DUDE THANK YOU SO MUCH. after putting in a brand new transfer case for 1500 she wouldn’t go into drive. Guess what. Your fuse TREC was blown like you suggested. Thanks a million.
Thank you. All we had to do for our situation was unplug the battery overnight and then the next day plug the battery back and it seems to be running good now. Time will tell if our issue is fixed. Thanks again for this video!
MY GUY!! Thanks for this video you just save me. My truck got stuck on 4high when I was getting my boat out of the water . I look all over until I found your video disconnecting the baterry and pulling the fuse work for me. THANKS!
WOW...that is the EXACT problem I'm having. Been looking ALLL over for and answer and not qwite finding a fix or pretty much nothing. FINALLY I come across ur video and it's exactly the problem I'm having in the exact order as well. Hopefully this helps thank you!
I am having same issue on my 05 burb. Going to replace tccm. Stuck in 4 low. The lights are still on and when I start the engine and I push 2 high the light on 2 high and 4 low stays on but still stuck in 4 low. Thank you for your video. Your video came up first when. I searched. Take care
Thanks for your video and advice. I'm like you, not going to throw $$$.$$ at the problem. What helped was identifying the TREC 30A fuse location under the hood. I check and could n't find the correct fuse. Once I checked TREC it was not blown but I took it out, put it back in and suddenly everything works again. Previously none of the lights on the 4WD were working, and I was stuck in low gear but the truck was only in 2WD, I know because i was spinning tire going uphill. Good to go now. Also I cleaned the grounding location on the frame rail.
My issue ended up being the 4wd actuator and the 4wd fuse on the drivers side fuse box. There is a small black disk inside the actuator that I swapped out and haven’t had a problem since.
My truck's been doing the exact same thing that you just explained in this video only ask for money at it and replaced a bunch of stuff and it still did it I'm going to try this I'll let you know how it works for me thank you
yeah, thanks man, I was chastised bad as an elevator technician for being a parts chaNGER , SO TROUBLESHOOTING IS MY PRIORITY TOO! but a combination of both is real world reality, so much is needed to do point to point troubleshooting nowadays, swapping a part at no cost can be a time waster or it can fix something. overnight battery disconnect does help. POR it was called in the trade. Power On Reset! did hundreds or thousands of them for Otis elevator when the computer programs were developing!!
100% and if you really look at it I did both in this video so hopefully others had a way to start. Big thing is to start off free and work your way through it.

