Not just the lines though, his delivery, honed and tweaked after countless performances has made this funnier over time. It's the mundanity that births the genius - 'school trip tragedy, local man blamed'. I never thought those 6 words could be so fucking hilarious balanced with the horror of what they reveal.
Undoubtedly one of their best characters. And such clever writing, the way the details of the accident are slowly teased out. Makes me laugh (and cry) every time.
yes, his little monologue really is quite underrated. it's a shame that Gatiss' character in the second live show (and the second live show in general) where/was so disapointing

Even if you take away the comedy, you've still got some of the best character acting the world has ever witnessed. Seriously. Jealousy over another local mine attraction. The sketch is however hilarious and brilliant. Some say you need a dark humour to laugh at it! The irony is that it’s set in a cave underground! The darkest place ever 🤣🤣🤣
It's actually based on Stump Cross Caverns near Richmond, North Yorks. If they showed this instead of the 20 min video about limestone erosion (which is 19 minutes too long in my opinion) they would have far more visitors.
I think it's based on Peak Cavern (the Devil's Arse), Castleton. Took my kids a few years ago and then showed my eldest this sketch, he couldn't believe the resemblance. Imagine this character in a spoof series of Coast or something like that, priceless!
So I’m just binge watching the first series on iPlayer and for some reason I misremembered this scene in the episode & have been thinking it was a Mitchell and Webb sketch for the better half of a year 🙃
wonder where this was filmed, we saw them in bournemouth... sound wasn't great plus didn't have binoculars so not much idea what was going on but plenty of leg room cos at end with no seats in front. we came, we supported!

Not knocking this but the TV original is better because it's so silent and gloomily atmospheric apart from the dripping water and Mark's dismal intonations.

Literally just arrived 1/2 hour ago, it's the full boxed set with the Xmas special etc. I bought this last time for around $60 but lost it to my ex during the division of items :( So scoring it for less than $20 is bloody brilliant :D Yay!

Powerful emotional writing, juxtaposed to such humour makes for a devastating effect.

Always made me think of White Scar Cave in the Yorkshire Dales.
