3 of them. #2, #6 and #9.
Suprised the Marquette interchange in Milwaukee did not make the list.
5:25 is from the game cities skylines.
🔥
I have trouble with the one in red cloud Nebraska.
Why isn’t there I-495 and I-95 and I-395 interchange its mind blowing
I never thought transistions would make me feel this dizzy
Agreed. Completely overused.
actual monstrocities, and no they don't transfer many people compared to the area they take as you make it sound, still pretty good video,
Judge Harry Pregerson interchange is the best because you can exit and enter on every side
This makes me want to avoid all of them
But thats good because im from the UK
Interchange yang paling fantastic berada di China!
Better not miss an exit, chinese drivers challenge accepted
0:46 by the definition of a stack interchange this claim is wildly untrue.
No Houston TX in the List ? 🤔
Gigantic interchanges have three significant drawbacks: 1) They are crazy expensive to build and maintain 2) They cause a ton of kilometers-long overruns for cars. You can't just turn left, you need to pass 3 spirals and 2 ramps to do it. So, more time, more gasoline, more noise and air pollution. 3) They still don't prevent traffic jams: China, Japan, London, California - they all seriously suffer from it despite interchanges they built.
How easy it is to get lost in the highways around D.C…
Toronto has at least 2 that are bigger than most of these.
Have a google earth look at Golden Glades interchange in Miami Gardens. Absolutely nasty!
For starters. Penchala interchange in Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia
the overview of Number 10 looks like cities skylines
i think you must visit Houston and Dallas TX. you will change your mind.
Many of these highways doesn't even deserve to be on this list. Mostly American cities but Americans always have to make everything about themselves.
This is what I called a pile of roads
Biggest US 290/ I 10 / I610 interchange in Houston
We have massive interchanges in Africa too, you know
Piazza di Porta Maggiore in Rome.
This is a very strange interchange.
Ive never had spaghetti that looks like a highway.
Where is knooppunt Galder in the Netherlands? Staggering 2 layers
None of those interchanges blew my mind away, it is logical i build for a fairly easy usage, just by using the logic :)
"Spaghetti Junction" near Atlanta GA is pretty bad (then again, driving around Atlanta, including near the airport) is just bad and can be confusing if you're not using GPS or you don't know the area. Also some of the roads around Chicago, particularly where all the various offshots of "I-90" come together and split off can be very confusing. Although not the end of the world if you mis an exit as there are plenty of exits, although may have to backtrack a bit. But I would say so far, near Atlanta is the worst I've driven through yet.
Someday, when we have only autonomous vehicles on the road, all of them would likely be operated by an AI / GPS cloud of some kind connected to every autonomous vehicle operating on every highway. Like air traffic control, the AI highway cloud would control the autonomous vehicle's speed, the best routes to take to avoid congestion, and increase overall highway efficiency. Autonomous taxis might be what many people in the future will choose instead of owning a vehicle. I suspect these autonomous taxis would be driving people 24 hours a day except for maintenance, cleaning, and charging. So I believe these taxis will be available and nearby most everyone someday and cheaper than owning a vehicle. To access the interior of the autonomous taxi, you would simply slide something like a credit card across the door of the autonomous taxi, identifying you and charging your account for today's use of the autonomous taxi - the door to the autonomous vehicle opens. I believe these autonomous taxis will be made extra durable with windows that perhaps can't break and other features to protect the chasis of the autonomous taxi from vandalism.
🚕 🚗 🚕 🚗 🚕 🚗 🚕 🚗 🚕 🚗 🚕 🚗
All these cuts make it very hard to follow which interchange your are presenting in each scene and it comes nowhere clear how the shown interchanges are called because you use several different shots for the same interchange. Also the selection is quiet random and often totally unfounded
You should start from number 10 to number 1
How could you not mention the central artery project through Boston? That was about $14 Billion in cost over more than 10 years time
You missed out Kathipara interchange in Chennai India, this is asia's largest cloverleaf interchange.
Kathipara is not even the biggest cloverleaf in Chennai what are you talking about😂😂
It’s about complex not the biggest one
@@rakshithv6199 not even the most complex, it's just the largest flyover cloverleaf, which is a rare type of interchange to begin with
WTF WOULD I SUBSCRIBE BEFORE I EVEN WATCH THE VIDEO?!?!?
You miss Houston also
Just a random sample of 10 interchanges. Why include Baltimore 95/695? Nothing notable about that, especially considering that it’s very similar in design to Shanghai, Atlanta, and Los Angeles earlier in the video.
That one in Italy is not that complex. But what about checking out the ring of Antwerp or the ring of Brussels? 😇 Especially Antwerpen-Zuid is Interesting 😇
And I love you, Belgians 🖤💛❤️
Both the Brussels and Antwerp "ring" are belt ways circling both cities, these are not considered as one interchange.
And both rings are less than perfect, the Brussels one deviates 30 km to the south (mainly because some posh Brussels neighbourhoods didn't want a motorway passing through) while the western part of the Antwerp Ring is a bits and pieces puzzle and with the only toll tunnel in Belgium.
@@flitsertheo Maybe I was a bit unclear. I wanted to say that the Antwerp Beltway has very interesting interchanges 🤔
@@tadzionl Ok. I don't know the Antwerp beltway that well but unfortunately I have to suffer the Brussels one every working day.
That Brussels beltway will be refurbished in the next few years. Which is long overdue since nothing much was changed since its completion in the 1980s.
@@flitsertheo I also know the Brussels one 😉 Less chaotic than the Antwerp one 😉
@@tadzionl Less lanes though this is partly due to the "greens" always opposing any enlargement of the Brussels Ring. If they had their way they would turn the Ring into a pedestrian walkway.
You don't have to stop at roundabouts, that's the whole point.
Junctions are only complicated if signage is rubbish
Keep in mind, those structures in China and Japan have to be seriously earthquake-proof. 😳
Such complex interchanges, and still can't handle the amount of people traffic as a 2 lane railway
Yup!!
A car can take you directly to your home. But if I take a train, I still have the problem of getting home from the train station. In suburbs or rural areas, there may not be a train station within walking distance.
Where is Chongqing City interchange?
😂 have the maker of this video ever been to Texas? 😂
I was expecting Mulholland Intersection. Now I'm disappointed 😔
Did you have your most recent car crash over there?
where is that interchange
dystopian
No Beltway 8 stack on the list!
Most complicated one of the Netherlands is probably Ridderkerk.
Found that as well, easy enough to navigate, from above it looks like badly done shoelaces.
just 1 more lane
Whats up whit dallas 😢
You never mentioned the high five in Dallas TX. Or the mixmaster in Ft. Worth TX. Poor research.
So are you saying Dubai Sheikh zayed road didn't even make it top 10?
There can be great interchange in Germany.
Take the train........EVERY TIME!
