I personally experienced the phenomenon of "No-Show Jones" in 1979, at the age of six. The Oak Ridge Boys--riding high at the time--had already performed, and George Jones was scheduled to close out the night. At least an hour went by (which seems like an eternity when you're a kid), and you could hear people starting to get restless. Finally the door at stage left swung open (my mom pointed and said, "Look, you can see the tour bus parked out there") and a guy came through it, stepping up to the mic. "I'm sorry, folks," he said, "but George is not gonna be able to play tonight." The auditorium erupted in jeers. There was an old woman sitting behind us who had been hollering for George Jones all night, and at this point she was actually wailing in horrified disbelief; I can remember looking over my shoulder and seeing the wad of tape that held her glasses together. I kept asking my mom, "So he's out there on the bus? Why can't he play?" I didn't get it.
This was at the Coliseum in Florence, Alabama. I vividly recall the incident, but have no memory of the date.

My stepfather (RIP) was from Murfreesboro, and used to be a professional photographer back in the '70s and '80s. He photographed musicians like Elvis, Jerry Reed, Hank Jr., Willie Nelson, and Waylon on tour. He also used to run a restaurant in downtown Nashville. He and Waylon were friends, and he even videotaped one of Shooter's childhood birthday parties. He had so many Waylon stories, and always said Waylon had a heart of gold, and would be there for reckless artists like Hank Jr. and David Allan Coe. He was on Waylon's tour bus one of the times Waylon decided to get clean and flushed thousands of dollars of coke down the bus toilet. I wish he was still alive so I could ask him about this video.
Just for giggles, he also had a story about Ronnie Millsap driving a semi truck through downtown Nashville, while another guy gave him directions from the passenger seat, lol.

Back in the day, that being the 60s & 70s, living in the northern mining town called Uranium city Sask Canada, Waylon Jennings was on just about every turntable, 8 track tape and cassette tape recorder in town.
And every juke-box was loaded with his records.
I even remember one of my country gospel singing friends... started his career playing Waylon's outlaw tunes... hell we were just 13 yrs old , but we were invited to alot of parties. The rowdy ole sounds ofl lukenbach Texas, Tulsa time and the good hearted woman was what all the hardworking miners enjoyed hearing.

It sounds funny, and probably was in hindsight, but much of Jones’ life was sad. The entire prime of his life he could barely remember, or enjoy because of his addictions. He lived with much regret but was very honest in his autobiography. I am glad he did not die young, like so many do, and he finally got himself straightened out. God bless him and Waylon. Two of the greatest ever.

Saturday night we will be putting on a show at ( name of nightclub) Y'all come see us. I think most people have had the experience of trying to "babysit" a drunk friend, and then having them become belligerent, combative, mean, and hurtful. It REALLY tests your patience, and the degree of your friendship. But I have to add this thought. This scenario is precisely how so many unfortunate, unintentional murders happen. When people get this "messed up" even best friends can kill each other and later, not even recall it. Happens every single day. It's likely that more than one guardian angel was at work during this one. Thank goodness.

I had that privilege and watched a friend of mine go from my best friend to wanting to beat my ass and about a second and it all started with a shot of whiskey after he had been drinking beer all day. Some people just can't do whiskey and he was one of them. Thank God the outcome was the same for us and he is still someone I admire. The fact that he can imitate George Jones so well, is only fitting for the tale.

However, I think the book could have been twice as long, I bet there were lots more stories about himself and other country stars that could have been included.

  • @annalbin
    @annalbin ปีที่แล้ว +18

Shooter Jennings recounted this incident (but not in such detail) on “Tales from the Tour Bus”. If you haven’t seen that series, track it down. Season 1 covered several country stars. But George was really crazy and unpredictable when drunk and/or coked up. Well, maybe predictably violent would be more like it. George Jones makes Keith Richards look like a choir boy. But based on George’s autobiography, he could somehow perform while stoned out of his mind. I have to admit I enjoy his live performances cause he’s so loose with his voice. Maybe his notes weren’t as perfect, but he was rocking that voice.

    • @johndeere8594

Yes do look these up. George was nuts. I love the stories of George buying trucks because he’s bored. You think Elvis bought a lot of cars,George did to. They said he would get drunk and tired of being on tour and he would take some money and walk to a car dealership and buy a brand new truck and disappear for a few days and show back up without it.And couldn’t tell you what happened to it.

Both George Jones and Waylon Jennings had a wild life in their adult years as they were famous Country Music singers. But when George Jones quit drinking, shortly after he gave his heart over to Jesus. He finally became a changed man living for God. I believe he's in Heaven singing to every Angels there is including to those that was born before 1900 on down and they thinking music has never been so fine and great than it was when they were living on earth long before George Jones ever came along.

People quit drinking at different stages of their life. Marty, who by his own admission was a bad drunk. gave up drinking after a life altering event. So Marty gave up drinking early in his life. I think Marty knew he owed it to his family and his fellow Navy soldiers to get off the booze. For Johnny, it took much longer than it did with his good friend Marty to get off the booze and drugs. Mari came close to leaving Marty, I think he wrote a song about it.

This is just a story of 2 good friends. They made up the next day of course because Waylon knew exactly what George was going through because he had been there before himself maybe not to that degree but he knew what it was to act out of character. To be able to show a friend understanding and love during a time like that is true friendship. It's what makes two men brothers.

My Grandpa was on the same base as Possum for awhile. He said George was a downright nasty drunk. He took a cheap shot at my Gramps at a base dance one night which resulted in my Gramps and his Navy buddies jumping George after a local show of his at the Bon-Ton Room. Years later my Gramps was on a layover from a sortie and heard George was playing. He went to the show and hollered to George, “Do you remember the Bon-Ton Room, you SOB?” George stopped, looked up at my Gramps then gave him a nod and a simple salute. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were hundreds of similar stories out there. 🤠

Cheers to both Icons, as I take a drink listening to the great country music.... Country music had gone down hill... Same as rock... I miss old music.... God bless all the Icons..... Today music let's ad pop and rock to country music killed the true country... Today country isn't country... You can disagree.... Example Dolly Parton vs Taylor swift.... Dolly. Wins..... Conway Twitty vs any 2000 and up new singer... Conway wins.... 80-90' rock bands be 20 times richer then if they came out since 2000... Not because of inflation... Because of popularity of music... Their was so many one hit band songs in 80 and 90s and many many major bands
