I got a pair of Blue Light blocking glasses made from an Optician. When I got home the first thing i wanted to do was this test with my cheap UV light. The lens seemed to not block any of the UV light! Objects would still glow with the UV light going through the lens. I was upset because I thought for sure these glasses don't have UV protection. I took the glasses back and the Optician sent them out to two labs and both tests resulted in the lens having UV protection. The Optician even let me test them in her office with a UV Photometer and lo and behold they were blocking 98% UV! So weeks later I was still skeptical about my new Blue Light blocking glasses so I went to another Optical store and their machine also said they block 98% UV. So after my experience with my new Blue Light blocking glasses, I don't think the UV light test on lens is as accurate as we make it out to be.
You don't seem to have a good methodology if you're testing by fluorescence, probably it was not uv light that was doing that. I don't know which opticians you went to but two times? unlikely an error. Also blue light blocking doesn't necessarily mean uv blocking so it could be that- Do you have one of these cards sensitive to specifically uv? That would be interesting to test
@nuovoaccount998 yeah, i agree, I think it was fluorescent light passing through and not actual uv. Yes, it could have a blue blocking filter but no uv 400 protection, especially for cr39 lens. Unfortunately I don't have any of those uv test cards.
Another quick test is to take a UV led flashlight and shine it through the lens onto a standard credit card in a dark room. If you can see the security protection features fluoresce, the lens is not blocking UV.
@@Portal.l_9 A blacklight is basically UVA. Much like the card demonstrated; credit cards, passports and driver's license have UV printing embedded on the laminates. This will glow and show a special symbol or picture to making it difficult to counterfeit. You are not seeing UV you are seeing the inks reaction to UV.
@@2bnor2b20 My bad just figured that out. Is it definetly only UV that causes the flouresensce to react though or could it also be near UV? Just thinking some cheap UV lights might only be 5% UV 95% near UV or something. Also even if the torch is a substantial amount of UV the test won't tell you the wavelength range of UV that the sunglasses block? So the protection could roll off halfway down the UV spectrum and you'd have no way of knowing unless you knew the UV range of the light?
Outstanding video!!! Once I get my card, I'll know which of my glasses are good and which stink.... doing a lot of high hiking, good glasses are a must! If we were in the UK I'd nominate you for knighthood Mr electronicsNmore !
Thanks! A while ago, I was thinking about buying a UV meter, but they're expensive and clunky, although of course they give you more info. Now I have to find such a card in Hong Kong.
Dont tell project farm I see your videos first. LOL thats expensive for a UV detecting card but better than nothing I guess. I notice online just now it has a scale of intensity. How about those UV sprays to make any glass UV protected? Or should I make a request to project farm? Those old car dashboards would need something.
Thanks for doing all the work you do. I always feel enlightened after watching your content no matter the subject. Looking forward to checking in with Rose soon. Hope she is well. :-)
Glad you enjoy and appreciate the videos! If you look at the part in the video where the car door is open with me testing, you could see at the lower left part of the tinted window a chair is rocking. Rose is sitting in that chair. LOL. I don't bother her that much anymore to make videos, because not enough people watch. I get poor exposure on YT.
Im having polycarbonate installed over my bedroom..(The temps. only get as high as 78 F here (Mexico)....Getting varying info. as to its UV protection capability...worried about wrinkles only...would you do a test for Lexan polycarbonate? thanks
can you test which welding type emits more uv, Stick Welding (SMAW), MIG Welding GMAW, TIG Welding GTAW and Flux Cored Arc Welding FCAW. and if auto darkening helmets really block them 100%. tnx. pardon my english.
People should also be aware that the darker the tint that allows UV light in, the worse, because your pupils dilate more with darker lenses and thus let even more UV light in.
Thank-you! My pug’s cataracts are getting worse and I just bought her UV googles off Amazon. I want to test them before I assume they are protecting her.
It will help, but more than likely your pets cataracts are due to genetics. I had a friend of mine years ago take her dog in to correct the cataracts. Not cheap, but if your dog isn't too old and you want to have clear vision again, it's an option
@@electronicsNmorethank-you for the reply! I give her bilberry, spinach and carrots.. but she is 11 now. Even at 7 years-old the vet told me that surgery may not fix the issue. At least with sunglasses, it may slow the cataracts, and make her more comfortable as apparently sunlight is harsher on eyes with cataracts.
i was looking for a pair of glasses that would make the whole world look like it was under a black light, I guess that does not exist hehe, thanks for the great video, everything seems to block uv light, im su confused about wave lengths and radiation , i had a black light in my bed room for years I guess that was bad?
Thanks for the video. I was always under the impression that normal glass blocked most UV. Seems not! By the way, the cards now appear to be unavailable. Maybe your video caused them to sell out!

Excellent video! Thank you!!
Thanks! Looking forward to yours. :-)
Please do a video about UV protection of car coatings (ceramic, wax, synthetic sealer etc)!
Thank you for you comment. @Project Farm

How would you be able to see it anyway if its UV? Humans cant see UV.

or just any paper money.... but thats a just a test if it blocks it completly.
This is perfect. Just bought one of these for some testing I wanted to do. Thanks for the video.
Excellent video, I will be looking to ordering some of those test cards. Thanks!
Thanks. The cards will definitely come in handy!
This is the video I was searching for! Thanks for the great effort :)

This is perfect, is used a 365nm flashlight and something fluorescent to check for uv protection, i get similar results as my optician.
What you read as uvc many be uvb ray. This card can not distinguish between uvb or uvc. It shows as uvc even uvb led.

You're welcome! Thanks for watching
very well done!
Great job! You always come up with useful things I never knew existed!
Great video, I bought the UV card with your link.
Do you have a link to the glasses that work for a,b&c?
This video was very helpful👍
Super cool stuff!

nice! im gonne get one of these cards to check my house and buissness windows.
I have always been interested in buying a high spectrum powerful UV torch.
Please tell me you got exactly what I'm looking for
Did you ever find a realUV torch and what brand
Another great video as always.
I loved your video! Is it better to order a 365nm or 395nm black light flashlight to test sunglasses or does it matter at all?
Can you use this to test clothing??? If not how can I test clothing
how many watt uv light that you used by that Torchlight

Hi Joe. There's a link posted in the video description area. Thanks for watching!
Wow. Thanks
How could you tell that the glasses were blocking UVB but not UVA when the indicator card just says ULTRAVIOLET?
How can we sea uv light when we couldn't see it naked eye
Have you tested like 5$ glasses, curious to know
I do not see the card for sale
Does ordinary home window glass block UVB? how much?
From what I understand, it will block virtually all UVB UVC

Does ordinary glass block UVB? How much?
Majority of sunglasses sold block 99.9% of UVA and B
Best is to buy sunglasses from a trusted manufacturer. Now which test helps us to find the trusted ones?
👍 👍
Why not testing sunglasses with sunlight instead of flashlight? With flashlight, you only confirm the glasses block one wavelength.
No english but i understoot
👍🏻
Imagine using this around a uv laser, and blinding yourself
Definitely not for use with a UV laser. :-)
You need to get a bitcoin wallet.
