New to home fish keeping but studied fish biology/ecology in college and work with fish as a career. This channel has some of the best info that I've come across with easy to understand analogies and explanations. Recently got an air stone for my new tank and noticed the foaming on the surface, which caught my eye. Sure enough, ammonia. Thanks for the tip and I'll keep that in mind.

i knew something was not right when all the cichlids in my tank were sitting together at the bottom of the tank and didn't bother to come up to the surface looking for food when i turned the light on. IT was 3am i was really tired, but THANKFULLY I did check the water chemistry. Turned out to be an ammonia spike, so yes, a 3am water change with my eyes mostly shut, but it saved their lives, so def worth it!!

I just found your channel today and I've subscribed for the simple reason you've pronounced the name "Betta" properly. Your advice is spot on, thanks.

    • @voluntaryismistheanswer
      @voluntaryismistheanswer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cheers2023 long enough to be an accepted variant imo lol, backing up and saying 'bayta, wait no, bettah' is a lot more intrusive to the conversation than just forgetting and slipping into more colloquial dialect. The ones that get ME: it's Godeeeeva chocolate- call Belgium, see how they answer the phone!- the g in misogyny is a hard GREEK g, pronounce it!- as annoying as someone saying 'Jeeradelli chocolate', and insisting in Italian the g is soft (while you're internally screaming 'Not followed by an aitch!') and THERE IS NO ACCENT ON THE FINAL E IN FORTE. It's 'fort', and I have been known to consider proper usage as an informal IQ test. So if you've ever tittered the non word 'forTAY' and felt clever, 'bayta' popo, judged by your own standards, you may fall a little short. 😝 Motes in eyes and all that.

@@0walleye0 True! I learned English as an adult primarily by reading. I live in Denmark and rarely speak English, but I have a kindle so basically everything I read is in English. Yeah, the fish flakes going rancid, I knew about kibble, but didn't consider them (I don't use them often, just a junk food treat for guppies as often as I would let myself have a donut- wheat? Soy? Potatoes? If you want a lot of undigested dog doo in your back forty, feed grain kibble. If you want lots of undigested fish poop in your tank, feed flakes. Garbage in, garbage out).

Hi Cory, So happy I found your videos and your online store. Wish I was closer to visit your brick and mortar store I would be there every weekend. From your tour videos looks like your shop and operation are "fish heaven"!. :-) I live in South Florida, you are always welcome (family included) to stay with us. I know that sounds weird but sorry I feel like I know ya. Or if you just need some local advice, I can help you. Sounds like from this video you are trying to plan to come to Florida to see our fish. I am an avid scuba diver and love the ocean but I only have freshwater planted tanks haha I participate in conservation events and Lionfish derbies to cull the very detrimental invasive species. I have placed a few orders on your shop and have always been pleased with the quality, speed, and care that goes into my orders. So a big HI from Florida to you, your family, and the rest of the Aquarium Co-op team!

Even though I've been in the hobby for 15+ years, and, been lucky with basic upkeep and care with all the fish I've had, after getting a new batch of fish in January, and, losing 2 green terrors, and,a blue acara in less than 2 weeks, and watching videos like yours and others, I,1: saw how stress and parameters (water flow, overfeeding, etc) affect fish, and,2: it made me be more diligent in my upkeep of the tank..,so, again, even though I been in the hobby for years, I'm always learning.

You're absolutely correct about your 'minimal soil' recommendation (1:29), and associated theory.
Add to that: 'nutrients' that are 'available' to plant roots (be it terrestrial or aquatic): the nutrients HAVE to be water soluble. This means that 'soil' added to the tank brings NOTHING nutrient wise... as whatever 'useful' that it has brought with it... IS water soluble... and moves to the filters, much as does nitrogen waste. (Iron 'flakes', going to Iron oxide, and a micro-nutro... possibly).
Even the 'sacks' of 'soil' you buy for your home garden; and the label on the bag states HOW WONDERFUL their concoction 'is.' AGAIN: their concoction HAS to be water soluble, and if a container plant, then on your second soaking... you'll see ALL their concoction exit the bottom of the container. .. and go down the drain.

I lost a betta and almost another due to bad food. I didn’t realize what was happening right away. I only switched my other betta to new food as a last resort and it really helped!
Also, food size is a big thing to watch out for too. My other tanks have dwarf gourami, and they are pigs. They out eat everything else in the tank. So I have to mix smaller food in so they don’t over eat and bloat up.

Hey Cory, thanks for the tips. I think some time stamps in the description would be really nice for these 2 hour videos tho, maybe something to think about. At least in the long ones where you go into many different subjects.

Blue Green algae blooms in nutrient spikes, while this can be many different sources, Excess detritus will cause it so keep a clean tank, and Phosphorus tends to be the primary nutrient that influences the growth, you can stave off Blue Green algae be monitoring and maintaining lower level of Phosphates, but this is not the only factor

Hi, could I please request you make a “highlights” clip of this type content? Ideally try for below 10 minutes. I find you have very practical advice and relatable examples for fish keepers although at 2 hours is a deterrent to watch. I still hit the like button!

Please make a highlights version so we can pick up some tips without sitting here all morning. :')

I actually love this kind of long content because I have am busy I can watch it over the span of a week just because it’s interesting to me. I can see where you guys are coming from though. In my opinion there is too many things to cram into 10 minutes because so much is important. Have a great day!

I love watching the live streams, length and all -- but I do think it would be nice to have shorter videos highlighting some of the advice you give here (and in other live streams), with a title that makes it easy to find for later rewatching...

For protein "slicks" I take my plastic measuring jug and just put the spout under the surface with the body into the water. Only the slick gets hoovered slowly into the jug.

I came across this video while searching for what could be wrong with my new setup. Fully planted, 3 month cycle, all parameters perfect. But fish not eating. Thanks to you Cory and my multimeter I discovered that a powerhead was leaking electricity. Quick replacement, tested good and now my fish are very happy and extra hungry. Huge appreciation from me and my fishes for everything you do :)
