When I was a kid, I would pore over Hammerli products in catalogs, especially the pistols - they seemed so exotic. But then, as now, they were at untouchable nosebleed prices. The AR20 is an entry rifle. Wow. Classical position target shooting is like auto racing - the only substitute for cubic inches (or cc's) is cubic money. And it is truly an athletic endeavor. Andy, thanks for straying from your comfort zone - a very interesting video on a fascinating rifle!
An alternative that will suit many sizes of prospective shooters is the Air Arms T200 (not to be confused with the TX . This T stands for target) It's a very nice rifle, made in the Czech Republic and has the CZ barrel fitted. . .It's about half the price of the Hammerli too.
I have the full power CR20 and it’s fantastic. Very accurate, incredible trigger, crazy accurate for a Co2 88g powered unit and feeds anything you can put in the tray. All for a bargain second hand.
Andy, great rifle and great shots from you too, I can say with every confidence, the more you shot with the AR20 the better you would be able to shoot 10’s in the standing. Just a few adjustments on the sights and you would be so much happier in yourself. Another great show thank you.
Retails for $1.220 here in the USA, seems expensive but considering the Anschutz rifles go from $2.800 to $4.800, it's very reasonably priced. Nice shooting Andy, especially the offhand considering it's not your usual thing. 😁👍
This is the air rifle that got me into pcp and gave the kick to my air gun passion, back in years, and bolt action rifle shooting passion then. How many feeling.
Excellent review. The only comment I make (respectfully) is to control your breathing. If you were holding your breath, this may have impacted on your consistently accurate shooting. Lastly: Walther: If they are good enough for Mr Bond. . . .
I have had the AR20 FT for about 12 yrs. Great rifle. The only problem is that in the threaded hole of the air cylinder there is an O ring. These harden & leak. NO ONE can say where to get a spare. Maybe with your contacts you can find a source.
11:19 -- These are not bad for off hand it stayed relatively consistent. Bravo Andy! Yup more practice you will get close to matching your rested shots for sure. Well done man. 😲👍
Had the Hämmerli AR10 for a long time. Basically the more expensive/high end Version of this gun. It was extremely precise and light enough to allow you to add a lot of extra weight exactly where you need it. Which sounds stupid, but is common in the sport.
I've owned the CR20 for quite a few years now, it comes in all black, has the giant muzzle brake and a rail system instead of the dioptre sights so better for benchrest shooting, it also comes with quite a few stock adaptors as well as weights and is brilliant for me as I'm a lefthanded shooter. The C is for CO2 (takes the large CO2 bottles in place of the PCP tank) and I really want to convert it to PCP but Hammerli haven't been very helpful. Mine is also branded under Umarex who bought Walther when the firearms company was going broke and saved it with the Walther P99 and giving the prototype to Pierce Brosnan on set for James Bond asking him to recommend it as Bond's new pistol, which he did.
Don't knock yourself. Stance not bad and results not bad either. It''s great that there is something cheaper to get folk started in a very expensive part of the sport, but it's still too expensive. Of course quality usually is and I was tempted myself until you said the price. No doubt though there will be noises turned up from some folk in the discipline as it doesn't say Anschutz on the side, but if British Shooting is ever going to grow any and become more authorative in regards having a say that makes sporting organisations and the government sit up and take note, it needs more folk shooting in all kinds of disciplines. Such rifles as this helps no end, but the price still has to come down to get folk through the shooting door. Nice to see a video with something very different.
I agree, in these times where Theresa May's money tree has been chopped down , luxury items in excess of £1000 is way beyond the normal family person. If a manufacturer came up with a well priced version I'm sure they will sell very well.