Same symptoms. Something different to try..trec operates the front axle actuator. With truck off and in auto or 4X you can hear the actuator lock the front axles or unlock when you pull the fuse.
Thank you! Just saved my bacon. I turned on the truck like you said and pulled the fuse to the transfer case. Plugged it back in. Transfer case reset and I was able to press 2H and it switched back into 2wd. I guess I won't be switching to 4wd to avoid this issue again. Thank you again.
I'm having this exact issue right now. Like you I also noticed the control switch change every now and then. And I simply switched it back. TIL YESTERDAY AT 1:30 PM IT SWITCHED TO 4 LOW STAYED IN 4LOW. Had to drive for about half an hour at 25 miles an hour in a 60 mile an hour speed limit. My concern is that it's that exact piece that's wrong with 4×4 issues. Like you said it's expensive. But your video left out what connector goes first when reinstalling the tccm. But the way you explained the rest of the video was awesome! Thanks buddy.
my 07 chevy suburban had the same problem i just updated the software in it and it’s running perfect it had old software in from 2007 now it hads 2023 new software
Thank you so much for the video I had the same situation in my 05 Tahoe 5.3 (in case anyone else finds that helpful). Except my lights on the 4wd switch went out completely while driving I kind of expected that needed replacing. But my dash also kept telling me to service 4wd and stability disabled with the damn dummy light up top as well. As far as the transfer case...I could only be sure it wasn't in low bc it ran like it somehow went to 2. I was so worried about my poor "fat ass" Tahoe I spent all night on the internet. But I just went ahead and did both the switch and the TCCM. My TCCM was 318$ at Orileys (Nevada in case thats helpful) with core charge of 192$ and the 4wd switch was I think 55$. It was difficult to get the damn plugs of out the tccm but putting it back was easy. Be sure the 4 pin goes in last like the fellow mentioned in his video :). It said so on a sticker on the actual part in my case though. A little tip I've found super helpful is a good old fashioned Hanes book it helps to referenceall these videos found online. I might not have needed the TCCM. I never bothered to go have any code read. I was sure I wasn't lucky enough to spend only 55$. I hope yall don't need to do the TCCM. Also I only waited maybe 45 mins before hooking up the battery after I put the new TCCM in. And everything was GTG. Good luck Tahoe drivers.
Excellent my man. You still have your rig 4 yrs later? I have a 2005 Yukon SLT. I prefer the previous generation with good ole 4x4 shift lever on the floor. So much better!
Wondering if after removing battery , short the positive lead to ground thru a resistor. This might drain the charge much faster, and no more 5-6 hour wait. More like 10 minutes. I'm going to try it.
So the 4x4 switch on my truck doesn’t light up at all only one that lights up is the 2high but the others don’t , any recommendations on what to do ? I’m thinking it could just be the switch but I’m not too sure , been going crazy about since it’s been almost a month since my truck started saying service 4wd
Did the code ever come back? I am currently fighting this battle. Found a used tccm on eBay and replaced it. Worked great for about 10 minutes. I’ve cleaned the ground wires on the frame, checked fuses. I will try leaving it disconnected from battery for a few hours. Pretty frustrating!
Once a month I will put my truck in 4 on a straight line on my way home and lately it will stick in 4. I did notice that leaving it over night fixes the issue. I was also told that getting the module reflashed will fix the issue.
Also I noticed the stereo. I wanted to swap stereos. Plugged the new one in and wouldn't power up. Turned out to be new stereo. After directly testing it to battery. When I tested power it wasn't showing much voltage , nor the accessories wire. But the factory double din stereo worked no problem. Im hoping when I find whats causing lack of power to stereo it might be the reason my encoder motor isn't working. I've done all the things you tried. Except the plug in order and battery disconnect for more hours. Thank for video
Did you use a harness for your radio install? I had a cheaper one that gave me similar issues. I swapped to a Critchfield one and issues were gone. I honestly think these Chevy's around these years do have wiring issues in a lot cases. My issue has not come back but the chase down to find the original problem was not fun at all.
I hope this works, I just purchased a 99 with 90k and I already have 1k in parts in it and I just replaced the encoder motor and the switch. I got 3 TCCM from the junk yard and I swapping them and same issue so I'm going to try these steps... Thanks wish me luck
My 04 z71 Tahoe is doing the exact same thing. No lights on the selector switch and often times stuck in 4 low. Usually turning the truck off and on would work but still nothing. No lights on the switch but feels like it's in neutral or auto 4wd. Very frustrating. I will try what you did, hopefully I have some luck. Thank you!
I've been trying to figure out a similar problem. I bought a used t-case module today and it didn't fix the problem. I didn't detach the battery, and I don't know what order I plugged it in, but I'll try this anyway.
This problem sucks because it seems that everyone has the problem but all fixes are one of the many I have went over or others have added. It’s a frustrating issue for sure.
Thanks for this video, I have 2006 Nissan armada and when jacked the truck up only the left rear driver tire was moving the rest of them were still with the 4x4 on. Do You have any Idea what is going on there. Thank You again!
Start with the fuses and then check the relays on the passenger side. If you have auto level you can swap the fuses. If that doesn’t help check for leaks on the differential and make sure the drive shafts are firmly seated as they can wear out and get pushed out almost a half inch causing similar issues. Hope this helps.
My new to me '04, Z71, Burb switched on it's own, no engine crank sometimes, door locks acting up and check engine light was always on too. The single black/white stripe ground wire at the rear of pass. head had a weak connection. Added enough wire to attach it to the firewall ground stud on drivers side that has braided strap to engine rear. Fixed all the problems. Also clean grounds on frame below drivers seat and ground on frame below core support, drivers side. Bad grounds cause lots of problems.

