Performance Spotlight: Jojo Mayer & Jack Quartet | Different Zones by Don Li

- Check out Vic Firth Signature Series Artist Jojo Mayer in this specially commissioned performance for himself and the Jack Quartet.
ABOUT THE PIECE:
DIFFERENT ZONES by DON LI for JOJO MAYER & JACK QUARTET
Commissioned by the Lucerne Festival 2019, Don Li’s composition is based
on a quote made by Jojo Mayer in a TH-cam interview: The drummer talks
about the relationship between repetition and groove and how their effect
induces a different state of mind (»different zones«). Rhythmical speech
pattern and melody of his quote form the basic template of the one hour-long
composition. Instead of exploring extravagant playing techniques for string
quartet, Don Li focuses on block chords: Dark, perpetual and driven by
hypnotic odd meters, they open the gateway to the »different zones«. This
visually striking synopsis of the work offers a glimpse at this extraordinary
collaboration.
Composition, Concept, Stage Design: Don Li
Drums, Voice: Jojo Mayer

Repetition is very important. Well that explains why I keep coming back to this video.
what tha heck, i love when an incredible tune shows up, it blows your mind and then end and you hear the clapping hands and go like.....
BRO, THAT WAS LIVE?!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?
In the good old days, we called that a recording session.
Exactly my thought!! Fkn amazing...
@@obijuan8466 Ok boomer, there's still incredibly talented musicians nowadays. In fact there is way more
Time signature changing on the fly, and going from odd to even to odd- MAN! But it's all planned out, and, all though you don't always hear it, there's a steady 1,2,1,2...click, click, click, click.... count going on the whole time so everyone is in synch, despite having the down beat on the up beat, then back on the down beat... this can only work with a dead-steady drummer, i.e., Jojo, who's like a machine. This is fascinating, and so inventive! I've only listened to it once, so now I'll have to listen to it a few times, because it's fascinating/strange- I LOVE it! This is MUSIC creation - you have to always look for a new and unique thing that nevertheless somehow makes sense. This one is like walking up a flight of stairs that have short rises, then a group of taller rises, then even taller rises, then back to short rises, then maybe really tall rises, next... - etc. SO cool!
I love Jojo, because he is not only virtuoso. he is also an artist. And that video if the proof.

That was like if a Gaspar Noe film was an 8 minute composition. My days
Totally agree, Maestro.
The perfect comment.....bravo on your wording friend....
geez...that ending melody would make a fantastic song in and of itself.
Everything about this performance video is unbelievably sick!
Reminds me of Meshuggah

This is one of the greatest things I've ever watched in my life
This is the most beautiful thing I found in the internet.
I didn’t even watch it yet but I already know I will like it.
Always impressed by Jojo musicality, he is the best
More musical than Vinnie Colaiuta or Virgil Donati? Better than Mark Guilliana or Tony Williams?
@@krioni86sa Not saying that, his technique is limitless, and he keeps straight to the point and highly musical.
@@krioni86sa let us not compare let us enjoy the creativity and yes it goes traces back to Tony
But Vinnie , Virgil and Mark would probably tell you that Jojo is in his own Class and is unique
@@ericwilhelm2941 He didn't tell me though. Willie Revillame will eat all of them.
A few centuries ago u would be 🔥 alive for such a beautiful peace of art.
Speechless at how awesome that was, my brain was on fire
Music from future!! Jojo is live legend
Loved every second of it! Pure art!
avant-garde for sure
Reminds me of Meshuggah
Genius. This made me cry.
Theres a video that has the same effect on myself. Check it out? Carolina crowns hornline "drops the hammer video"
@@OBEYxINSANITY HAHA, DCI has entered the chat.
@RichardChildsPhotog Then maybe you should check out Don Li's (with Jojo Mayer) latest work? Cosmotonics7x7!
What a presentation?!!! This piece rules!! A nod to Steve Reich's Different Trains?! I'd say so. This is easily my favorite thing on TH-cam. Almost none of my friends seem to like it which I always take as an sound endorsement for the real shit. I've been watching this repeatedly since it was first released. I would have loved to have been in attendance for this epic. Jojo Mayer is always so masterful and that Jack Quartet, totally crush it. Bravo!!!
This is such a beautiful piece of art 🙏
Jojo Mayer and Flying Lotus collab please!!!🔥🔥
That would be absolutely incredible
This rules. I used to play to Don Li on drums to clear my head. You have to lock in to the oddness of his arrangments and when you do it makes you feel wonderful.

So, the musicians on classical string instruments are all reading off iPads, and the reverse-engineering electronical music mastermind reads off paper. Nice plot twist :-D
Damn, didn't even think about it like that.
Obviously, he put the iPad on a Xerox to get the copy ;-)
@@starbeardiesyoung Easier to add notes and corrections/modifications on paper :P
They’re likely using iPads to avoid page turns too. 👍🏼
yea, really conceptual aha, and i think it's also very practical since the string quartet musicians probably have more music written in the pages than he does
Fantastic performance.... One of the grooviest things I've ever heard. Astounding drumming!

Jojo is like the genius scientist physicist mathematician of drumming! He's out of this solar system
Bravo-Bravísimo-Bravisísimo!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much Jojo for all your magic!!!! ✨🙏🏼✨
Absolutely magnificent
What a fantastic piece! It sounds wildly difficult on multiple levels. The combination of recorded voice discussing getting into a groove with the drummer and string quartet moving through different beat patterns and/or tempi (I couldn’t tell if it was metric modulation or actual changes in tempo) is really provocative and fun. The drummer is the embodiment of physical ease and cool. Very impressive! I loved the staging with the circular light configuration. It’s so smart of the person who filmed the performance to shoot from above as well as from the audience’s perspective!
Reminds me of Meshuggah
This is in every way, perfect.
Awesome. Pure art. Unbelieveable. Impressive.
