This 64 bit server news is great! I'm hoping it'll eventually be similar to what ESO does with megaserver tech, where the players only see a login screen then zone into the game and everyone from all servers are there to play with. Imagine being able to play on a less laggy, better performance server system AND you get to play with the entire DDO community. We'll have to wait and see, but this tech isn't new. ESO has been doing this for over 10 years now. I'm also excited to see how this HC-style event will shape up. I hope they thought it all through and it can scratch the itch of HC. I've always felt HC is basically Soft Core. It's never really be HC enough for my tastes. But, I do it anyway, as it's the closest thing we got to keeping people honest and on a level playing field.
What do you mean that HC is basically Softcore? Aside from the Celestial Trials, If you die: - Does your character not become unusable for the season? - Do you somehow not lose everything in its inventory? You sure you're not confusing Hardcore with PoE's Banish? If so, you can just press 3 buttons to achieve the same effect.
My feel is the majority of players will all transfer to the same server if/when server transfers are free, so in practice we'll end up with a megaserver.
@@Kydrou No, it's Soft Core. HC should force you to play every quest that is possible, not be able to use tomes/gear from pre-orders, no AH/ASE, only plat hires, and a bunch of other rules toggled on to make it truly HARD. But SSG wouldn't make $ if it was that HARD, so they let you buy things off the store to make it SOFTER, and people can be carried. I'd prefer an Ironman true HC approach, but they will never do it.
The attraction of hardcore for me was the goal was more focused, a lot of people shared the same goal and time was limited. If they can capture those three things with the merger and lanterns it should be successful.
If it’s only opt-in my concern is half the people are not doing it and they aren’t focused as you are. They may take chances that have bad consequences for you.
Its funny about players east coast, west coast of U.S. griping about ping. What about the Euro players. I cant find much in-depth specific info on server placements. but it was mentioned that no accommodation would be made for euro players, so it must be a factor somehow. Playing on Hardcore where I imagine there would be a lot of mix, I dont remember having much issue, though I was playing with other euro players in teams. Either way its good for the game but, there is a but.
Actually the major spikes in lag recently were due to the data center…and yea ping has an impact! I’m excited to see the west coast have an advantage for a change!
If they are moving to where I think they are moving (Switch Communications) this will be a HUGE win for everyone including players in Europe. Switch is hands down in my humble opinion the best data center in the world. Ping and lag issues should be a thing of the past. Up until recently it was Impossible to get into Switch due to being sold out.. They have expanded a large amount over the past few years opening opportunities like these for companies like standing stone etc.. This should be a huge improvement....
Hopefully this will help, I've followed the LOTRO news on their updates and DDO seems to be following suit. Sadly our guild left over a year ago and all of us were VIP. I am kind of the one with the eye on the news to see if anything is viable to come back. We'd talked in length about what is happening and that other companies are able to port or at least get their IP into a new game engine. I'm not strictly talking graphics of course (we don't have to beat that dead horse of course). But in netcode and just quality of life improvements. Will keep it positive and hopeful they can get it all patched up (it is seriously a patchwork quilt of code! LOL) and maybe functional as they intended. I've never hit another game with so much customization for a character and truly do love that. But as it stands our guild is now The Outcasts of Faerûn on ESO. LOL. Fingers crossed and watching and waiting. ;) And Axel, you rock. Have followed your stuff for years. Thanks for keeping up with the info and straight up news.
Know a little something about the Data Center in Las Vegas... My guess they are moving to Switch Communications, IF that is the case that is a HUGE win for DDO in general. Switch Communications at one point was the largest SuperNAP on Earth, I think that since changed but not by much. Basically the network infrastructure is ultra redundant making the network almost undroppable. This will be a HUGE win for the DDO player base in my opinion once they get all of the transfer logistics managed, hands down Switch is the best data center in the world..
The last 32-bit Xeon processors were part of the Nocona and Potomac Point families, which were released in 2004 and 2005. This should have been done a very long time ago. I myself have been 64-bit on my PC since Windows 7.

Maybe it's just my mindset, but you spent too much time focusing on "how to stop people form cheesing lanterns" I never quite understood the reasons for being so harsh on people trying to utilize game mechanics to circumvent something. A person with 1274 Hard Core titles and 300+ cosmetic rewards and he cheesed them all? Couldn't care less, good for him, I'm still playing the game I enjoy.
the lag in ddo is nobody's fault but are own. Have been playing for a couple years. In that time I have watched the toon with the bloody footprints run by with a couple of pets in tow, with the faire wings, on some glowing mount that also leaves footprints. So when everyone wants all this and everyone uses all this - Geeeee I wonder why there is lag.
Absolutely bizarre "hardcore" server that no one asked for. These devs are just not on point recently. The compelling thing about hardcore is that the servers are full and there are none stop groups like back in the days. Also you didnt mention the biggest disappointment here. There will only be 1 64 bit server that you have to start fresh on. And if, IF that is a success they will roll out servers to transfer to. Another stupid decision.
To me the most compelling things about hardcore were starting off fresh, having a large player base, and having new enemies/challenges.

Sadly, it Will be VIP only at first
@@DrJadedragon for the initial free transfers yes but the test is open to everyone I believe.
@@r8chlletters the way I understod it, the first server Will have No transfers (at first) and the first server Will be VIP only.
Don't be fooled. (Not that it will make any difference)
They are about to end free play.
The move will do little to nothing to fix the lag or other problems.
This title has had a good run. The free ride is over and I for one will not be subscribing to a 20-year-old game with more bugs than Mara-Largo.
East coast, West coast... No mention of us second class citizens in the EU of course.
It was discussed in the interview. Sev said essentially that right now they can't justify EU servers, financially.
You should see how it is in Aus. 300 ping is green. Jumping puzzles really are a dice roll.
@@Fatknacker62 if the population grew significantly then it would justify a 64 bit server. As it is I believe we should expect VIP to go up in price once this is in place…
So basically I can expect a week of downtime somewhere in the near future.
Gotcha 👍
The game is done
We are not allowed to enjoy hardcore anymore because casuals cry about everything. I have watched these people slowly destroy the game over the years.