@@theleader5001 Componets do go bad but at least with my generation truck I would clean the grounds first. Many have fixed their problems including Limp Mode by simply cleaning the grounds. A weak ground can cause a ton of hard and intermittent problems. Sometimes it's hidden as under the drivers seat there is 2 wires in 1 eyelet but if you don't push plastic conduit back you wouldn't see the second wire broke off. I didn't need it but my mechanic can look it up and tell me where all the grounds are located and I'd slip him a $20. That ground wire fixed all my problems but now I need to do an overhaul. Hope this helps.
I have the same issue with 2004 suburban. I did buy a rebuilt transfer case actuator but my mechanic said it was a bad tccm since his snap on scanner could not communicate with the transfer case. I spent $230 for a Cardone rebuilt tccm. After installing he was able to send commands to the transfer case and get it to shift through all settings with the old transfer case actuator. But still no shift from the dashboard controls. The switch does now light up and sequence when the truck is started. So the new tccm did improve the problem but not fix it. I did get a new switch today but it didn't help. I returned the transfer case actuator to Amazon and will send back the switch too. I did insure that the 4 pin connector was plugged in last but I didn't leave the battery disconnected for awhile like you said. I'll try tomorrow. But other than that I have no idea and my mechanic is stumped too.
Try resetting the battery and cleaning the grounds as well as ensuring the harness to the transfer case is clean, not wet, and not corroded. It sounds like your close to solving your issue.
@@Alpha-Works-Tx when you say reset the battery, you're saying to disconnect it for a few hours to give the system time to clear? These 4wd systems are finicky and the older they get the more issues electronics and wiring will have. You probably just reset since you pulled the fuse for the middle of the system.

I got a 04 4-door Z71 yesterday the guy said the four-wheel drive works he bought a new push button for it because the old one just said it was in neutral but clearly it was in two-wheel drive. I got home with the truck last night put the new button in soon as I plugged it up it flashed for low in the truck is stuck in four low. I just want to know if pulling that fuse actually disengages the four-wheel drive because I don't want to tear up the front end trying to drive it to work tomorrow
If you drive it you will know if it’s in 4wd vs 2wd. Pulling the fuse usually does the trick. I would check the grounds and disconnect the battery to reset everything.
06 tahoe with new actuator, I have done the fuse reset under the hood, 4x4 fuse inside is good, start the vehicle and it always starts out in 4hi, won't go into 2wd or 4lo but you can hear the actuator trying and can only drive it in auto4x4. Does that sound like a tccm issue?

My ram 1500, 08 has started trying to go in by itself. Today walked up to it and unlocked truck with key button and transfer case switch started running, key on my hand. When it stopped I could push unlock button on key and it try again. What the hell happening??
Pulling the trec fuse while its running for 30 seconds has been working for me for now, but soon i know i will have to replace the tccm. Im having the exact symptoms that you spoke of, very irritating.
My truck threw a code U1026 for atc/Trans no communication and it makes some of the gauges stop working the ac stop blowing cool and the radio will also get quiter it does this for like 4-5 seconds then goes back to normal and then does it again. Only when driving though. Doesn't do it unless there's wheel speed. I tried a tccm and installed it the way you did but did not disconnect the battery before doing so. Makes me wonder if that'd fix it.
Your issue makes me wonder if there is corrosion in the harness for either the transfer case or transmission. Are you in a place that rains a lot or has snow? A lot of people have seen the looms and connector clips holding water.
@@Alpha-Works-Tx Yes to both of those. Funny you say that it seems to go away if I go through a car wash or in the rain the problem seems to go away for awhile.
Well I tried all this as well and I still don’t even have lights except once in a while and the other day sitting in the drive through it lit up and would go into 4 hi and back into two hi and then nothing
That's weird, usually its just the switch and its a 5 minute replacement. The usual suspects are the 4wd switch, blower motor control module, instrument cluster and oil pressure switch and im probably forgetting a few ive already replaced. Its worth it though, I love my 05 GMC
So funny, same here with all the minor issues. But I'm about 99% sure that it's my TCCM. And I love my old 06 Silverado. Wife keeps telling me to trade it in for something new... No thanks.

