    Ok it came out!!!! Believe it or not, my 12 year old managed to do it. He rotated it and I use a pry bar to slightly nudge it for ward and it popped straight out. Nearly landed on his head but he was VERY happy with himself.
    So it rotated slightly anti clockwise at and angle and then a little nudge forward and you’re home.
    Thanks again for all the help.

    Great video. All this video did for me was confirm I need to pay the $8k to have the dealership do it.

    Love the video! Perfect step by step instruction on how to take it apart, and put the compressor back in. A few things to note. It would have been nice to show where the service ports on the engine are for the low and high side, what refrigerant it uses, and the label for how much refrigerant it takes. The only other thing that's a correction is the final piece isn't actually an accumulator. It's a filter drier. You were spot on that it has desiccant, and it captures all non-condenseables in the system from reaching the compressor. An accumulator is a gas chamber designed to protect the compressor from receiving liquid refrigerant back from the evaporator. Basically guarantees the compressor will always receive vapor and never liquid because liquid refrigerant will destroy the compressor.
    I researched that the compressors on R8s are always failing, and its a toss up when they will fail. It makes sense why they fail considering they're literally right next to the exhaust manifold... Was the OEM compressor you pulled out a denso too?

    Great stuff. This has been in the back of all Gen 1 R8 owners and is one of those known major failure points to a little great car. I will share it on R8talk... Great resource for R8 owners.. Cheers...

    Great video - both the description and camera work! I’d heard talk that the AC compressor could be replaced without removing the engine. I guessed it would have involved loosening the engine mounts to partially reposition the engine. I’m surprised it’s even more straightforward than that. Audi obviously didn’t research this procedure as well as you did. Thanks for providing the details on how this can be done.

    Would you usually look at doing a carbon clean on the intake valves whilst the inlet manifold was removed.?
    Great detail on replacing the compressor and the tools / access required to do so. Thanks for taking the time to create and post the video.

      Yes I would perform that without hesitation if it was needed. This particular vehicle only had 10k on it and the valves were in great shape. It is good practice to clean valves on vehicles with direct injection when they are apart it just saves time and headaches in the future. Glad this video was helpful!

    Hello bro, thanks so much for your video, Unfortunately after putting things back, i got an EPC light and reason is the intake manifold position sensor code and everything us connected so i removed the intake again.
    My question is the intake runner have to be closed or opened when putting the intake back?

    Hi there from the UK.
    I am currently carrying out this job on my R8 (on axle stands laying on my back)😅
    It is going very well with your guidance and I am just about to unbolt the compressor. My question is “can I remove the compressor with undoing the drive shaft”
    From what I can see will she not rotate happily, pull slightly forward and then down through the hole with the shaft on?
    Cheers for the great guide, I was about to put this into Audi and have my trousers pulled down. 😂

    I was negotiating with a dealership for a 2012 r8 until I saw numerous videos on this common problem . I am assuming heat destroys the compressor considering is the compressor is up against the engine and under the engine My question is would wrapping the compressor with fiber glass wrapping work in order to keep the heat off the compressor Thanks

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't think heat is to blame for the failure of these compressors. The feedback that I have had from owners is that failure typically happens when they are under acceleration and a loud bang / pop is heard. My best guess would be that the compressor has issues with vibrations due to the "drive shaft" that turns the unit, or it could be an overall level of pag oil used as well. When the compressors fail the internal shaft separates and explodes the case.

    • @meetpaulcraig
      @meetpaulcraig 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tsgarage523 would this suggest that the compressor unit is more likely to fail while the ac is on and similtaniously under high acceleration.

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be done but I’m sure it will be a little more of a struggle, it’s always easier with more access height.

  • @spinnetti

    Great video, thanks! Mine is still good, but I think I'd rather pay you for this job :) Looking under the plenum from the back of the car, I see a loose 2-wire connector facing to the back of the car sitting above the reinforcing bridge under the intake. Any idea what that is? (I had a rat nesting under the intake)

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the connector is under the air inlet tubes it is most likely the variable valve timing solenoids

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to attach pressure gauges and see what the system is doing when demanded on. Typically you can see the holes in the case of the compressor when they fail as well

    Hey man,
    Ok! I am getting ass kicked. I have everything off (6 little ac driveshaft bolts removed) and the three AC bolts out but she just won’t rotate. Just so I am clear, am I trying to rotate the compressor clockwise? You hand movement right at about 16:40secs suggests clockwise but she just jams tight.
    I am so close to having this thing on the bench it is killing me. .

    • @tsgarage523
      @tsgarage523  ปีที่แล้ว

      The shaft and flange will stay in the car for now until you get the compressor out of engine bay. Once that’s out you can slide the shaft out and separate it in a vice

    • @tsgarage523

      Yeah, you’re gonna have to rotate it. You might just have to use the prybar to bend the exhaust manifold, heat shield a little to give it enough from the squeeze out of it.