@@kelvinsparks4651 it's £850 (converted) here. Manufacturers can't be blamed the majority of british decided they wanted to pay more for imports some years ago.
Hi Andy, Good shooting there. If you look at your off hand to where it was zeroed you were not far off. You can fit a scope to them as I had a scope on mine for 3 positional shooting. You can buy 2 different size regulators to increase the power up to 12ft/lb, but they were not cheap here in Australia.
Its normal practise to have your free hand rested ie in a pocket or tucked in your belt when shooting pistol. I would say your results were very good as standing 10 mtr rifle is extremely challenging so well done.
As long as I could have it in some colour less......intense than that blue.... In fairness, one hand in the pocket is pretty much the accepted style for target pistol. You are not allowed to use your "weak" hand for any kind of support, and you need to be relaxed, so sticking it in your pocket is the best answer. I have a Steyr LG110, which I use with a scope, and it is a fantastically accurate rifle. I have wondered how good it would be with target sights, but i don't have the money to find out at the moment.
Andy... the secret with offhand shooting is to accept that you cannot hold the rifle still.... no one can... you have a lovely light trigger, so start below aim point and float the rifle up on target, breaking the trigger as you pass point of aim. Humans cannot be still but we are very good at precise movement, so use that natural talent to hit where you want. Hunters use the same technique for offhand shots in the field....
I remember many years ago using the rifle club .22 rim fire target rifles that used diopter sights, that was in the days before I needed glasses and we shot from a prone position. Good fun but my varifocal glasses make using most iron sights very difficult these days, the only ones I can manage are the fibre optic ones like the ones on my HW45 where I can at least line up the glowing blurry coloured dots 😁
Nice review as usual and looks like a very consistent gun, no surprise there. Well done for the freehand stuff, its not your usual method of shooting, not bad for someone who has rubbish eyes, like me!
got the same gun but in the ft variant it does 120 shots at 200 bar all at 11.2/11.4 foot pounds didnt have diopters but a riser rail for scope mounts , must be 15 years old now [ i think they also did a 20 foot lbs version for the US the only difference on the guns was size and pressure of the regulator]
Note I suffer from Parkinson's Disease and like other people who suffer from the body inflicting it on us (adult or child) e.g. Cancer ,MS ,Alzheimer’s ,Huntingtons ,Cerebral palsy think it's a easy put down. I get the humour and I'm not hurt by the joke and I see line of entertainment but Andy just consider how it's expressed. May I ask aim jokes more at those of self inflicted, a person who's drank 10 red bull or cups of coffee and now on a come down (shakes etc) ,10 pints of lager or over indulged in their fav past time. Banter is good but try not to take it out of those who had no choice. With that I enjoy your channel and have purchased a few rifles and accessories based on your and others reviews . Not a pistol fan but do watch every review. Keep them coming 👍
very interesting that entry-level olympic air rifles are starting to pop out... that means the demand has risen so hight that the offer of older second-hand rifles for entry-level shooters no longer suffices. that's excellent news for the growth of the sport.
Im in love with the gun …. I do bell target ….. problem is pcp’s are banned and have to use open sights …. Oh and at 6 foot pound it wouldnt ring the bell ….. but i want one
It's pronounced "Hammerlee" :) 13:14 "So chill, he had one hand in his pocket" Well, tbf, this is the standard shooting position for 10m air pistol. You either have the hand at the hip, the belt or the pocket, and 90% of 10m pistoleros chose the pocket.
At a 1/3 of the cost of an LG400, I'm also wondering how this rifle would compare if cranked up to 11.5 foot pound and a scope fitted. Not sure how suited it would be for HFT in a prone position with that hand grip. But it would be interesting if shortened to suit and running just under 12 ft/lbs.
