Amazing that it's all just an eighth note roll, but it's machine-like in precision, and the accents are really the thing, along with the combining of the hit hat, and traveling around the toms and implication of an incredibly fast bass drum foot dance. I'll go out on a limb and say that no one else can do this. Unique!
I remember when I was a kid--not having heard the drums in person. I heard them in the 6th grade when some kid played a crappy rock beat on the school set, and I got an adrenaline rush just from hearing it. I knew the drums were it for me after that. This solo brought me back to that moment where you feel almost "giddy" when you hear such talent. Truly amazing. No drummer can match Jojo for technique and style
storytelling in a language everybody understands. One can imagine being in Basel during the carnival when the drum corps play in the streets. Beautiful!
Oh my goodness, that was amazing! I've always wanted to do an Akira(anime)-inspired drum solo, where is sounded tribalistic in nature because of different drums doing similar things. This did exactly what I was imagining, only Mr. Mayer did it way better than I ever could. I'm so happy.
@lexusowner You're not hearing the syncopation with the right hand, also accented with the kick, while he keeps a steady whipping motion (moeller) motion with the left, and having the hi-hat splash together the entire time. Near the end he accents with both hands. You're basically just missing some awesome limb independence, and not to mention the PERFECT, I mean, fucking PERFECT hand technique involved throughout.
his left hand, literally, only stops 3 times. 4:14, 4:39, and the end when he finishes. and when his left hand isnt playing, something else is doing the exact same thing. this man is a machine
@JUVEinter2a1il5DICEM he is manipulating the rebound of the stick in both hands. The technique is known as a moeller drop bounce with the right hand and the left hand is utilizing a thumb stroke and the fingers push the stick back up into the air. You just release and catch.c When the solo becomes more dynamic in the last quarter hes just using moeller pull out accents.
Does anyone know some DVDs (other than Jojos DVD, which I already have) for helping with this kind of technique? Especially for traditional grip. It'd be greatly appreciated.
hes actually using the freestroke technique, which in a way is the exact opposite movement of the moeller technique. Its controlled by the downward movement of his wrist, then the upward snap of his wrist and fingers.
Well said, Duplacite. This is actually a really cool drum solo in that I've never heard anything quite like it. Originality goes a long way with me. At the same time I prefer drumming that far outclasses this type of drumming. And when I say this, I am not suggesting that this is Jojo's best. This is just ONE piece. He obviously has a vast array of skillsets....geeze, I was only talking about this one piece.
hahaha i'm so relieved to see it's not that easy for him when i see his faces while playing!! means he's really human after all... but maybe a superior one!! :)
What a freaky ass solo! It doesn't really pick up until 0:58 when he swaps hand technique. It may be very technically impressive, but its not really interesting. Still gotta love that man!
well, personally I like both, maybe even portnoy a little bit more since he's in one of my favourite bands, but this guy is miles above him and most other drummers these days.
He can do that a LOT faster, and with both feet too. It's pretty sick. He can do with one foot what many drummers can't do with a double pedal. He does it a little in this video if you listen for it.
@PastyMook wow woops lol, idk why but anytime i see the name joey (the fac that everyone brings up that guy on every single drum video) joey jordison comes to mind

being a drummer myself and with respect to ALL drummers out there,i can say with no regret, this is best hand tecnique solo I have EVER seen!!!
I remember when I was a kid--not having heard the drums in person. I heard them in the 6th grade when some kid played a crappy rock beat on the school set, and I got an adrenaline rush just from hearing it. I knew the drums were it for me after that.

Forget technique, that was one of the most beautiful drum solos I've ever heard! Very well composed.
This is one of the neatest drum solos I've seen. Very simple, but its so cohesive!
Jojo is becoming one of my favorite drummers. Awesome.
the best drummer in th world......who say no?????
One time I threw a pack of 20 sticks at my drum.
That was the only time I ever played as fast as Jojo.
... One of the coolest drum solos ever put together ...
storytelling in a language everybody understands. One can imagine being in Basel during the carnival when the drum corps play in the streets. Beautiful!
Beautiful technique! Among the world's best drummers...a true master! Yeah Jojo!!!
One of the best drumsolos i ever heard!!! So technical still extremely musical!!!
This is one of my favorite compositions by JoJo... hands down........ or hands fast... or whatever..
this one of best drum solo's I've ever heard...WOW!!!!