I put all after market parts in my 09 sierra even had tccm flashe still 4wd not working going to unplug battery leave it set for a day I didn't no you had to plug a certain qay
That could be a bad relay or what it was in my case it was the ecm. Don't waste money trying to find a used one for the same year range just pay the 150 bucks and order one set to your vehicles vin number. Also if you have a factory radio it will lock it when it's changed out. I've been told dealers have to be the ones to unlock it but I think it's cheaper to buy a aftermarket one. Hope this helps.
Check your ecm in the box next to your battery. I had the same problem with the fan running and the ecm had corrosion on it. Replace it and problem solved.
My switch has lights for a couple seconds and then nothing. Does anyone know what I should try next? I tried the reset with the under hood fuses. I also cleaned the grounds on the frame.
I have zero lights on except for when I turn the key on. No 2 wheel, no 4 wheel, nothing but I have cleaned grounds, I have changed the motor on the transfer case, I bought a new switch, I've unplugged it from the battery. Still no lights in the switch. ???
If anybody can help on here I have no lights to my 2hi 4hi 4low I’ll check the fuses. It comes on every time it rains at all and I can’t figure out why I’ve clean the grounds changed the 4x4. I guess the next thing to do is change the actuator but I’m still wondering if I’ll get lights back to my 4x4my buttons
That sounds more like a transmission problem, but check your transfer case and make sure it is not cracked and leaking. I had to get a transfer case saver cover when mine cracked and it was around the time I was having transmission issues as well.
Hi Having the same problem. I changed the switch and front actuator still no lights on the switch and won't shift to 4 wheel. Also reading abs disabled any suggestions?
Hello, if the grounds have been cleaned and you have tried a battery reset, the next step would be transfer case control module. A lot of the people I have spoke with through the comments and also my personal issues with my truck have been resolved by changing the TCCM out.
Idk if that's what's going on with my 07 suburban but the light is no longer on. So idk if it's in auto,2,or 4. But when I try n turn the wheel left or right it make an awful sound like something is gonna snap and it feels like my tire is rubbing something that won't let the truck move hardly. Could this he the issue???
The sound and rubbing feel as well as something feels like it’s going to snap sounds like when my wheel bearing was going out. You would know if it’s in 4 whee drive as you would feel it when trying to drive fast. Have you tried any of the free steps such as battery reset and cleaning the grounds? Only thing I can recommend is to lift the front up and place it on jack stands so you can try and determine what the issue is or have someone look at it.
I pulled the fuse under the hood an it reset the switches in the dash but when I pressed the 4 low to put it in 4 wheel drive then gave the tahoe gas it started making like a clicking or pooping noise on left side and the 4x4 wasn't pulling I dunno wats going on ilthe 4x4 worked I parked it for maybe a year an now I can't get it to do no more than what it's doing now an Idomt have the money to just throw parts at it if u have a idea of what the issue may be I'd greatly appreciate it!!!
Try disconnecting the battery for a couple hours. While that’s disconnected check all fuses and clean the ground under the drivers side. Check your transfer case fluid as well and when your shifting the transfer case you are in neutral right?
Hey i'm having similar problems just wondering I know you said the 4 pin plug goes last when plugging in tccm but does it matter about the other 2 plugs or do they have to be put in a certain order ?
So I replaced my encoder motor for the tcase a month ago everything was working fine and then it start acting up again where it would go into 4H and then within a few minutes 4x4 wasnt working but it would say its still in 4H and now it dont even want to go into 4H but itll go into 4L no problem. Got any suggestions?
What brand encoder did you get? I’ve seen a lot of guys get some parts that only last a month or two can cause new issues. Honestly if I had a junk yard close to me I woulda pulled a TCCM out of that for only 10 bucks but electronics on these gm’s are finicky to say the least.
Ok. Found this from the other video I commented on. Symptoms are similar BUT I’m not getting an engine code like you did. I just get the service 4wd msg. But no code associated to the 4wd or transfer case module. Any experience with that? Or any insight..?
Lots of people have similar issues with no codes and it leads to TCCM or wiring at the transfer case. For the wiring just unplug and look at it make sure it’s not wet or corroded.
I’m having an issue where my 05 Tahoe, the auto 4wd and 2wheel drive lights are on. Replaced the actuator no change. Cleaned the ground and nothing. Also In the engine bay testing the connector that goes to the actuator only 1 pin out of the 4 has power to it.
Typically these symptoms lead to the TCCM being bad. Checking the free stuff and also your transfer case harness doesn’t hurt either some have found that the connectors at the transfer case were wet.
Mines frustrating the piss outta me. It randomly kicks into 4 low. Sometimes the nuetral light is on. Sometimes 2w and 4w on at the same time. It always seems to go back to 2 wheel after i cycle the ignition. Not sure what to do with it.
Two things that may help with this. One is the grounds and two unplug and clean both sides of every connector with a spray for electronics for the 4wd system from the switch to the transfer case motor. I know it may be more work but it seems that overtime these connectors get gummed and crapped up.
Cleaned my grounds and sadly the switch still was bugging out. Replaced the Transfer Case Motor and now 4WD and Lights on the switch work like they should! However the service 4WD Message still came up? Did I miss a step? Do I need to unplug the battery and reset everything? Can anyone help me?
After replacing parts make sure you clear the computer by removing the battery cables for 15 min. If all of your problems are fixed the message should clear up. It’s best to take it for a drive after clearing everything.
Yes the switch does a cycle then stops on the mode it is in. When I had issues with the tcm it only cycled the lights sometimes and other times it did not work at all.
I found a loose wire where it plugs into the 4x4 actuator , it's one of the wires in the big deutsch connector ( or whatever it's called ) truck was 3 months old , I filled with dielectric grease after pinching the connection tighter , it made till recently. Its acting up again ..07 silverado 1/2 ton 4x4 over 300000 miles
It's good to hear fixes like this as it gives others another avenue if they tried everything in this video. I'll pin it.
I honestly have the same issue with my truck it's a GMC Yukon XL four-wheel drive
04 tahoe same deal. Park doesnt even work. Have to choc the tires to keep from rolling
Dielectric grease is not electrically conductive. You can't just fill connections with it. That's not how you use it.