WOW the accuracy is nuts and not even using a scope. Price is ok as well considering that my 7,5J "F" FX can do that es well but costs a bit more and is not designed to take a diopter
They do a FT version and I am sure that is a standard 11mm dovetail. I have an old Anschutz 22lr target rifle with a high magnification scope on it, as my Benchrest rifle.
Hi Andy, I just found your channel this week and have enjoyed watching your shows. I have watched quite a few of them now and I notice something that keeps coming up that I don't understand. Please can you explain why/how rifles/pistols are more accurate when using a single shot pellet tray than when using a magazine? I am not saying you're wrong at all, nor doubting you, but I'd like to learn the reasoning behind this please. As an aside, my wife is upset with you (and now me too) because you are the reason I bought a Remington Pest Controller, A Glock 19 gen 4 MOS and visited Vector Air for a T-Rex (I will also blame you for any future air gun/rifle purchases). Kind Regards Carl
yes I’m told that I am responsible for many things, including the Boer war, the bad moods of Genghis Khan and fall of the Roman Empire, along with Air gun purchases of course… the single shot tray point is that some magazines can very slightly deform a pellet in action, hence the puritans prefer to use their phalanges to remove this potential issue. Stay safe and love to the Mrs…Andy
Wow the low end 10m olympic air rifle. Is it a beginning of a series and we will see fwb, Steyr, Walther, tesro, pardini and anschütz? The thing is that within 10m Air rifle it is a baseline but outside of it, it is a bit overprised piece.
It is the cheap line of Walther, and the Hämmerlis have been around as cheap "loan units" for guests and beginners at gun clubs for quite a while. If it were a market, the other manufacturers would have followed along long time ago, I guess. Many people that decide to get into the sport just ignore the Hämmerli and go for the entry level "real" Walther or Feinwerkbau albeit the premium for these (€1500-1600 for a entry level LG400 or FWB500 instead of €1000-€1100 for the AR20Pro). I guess to make tha Hämmerli really attractive for beginner shooters, it would have to be something around €700-€800. I wozuld buy one just because I think it looks cute 😄
@ssm445 similar situation in Germany. It is also quite popular price on minor turnaments. But yep Walther lg400 or fw500 are a lot better (und sie wurden in Deutschland hergestellt).
If you intend to erase yourself from the equation, lock the gun in a fixed stand. My Feinwerkbau LP100 pistol does deliver 10 shot, 4,5 hole at 10 meters.... if locked... A locked stand would be much more for the precision and the outcome of any test....
That’s a nice rifle! However, I wanted to point out that the gear on OI doesn’t necessarily provide any real advantage. For example, the anti-glare lens helps with visibility but isn’t auto-aim or AI assistance. Similarly, ear protection doesn’t improve your shooting skills-it just protects your hearing. What truly matters is having a steady hand, sharp eyesight, and proper trigger discipline. As you mentioned yourself, your hand isn’t always steady, and glasses might slightly affect sharpness (though they help overall). It’s about building those core skills. In fact, sometimes too much reliance on gear can even hinder progress. Without stamina and steadiness, the results might not improve as much, even with the best equipment. Focus on the fundamentals, and I’m sure you’ll see better results!
Errrr... nothing wrong with your shooting there.....not a perfect bullseye, but every shot consistently placed. A bit of tinkering with the sights and an afternoons practice, and I reckon you would be spot on every shot.
You're being too hard on yourself. If the five shots had been on a single target they'd have been pretty much covered by the fingernail of your little finger... And for something you aren't even familiar with, not really bad at all.
When I was a kid, I would pore over Hammerli products in catalogs, especially the pistols - they seemed so exotic. But then, as now, they were at untouchable nosebleed prices. I know you could outshoot me cause I'm old and shake like a politician in church, but when I was young I could stack em. Love your show, big thanks