Wow you tube should recommend this❤❤❤
It's great to hear Jojo playing outside of his drum&bass vocabulary for a change whilst still employing the same techniques.
true
He's just one of my favorit drummers ! So very very nice !
his left hand, literally, only stops 3 times. 4:14, 4:39, and the end when he finishes. and when his left hand isnt playing, something else is doing the exact same thing.
this man is a machine
First Jojo video I saw Years ago and Still Blows me away! I wish the Version on His Dvd was this long...

Gotta love this man.
The bass drum and floor tom sound monstrous
Does anyone know some DVDs (other than Jojos DVD, which I already have) for helping with this kind of technique? Especially for traditional grip.

His Technique Is Flawless!
So cool! A great lesson in technique for all beginners and advanced players to pay close attention to.
extraterestrial!!!

"Steve reich: Music for 1 Drummer" ...

that is captivating. I was engulfed from the first stroke.
in some parts it sounds like minimum two drummers, where the snare just fires through and the right hand does melodies. omfg this is amazing
Very musical
So, so cool!
Beautiful.
guys this is like psychedelic...he is a composer...
the more u watch him, the more inspire you will be.
This ist just fucking ridiculos.... One of the best solos i´ve ever seen
it sounds kind of weird, yet awesome, definitely one of my favorite solos
just makes you feel good.
so amazing...
Just one word : AWSOME !!!!!!!!!!!
kept up the left hand like that for 7 minutes?!?! not human...
and the hats are still going on and sing the time on the right place where it should be...omg ... swiss quality^^
Yep, as usual...Jo Jo brilliance!
Que barbaro es realmente un grande..
Oh my GOD.
Can haz lessons pls?
Seriously though, that was awesome. Second to no drummer i have ever seen.
buddy rich would be soo proud!
After listening to this, I was ready to march into battle.
If it ever comes to man verses machine, send in this guy!
amazing
hahaha
i'm so relieved to see it's not that easy for him when i see his faces while playing!!
means he's really human after all... but maybe a superior one!! :)
It's like a message. He's really saying something.
Stupendo che bello Bello uuh
I would've died by the 3rd Minute.
Unbelievable!
so sick
I just realized he was doing crazy shit with his right foot as well. I was so fixated on his hands I didn't even notice lol.
@Smackenzieth huge whoops man lol, search 'joey baron solo' and check out the first thing that comes up -- it'll blow your mind for sure
What a freaky ass solo! It doesn't really pick up until 0:58 when he swaps hand technique. It may be very technically impressive, but its not really interesting. Still gotta love that man!
........................wow...
Its very tribal sounding. I love it.
so THATS how god warms up
Is he using pushpull technique?
5:41 to 5:56 is absolute madness
if you're loving this, then you gotta get on to joey baron too
this would be kinda cool for like background music to a fight scene.
@Smackenzieth umm... baron, not jordison.
HOLY SHIT!!!

Yeah, I really like the "organic" approach to drums.
It's so... trancey (Trust me that's a word lol)
He's like his own marching band.
@PastyMook wow woops lol, idk why but anytime i see the name joey (the fac that everyone brings up that guy on every single drum video) joey jordison comes to mind
I would say my hands were cramping watching this, but actually they've committed suicide. Typing with my nose.
true
This is what the movie Akira dreams of growing up to be.
Turning in my sticks now
Holy God i mean damnnnnnnnnnnnnn JoJo lol
freaking amazing. try keeping that up for even 2 minutes, your arms would be fried.
This made me fucking cry. I like to consider myself a pretty good drummer, but this is WAY WAY WAY beyond even comprehension
Reminds me of kodo... haha.
reminds me of steve reich
yeah baby :D
at 3:58 is he hitting the other snare with the butt of his stick?
This must be improvised cuz he keeps going to do something with another hand and then going "hmm maybe not yet"
@MennyJenny I'm not a beginner, I've been playing 8 years and I know moeller technique, and it's still discouraging :(
Is he using the mayer stroke with his right hand?
@bengmansbeverfarm well this is implied...
that's gotta burn!
YeeHoo! :)
if you like to believe so, i won't fight against you!
Yes time for me to transcribe, hehe
5:44 - 6:00 oooooo boy
@lexusowner You play guitar don't you.
this should be an exercise called "How to get chops"
Danny Carey is pretty jacked and he's no slouch!
i just pooped a little
5:22 - 5:27 !!!
wow
I can do that for about 2 seconds!!!
I could do that, at least the first 40 seconds.
