    Puerto Rican Rice Recipe:
    - Warm pot (use a low flame)
    - Add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pot (about 6 tbsp)
    - 1/2 - 3/4 can of gandules (drain liquid first)
    - 12 - 14 olives (Alcaparrado Manzanilla Olives)
    - 2 tbsp Sofrito
    - 1 packet of Sazón ( con Culantro y Achiote)
    - 1 1/2 tbsp salt
    - 8 ounce can of tomato sauce
    - 4 cups of water
    - Turn up flame to high
    - Add 4 cups of white rice
    - Once it starts to boil, stir every couple of minutes so rice doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pot. After the rice has soaked up all the ingredients, lower flame, cover the pot and let it cook for 55 minutes. feeds approx. 6 people
    - *Optional: Add Salchichón (farmer sausage) cut in small pieces after adding oil to pot.

My best friend is Puerto Rican/Dominican and she makes the best food, oh my Lord 🙌
I'm Mexican and we swap our families recipes to eachother, which is an honor in my opinion, and fell in love with Puerto Rican food. Yes, Lord 🙌 she made me chuletas with arroz con gandules and I praised her cooking for days. I'm blessed having her as my friend ❤

For those that are on a no sodium count you can add pink Himalayan salt it’s not salty and they also have a no salt added Sazon con culantro y achiote I use this and love it less salt/ sodium content. That’s how my Grandma Pepita cooked it. She boiled the chicken first, deboned it, used the broth in place of hot tap water. I also seem to recall she added saffron which might already be included in that seasoning packet. I think she also used a small can of tomato paste in place of the tomato sauce. I believe a whole jar of olives (I prefer slicing mine first) along with diced onion are also added to the pot. 🫒

Yea, I use jamoncito too, as I know the one you use platano rallado y hoja is the one they call apastelado. Me has dado idea. I am going to try that with jamoncito tomorrow for Christmas Eve. I have leaves left from a hallacas recipe a friend did on my you tube channel. A question, could it be green banano (guineo verde) instead of plantain (plátano), I dont have plantain right now.

Great recipe... It is very similar to mine, except that I add chopped bacon or ham, whatever I have on hand. I also add two cans of gandules (without draining the water). And I use 3 cups of rice to 2 cups of water. But I do think that the rice to gandules ratio is pretty nice. There is no right way or wrong way, it's all Boricua! I'm actually making some right now!
However, if you really want to add a nice kick of flavor, add a cup of shrimp! I do that once in a while when I'm in the mood for paella but don't want to go through all that work! 😉

This came out very close to mi Abuela's. I added diced ham first and fried it up. Then, added half a large onion diced and 3 cloves garlic before adding the rest of the ingredients. I then modified the amount of salt to only 1 tbsp. and found that to be perfect. I also drained and rinsed my gandules and added 1 full can. I always wash my rice and so I did that before adding it. I used olive oil instead of canola. For variety, you could add Vienna sausage, pork or Hispanic salami instead of the ham. I made homemade corned beef and potatoe empanadillas as a side dish to the rice. Felt like when I was a kid!

You gotta add a couple olives at least for flavor. Ypu can pick them out but they add a flavor that is necessary. Imo
