Time signature changing on the fly, and going from odd to even to odd- MAN! But it's all planned out, and, all though you don't always hear it, there's a steady 1,2,1,2...click, click, click, click.... count going on the whole time so everyone is in synch, despite having the down beat on the up beat, then back on the down beat... this can only work with a dead-steady drummer, i.e., Jojo, who's like a machine. This is fascinating, and so inventive! I've only listened to it once, so now I'll have to listen to it a few times, because it's fascinating/strange- I LOVE it! This is MUSIC creation - you have to always look for a new and unique thing that nevertheless somehow makes sense. This one is like walking up a flight of stairs that have short rises, then a group of taller rises, then even taller rises, then back to short rises, then maybe really tall rises, next... - etc. SO cool!
what tha heck, i love when an incredible tune shows up, it blows your mind and then end and you hear the clapping hands and go like..... BRO, THAT WAS LIVE?!?!?!?!?!??!!?!?
@@krioni86sa let us not compare let us enjoy the creativity and yes it goes traces back to Tony But Vinnie , Virgil and Mark would probably tell you that Jojo is in his own Class and is unique
What a fantastic piece! It sounds wildly difficult on multiple levels. The combination of recorded voice discussing getting into a groove with the drummer and string quartet moving through different beat patterns and/or tempi (I couldn’t tell if it was metric modulation or actual changes in tempo) is really provocative and fun. The drummer is the embodiment of physical ease and cool. Very impressive! I loved the staging with the circular light configuration. It’s so smart of the person who filmed the performance to shoot from above as well as from the audience’s perspective!
So, the musicians on classical string instruments are all reading off iPads, and the reverse-engineering electronical music mastermind reads off paper. Nice plot twist :-D
yea, really conceptual aha, and i think it's also very practical since the string quartet musicians probably have more music written in the pages than he does
This rules. I used to play to Don Li on drums to clear my head. You have to lock in to the oddness of his arrangments and when you do it makes you feel wonderful.
What a presentation?!!! This piece rules!! A nod to Steve Reich's Different Trains?! I'd say so. This is easily my favorite thing on TH-cam. Almost none of my friends seem to like it which I always take as an sound endorsement for the real shit. I've been watching this repeatedly since it was first released. I would have loved to have been in attendance for this epic. Jojo Mayer is always so masterful and that Jack Quartet, totally crush it. Bravo!!!
Someone mentioned King Crimson... in fact Jojo Mayer reminds me a lot of Bill Bruford. They have the same way of conceptualizing drums at a level of sophistication that is apart from the technique itself. Impressive! This stuff should be released in stereo at high resolution and without compressing the dynamic range.
Repetition is very important. Well that explains why I keep coming back to this video.

Bravo-Bravísimo-Bravisísimo!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much Jojo for all your magic!!!! ✨🙏🏼✨
Always impressed by Jojo musicality, he is the best
More musical than Vinnie Colaiuta or Virgil Donati? Better than Mark Guilliana or Tony Williams?
@@krioni86sa Not saying that, his technique is limitless, and he keeps straight to the point and highly musical.

Obviously, he put the iPad on a Xerox to get the copy ;-)
