I read his book and in one of the stories he mention the incident with the "Late Great Tim Horton" who was playing for the Buffalo Sabers at that time.Tim was one of the beat defence men in the League and was one of the strongest player. Dave made the mistake of wanting to fight Tim cause Tim just put him in a bear hug and slammed him to the ice.Tim could have done Dave right in, but he was not a dirty player and let Dave stand up.After that, Dave had so much respect for Tim. The book was awesome with many different incidents. I have a lot of respect for Dave and I am very happy he got his life turned around.Wayne from Ontario Canada.

It makes me sick that so many people think of Dave as nothing but a goon, but he was a 20 goal scorer as well. That era had many tough players and fighting was a part of the game. The Flyers could play the game and also could scrap with the best of them
That was a great time when the Flyers won the two cups with the Hammer, Moose and the hound. Anti flyer fans seem to forget that the Flyers were bullied and beat up by the Blues. Also, the Bruins seem to invent the 3rd man in. Schultz scored 20 goals in 1973-74 yet Blackhawks coach Billy Reay called him Schwartz. Very Nice guy off the ice, his battles with Terry O'Reilly were great. I believe the best fighter at that time Were Clark Gillies and Larry Robinson. Side note I believe the best Flyers fighter of all time was Behn Wilson! He had that crazy look in his eyes and those rapid punches, dam!!
@@JohnWebb714 as you got me thinking about the bruins. The 69 blues would not intimidate the bruins at all . The 69 bruins had Sanderson, Sather, Shack, green, MacKenzie, Cashman, awrey, Bailey, and Rick Smith.
Dave Schultz's "fear" factor took a beating - as did he - when Clark Gillies pummeled him in the playoffs in 1975. And then Larry Robinson beat him up. Two real HOF players. Schultz and the Flyers were never really feared after that.
@@edl5553 Clark Gillies lost one closely and badly beat one to Behn Wilson. How is a clear win in Chicago by Gillies afraid to fight? Behn Wilson got his ass kicked by Nick Fotiu and then twice allowed Nick in the 1979 and 1982 playoffs get right into Wilson's face and he took it and did squat! Behn Wilson avoided Nick Fotiu after their fight in April of 1979!
@jacksmith5692 gillies got tko'd by Wilson In the 1st fight, bad beating. and dropped with a straight right in the 2nd, the punch that ended the fight. What fights were you watching???
Larry Robinson's bodycheck on Dornhoefer was the beginning of the end for Schultz's Broad street bullies. Robinson finished the job by knocking out Schultz later. After Robinson's warning, he was never the same again.
When Clark "Jethro" Gillies, RIP, opened a can of whip ass on Schultz, and Larry Robinson did it a year later, IT WAS SWEET JUSTICE. I'm glad Schultz got clean
I disliked Dave and his bullies in the mid seventies then I watch the Flyers play against Soviet Russia in '76 and I rooted so hard for them to win. Typical fan I was!!!
One of my all time hockey memories is watching the Flyers chase those chicken S**t russians from the ice in 76. #1 fave is the 72 series. Trivia question, name the last NHL team to win the Cup with all Canadian players.
Schultz would have also been a superb good Goal Scorer if his NHL Career wasn't being made into an Enforcer. If there was one Player I would have liked to have played on Team Canada in the 1976 Canada Cup that never played on the Team it is Dave Schultz. Rarely I state that with Enforcers especially in an International Series facing the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Finland and the United States.
See if you can get Barry Beck. His book is coming? I think. Missed the story on his son. THN did excerpt on the book but can't find one lick on where this is in publishing circles. His facebook shows a book jacket but can find nothing else. His is right in the shank of your hockey era for shows.
Schultz replaced the rush of playing with a bottle its very common with retired athletes That feeling in front of crowd all those years to like nothing must've been strange
I'm sure that Schultz has been a gentleman in his post pro-hockey days, but during the time he played for the Flyers, he was called a goon because the only reason he was able to make the team in Philly was to act goony, and he did it with great fervor.
The guy known for jumping non fighters like Rick Middleton and Dale Rolfe and afraid to fight Nick Fotiu. As a Penguin at the Garden I watched Fotiu all game try to fight Schultz who ran away. What a spot picker!
In early February of 1975 he was kicked out of a Ranger vs Flyers game after doing nothing with John Bednarski and later Ted Irvine. It was the game when Bert Wilson bloodied Ted Harris badly! In the press box as Wilson destroyed Harris, Bill Chadwick was whooping it up and next door was Schultz having dressed after his ejection. On the air on WOR Channel 9 we all heard Schultz and Chadwick going at it verbally. Chadwick the HOF referee and Schultz the guy Scotty Bowman had no use for sending his ass to Rochester! Amazing how Bowman had no use for Probert and Schultz but lots of use for Joey Kocur on the great Grind Line as they won 2 Cups! Dave Schultz caveman act ruined hockey! He didn't just fight and go to the box. He went on and on for 10 minutes acting like an idiot bringing bad media to the sport! Dave Schultz hurt hockey with his selfish act!
@@robertlee4172 I seen it live on TV in 1974, I was 21 years old at the time. Before this fight I never seen Schultz scared ever. When Robinson grabbed him and started hammering him with his right meat hook, I saw fear and terror in Schultz eyes and body expressions. That was my opinion then and now 50 years later.
@@garrypalahitski3194 What makes Schulz even more despicable, was his hair pulling and head butts. Why the NHL didn't put a stop to this is inexcusable. Run by Ziegler and Eagleson, they let this brutality continue throughout the 70s.
Selective amnesia, Mr Schultz. Review the tape of the “ fight “ you had with Dale Rolfe. A good player but not a fighter. You picked a fight with him for no discernible reason and beat a non fighter to a bloody pulp. You were a bully- and a very willing combatant- and more often than not- the instigator. As you said in this interview “ I wanted to fight the smaller guys, but O’Reilly kept jumping in.” Philly had real talent but you can never beat the widespread perception that the team won primarily by bullying and fighting more skilled teams. As you aged perhaps you developed a guilty conscience of some limited sort, but every fan back then believed you loved bullying and beating down others. Tell the whole truth, dude.
There are certain fans i bet you can tell which group pumps test. When you understand fighting was canadian culture. I grew up in bracebridge ont when i was young. Everything was fighting. School lunches we fought in a ring in a clearing where bush was our backyard. My point is in bracebridge in 70ts fighting was big deal.
In his book he said he was afraid of fotiu then why fight guys like dale Rolf brad park potvin guys who were hockey players fighters fight fighters that’s just a rule then why duck fotiu
Soon as the days get longer the nhl morphs into a game of intimidation again every year. Not as bad as it once was but make no mistake your gonna have to fight for it
Many of the enforcers in hockey are the humblest nicest guys you could meet, they had a job and they did it well
Agreed..!!

