Steve Marcus looks like the only one who actually enjoys watching Buddy solo. The rest of the band has that look on their face like "if I don't keep my eyes on Buddy he'll chew my ass out". What a great opportunity to sit that close to watch the greatest at work.

Did you all see his second little solo where he grabbed the left crash cymbal and choked it with lightening speed? UNBELIEVABLE!! About 20 years ago I started to incorporate that lick (grabbing the crash cymbal and choking it). Now, I start to crash the left crash cymbal with my left hand. Psst, I own a set of Buddy Rich #80N by Slingerland drums that I purchased at Drums Unlimited in Bethesda, Maryland. Yes, marine pearl, just like Buddy's. I love this set.
This is THE BEST! His tone and attack are warm and he plays off the natural reverb of the hall. His phrasing and musical direction are songlike like I've never heard Buddy play before. Buddy, even after his triple by-pass surgery got better and better and better! There are warmth, humor and musical direction in this performance like never before.
If you watch the yearly Buddy Rich tribute his daughter puts on, it’s amazing. The top drummers in the world perform with Buddy’s band. And as good as these guys are you can see they know they can’t hold a candle to Buddy, not even close. That’s not a slight to these guys, they are some of my favourite drummers, it’s just that Buddy was one of a kind.
You are so right about that. No matter where how or what he's playing, you can always hear that one of a kind signature "Buddy Rich" sound. Even when he did his little skit on "the Muppets" and was playing his way down the stairs on the banister, it still had the signature "Buddy Rich" all over it. Awesome performer. I am a 50 year old female from CA. who was brought up to appreciate music of all types. I could listen to him on the drums all day and not get tired of hearing him.
You know Buddy Rich when you hear him. He is amazing. God gave him a talent and thank God he was able to find it. He plays so effortlessly. I love the group he's playing with here. I have seen Steve Marcus (sax), in many other performances with him. He's awesome as well. Thanks for sharing this Uncle Jimmy. I enjoyed it.
Buddy is not only the king of snaredrum but also the absolute master of cymbals: listen from 16:30 to 17:45... what a beatiful sound , beautiful melody he's able to pull out from the instrument... It seems to me Buddy is the only drummer in the jazz history who played better and better as the years went by ... he plays better in the last decade of his life than in the fifties ot the seventies ... smooth sound, great class and stunning elegance ... he has everything a jazz drummer needs to have
I have been watching Buddy for 50 years and still he is the drum god,he is the best drummer in the world and put up a match against him.i cant keep up with him and I played since 1970 a true drum god I believe
he did the same for me i even got to him smoked reef with him everytime he came to ct. i even rode on lake coumponces roller coaster way out of season (the park was closed) but buddy made the grounds keeper turn it on he invited my brother and i to ride w him..i loved this guy i really did..still do man how i miss those electrfying concerts he played sometimes even the waiting was awesome all of the drummers in the state would turn out and discussions about buddy the drums things he played i mean the entire experience was so great id almost shake..i met him first time at toads place new haven ct i recorded the first part of the gig you can hear it on the mike james jazz web page listen to it (not the greatest recording quality but you'll get a great sense of the vibe thats was always in the air at any of his gigs..it was truly like some drug..you just couldnt get enough..id give anything to see it feel it just one more time..my god nobody ever replaced that luckily i knew that at the time..the drummers of today have failed me miserably sad to say

I have always considered the first movement to be some of the best big band jazz ever written. This is an excellent recording. I also like the fact that it includes the middle movement, which was passed over on both occasions when I gopt to hear the band live. I read that he often left that out in order to allow for the extended drum solo everyone wanted to hear. Same thing on the West Side Story piece. At any rate, I think it interesting that probably the two most popular pieces his band did were arranged by Bill Reddie. But I can find hardly anything about him on the internet. I know only that he was a Las Vegas music director and alter had a company researching the therapeutic value of music. Great music...every time. That's Rich!

Buddy was great Killer drumming. There was a cassette tape going around back in the day of him on a tour bus just ripping some poor horn player for not being up to snuff, man it was brutal. I'm guessing it's still out there for someone to look up.
Remarkably inventive how Marcus starts creating a blues feeling with a few simple notes around 7:48. He pulls the bass into responding to the feel at 8:14. Clever! This groove isn't normally a part of the Suite but who cares? Brilliant!
I always get a kick out of other drummers trying to explain what Mr Rich did, that is like trying to analyze Mozart or trying to explain magic, simply can not be done.
13:46 - The stare down begins. 14:15 - Interference from the cameraman. Buddy takes a timeout. 14:45 - Stare down resumes. 15:58 - Buddy turns up the heat. Trombonist is showing his weakness. 16:15 - Trombonist breaks. loses all respect. 16:38 - Buddy never breaks. 18:05 - Buddy is now messing with his defeated opponent, staring him into the ground. 18:44 - Buddy is so disappointed in his trombonist he turns away in disgust. 18:56 - Buddy takes out his anger on his crash cymbal.
@@buddyrichforever I've been a huge fan of BR since the release of Live in London in '71. I was lucky enough to see him in concert 5 times, and meet him once. He has no peers. But I think you took the comments way too seriously and too literally. Buddy had the reputation of being a taskmaster, even a dictatorial one, and Johnny and Mel and others joked about that. I think it was Johnny who would refer to him as "Mr. Warmth". And Buddy certainly didn't mind being known for that bad ass attitude - and he had a wonderful sense of humor about it. He probably would have been mortified if all his good deeds, generosity and compassion from behind the scenes were known to the public. But he could be a very intimidating presence to us mere mortals.
I don't get it. Did you talk to someone in the band with this info. ? I've seen Buddy Rich so many times that I can't say and every time the members of the band stared at him while he soloed. What were the signs of his disappointment with the bone player ? I might be missing them or too busy checking out the musicianship.

I love watching the 86 show and seeing so many of the people I marched with in 84 getting the ring that eluded us that year. Out of all the solo or featured players, I think there was only one who was not from the 84 corps.

Buddy Rich, who I worshipped, dissed my favourite pop drummers, Keith Moon, Ringo, Kenney Jones, mainly by slating "MATCH GRIP" - YET....here he is in the first few bars of this amazing piece.....using fuckin' match grip!!! WTF?????
Stewart Nicol There’s a video that states the few occasions he will use the matched grip. He plays the floor tom like it’s a timpani which is definitely played with matched grip so that’s what he does. He also plays the hi-hat with matched since it’s awkward with traditional.

The bands faces during Buddy's solo tell a lot...sheer awe and fear. It's almost as if they'd get fired if their eyes weren't glued to him during the solos.
This is a really great piece of music, but it's one of those that seemingly can never reach its first incarnation, from the Mercy, Mercy Album, primarily because the first incarnation included Don Menza. Tough to equal that. Impossible to top it.
Don Menza's solo and sound on the album version is one of the best big band sax performances I ever heard. It is magical. But Steve Marcus is a great player also.

A lot of people overlook it but, Steve Marcus played an AMAZING solo.
Marcus was always a monster with fabulous Link tone...but this chart will always be known as much for the 'Menza Cadenza' as anything else. RIP Steve.

amazing playing... just goes to show that a 4 piece set, ride, few crashes is all he needed. 2nd floor tom usually held his towel.