Great to see a different type of rifle being reviewed 👍
And not a bad attempt for someone who doesn't shoot these
Excellent review.
What a lovely looking rifle. Olympics here I come!
11:19 -- These are not bad for off hand it stayed relatively consistent. Bravo Andy! Yup more practice you will get close to matching your rested shots for sure. Well done man. 😲👍
Brilliant effort Andy! Hats off matey!

Great review as always Andy .You always manage to bring something new to the table that's interesting and educational.
Absolutely no problem at all. Thank you for showing us a carl Walter rifle.😁

It’s very accurate but it’s a bit of a weight to lug around. I had a scope on mine for FT and it was a good workout!
Nice, now to watch the latest episode of 'The Day of the Jackal'. 😄
Yes, but even Andy couldn't look as cool as Edward Fox in a cravat..sorry Andy!

Looked like a nice gun, and both target cards looked like if you were soothing in groups they would have been close to pellet on pellet.

As you say. It's not easy but really really great fun
Morning from Maryland
Well done! You gave every excuse possible. But well done!
Great Review Andy
Not bad shooting for someone who doesn't do target shooting and it's a great looking rifle as wel, wil we now see andy venturing into target shooting?
If you can remove the cylinder for filling can you use an 88g co2 instead?
It's pronounced "Hammerlee" :)
13:14 "So chill, he had one hand in his pocket"
Well, tbf, this is the standard shooting position for 10m air pistol. You either have the hand at the hip, the belt or the pocket, and 90% of 10m pistoleros chose the pocket.
Same in Black Powder shooting. It was the traditional way to shoot, double handed is a new invention.
I had a pistol instructor who chose to show his dominance by holding an ice cream in his off hand. Irksome chap! 😉
Correct. You gotta put it somewhere, and the pocket is steady, repeatable and consistent, which is the main idea. Chill helps, too, though.
Purchasing a HW100 can you recommend a top end scope for target shooting new to the sport.
Regards
Paul.
What a pretty cricket bat 🏏
Would it shoot at 20 - 25 yards
What’s up with all this blue even though blue is my fave color 😂
If you liked the Hammerli try the Crosman Challenger
When you are shooting at 10M - is the distance measured from the end of the barrel or some point on your body? Thanks!
Leading foot has to be behind a 10m line to the face of the target.
Could be suited to other disciplines if the power can be adjusted to 12ftlb
At a 1/3 of the cost of an LG400, I'm also wondering how this rifle would compare if cranked up to 11.5 foot pound and a scope fitted. Not sure how suited it would be for HFT in a prone position with that hand grip. But it would be interesting if shortened to suit and running just under 12 ft/lbs.
I shoot the fienwerkbau 800x and now you can understand the skill needed to make use of the body as well as the gun to shoot straight
Cool 👍
WOW the accuracy is nuts and not even using a scope. Price is ok as well considering that my 7,5J "F" FX can do that es well but costs a bit more and is not designed to take a diopter
Didn't seem too bad for your first try , as they say practice makes perfect 😊 . Time to try a new discipline I reckon .
Nice review but what about a review of some of the budget target rifles on the market.
10m Platform Diving next week 🤔😁
I sure wish that we could see what it can do with a scope.
I struggle to see how it can be more accurate than my hw100
I had one in FT it was called AR20FT they don't make them any more which is a pity it was full powered for uk
I was really excited at the first half of your post. 😀😮🤦♂️
Will it take a scope and would it make a Benchrest rifle?.
They do a FT version and I am sure that is a standard 11mm dovetail. I have an old Anschutz 22lr target rifle with a high magnification scope on it, as my Benchrest rifle.
Nice.

Try looking up bell target😂
Standing the target needs to be 1.4m height.
The obligatory "What's that rifle in the background, please?" comment.
If that had a mode lever to switch between 6 and 12 🦶⚖️ I'd be having a conversation with my bank account.
Wow, under 20 mins

Thought you was going to say you was shaking like a canine emptying its bowels

Take no notice. You will always get the gobshites trying to knock you or the rifle

So Smurfette DOES spit !
No good, troublesome, just one pellets at a time. Not powerful rifle.
You're being too hard on yourself. If the five shots had been on a single target they'd have been pretty much covered by the fingernail of your little finger... And for something you aren't even familiar with, not really bad at all.
It looks like an orthopedic walking stick designed by Damien Hurst.
Ah this guy must be the James May Of the gun world?
Ya shoot like an old unfit woman 😂😂😂
It is [ˈhɛ-mɛr-li] - with the "li" sounds like "lee" at the end. ;)