lol, gillies and Robinson were both scared to death of Big Behn Wilson.
He beat gillies in there first fight
What's funny is..he ran the skatium in havertown PA..I'm 6'1 220..towered over Dave..I wanted to throw w him😂
I disliked Dave and his bullies in the mid seventies then I watch the Flyers play against Soviet Russia in '76 and I rooted so hard for them to win. Typical fan I was!!!
That’s why he was tough, focus on farm work instead of watching TikTok
Yes , thank you
One of my all time hockey memories is watching the Flyers chase those chicken S**t russians from the ice in 76.
Good suggestion - thank you!
Schultz replaced the rush of playing with a bottle its very common with retired athletes
That feeling in front of crowd all those years to like nothing must've been strange
Ken Houston of the Atlanta Flames broke Dave Shultz's jaw , dave was almost crying after that happened .....
Hahahaaa, but yeah, you're wrong again.
As a kid I hated Dave Shultz but you have to love him
Shultz said in his book the only guy he afraid to fight was Tough Nick Fotiu , he was right Nick would of clearly won..fact
hair puller extraordinaire
Loved the hammer.
Dave schultz, what did you think of nick fotiu.
He should have made every ranger fan happy and fought fotiu
I can tell you every stat there is for Dave Schultz
Congrats Shultzy on your sobriety .. We re neighbors kind of and I’m a addiction counselor
Schultz was always a goon, even fighting small guys for no reason. His day of reckoning came when Larry Robinson punched him out.
Yup. That's the way I saw it, too.
There are YT clips of Robinson yelling at Schultz across the ice. Schultz kept skating away.

What makes Schulz even more despicable, was his hair pulling and head butts. Why the NHL didn't put a stop to this is inexcusable.
Run by Ziegler and Eagleson, they let this brutality continue throughout the 70s.
Dave the "hammer" 😂😂😂
32:30 "engineer"...crushing calculators and slide rules across canada!
Wasn't happy when Schultz was traded.
Dave do you wake up in the morning after a nightmare thinking about Larry Robinson.
Did he win his claim against Larry Robinson for embarrassing him all those years ago ? 🤣🤣
In his book he said he was afraid of fotiu then why fight guys like dale Rolf brad park potvin guys who were hockey players fighters fight fighters that’s just a rule then why duck fotiu
interesting he never fought as a junior. i would think someone would take a run at the big kid.
Soon as the days get longer the nhl morphs into a game of intimidation again every year. Not as bad as it once was but make no mistake your gonna have to fight for it