WOW...that is the EXACT problem I'm having. Been looking ALLL over for and answer and not qwite finding a fix or pretty much nothing. FINALLY I come across ur video and it's exactly the problem I'm having in the exact order as well. Hopefully this helps thank you!
good job logically walking through the problem and fix. Subscribed!
Try cleaning the ground screws located on frame on drivers side
Right on, glad it helped
Thanks, I learned things I didn't know. I am currently stuck in 4wd lo
thanx bro you solving my truck problem it was trec fuse
Finally someone with the exact same symptoms as me!!
Same problem here also
My issue ended up being the 4wd actuator and the 4wd fuse on the drivers side fuse box. There is a small black disk inside the actuator that I swapped out and haven’t had a problem since.

Were you having the same symptoms this guy was talking about?
@@Alpha-Works-Tx yes, , this forum of helping each other is what i would label as smart and kind, what a society is supposed to be about, the etymology of society in french is like helpful and supportive, not competitive. Sometimes intuition can guide us as if it were magic, TOO!
Glad it helped 👍
Glad it helped
do I remove the fuse with the truck on or off?? before I remove battery cable or after?
my 07 chevy suburban had the same problem i just updated the software in it and it’s running perfect it had old software in from 2007 now it hads 2023 new software
Did you need to go to the dealer, or will non-GM scanners work?
Thanks for the feedback for others to check and glad it helped.
I forgot to add I did clean the grounds under the drivers seat...they were a little corroded but it made no change after i cleaned them
Still good? I’m having the same issue I switched the switch out today no changes. I’m going to clean the grounds on the frame below the drivers seat

Hey thanks for the video I’m having the same problem and I’m going to try that
Excellent my man. You still have your rig 4 yrs later?
I have a 2005 Yukon SLT. I prefer the previous generation with good ole 4x4 shift lever on the floor. So much better!
Great body style and motor. I do still have it and it’s Still running strong.
Thanks for sharing bro. Dealing with the same issue now.
Hope it helped
Wondering if after removing battery , short the positive lead to ground thru a resistor. This might drain the charge much faster, and no more 5-6 hour wait. More like 10 minutes. I'm going to try it.
Did that work?
It is frustrating and it did come back 3 years later. I haven’t messed with it since.
That’s insane. I’ve tried everything except this. I’m going to try it but I’m about ready to just ghost ride it off a cliff.
I'm having the same exact issue with a GMC Yukon XL four-wheel drive is having the same exact issue
Thank you!
It's frustrating for sure but try the free stuff and work your way onto the other stuff.
Did you say you had the truck running when you pull fuse?.
Yes
Does this also cover when you turn the vehicle on and the transfer case is in a different position?

Where did you get your woodgrain dash face??

Good video! I’m having the same problem with my 2006 Tahoe and my fan also stays on unless I unplug the fuse! How can I fix this ?
That could be a bad relay or what it was in my case it was the ecm. Don't waste money trying to find a used one for the same year range just pay the 150 bucks and order one set to your vehicles vin number. Also if you have a factory radio it will lock it when it's changed out. I've been told dealers have to be the ones to unlock it but I think it's cheaper to buy a aftermarket one. Hope this helps.
Check your ecm in the box next to your battery. I had the same problem with the fan running and the ecm had corrosion on it. Replace it and problem solved.

That sounds more like a transmission problem, but check your transfer case and make sure it is not cracked and leaking. I had to get a transfer case saver cover when mine cracked and it was around the time I was having transmission issues as well.
Hi
Having the same problem.

@@Alpha-Works-Tx what if it is wet? Is there anyway to fix
@@elireynolds7131 air hose and let it dry out.
@@Alpha-Works-Tx now it's saying I'm in 4 hi and 2 hi but it's in 4 hi and won't switch to anything else
Can you pull the trec fuse to disable the 4x4 and just drive it that way?
It would for me before but another time it didn’t. Try removing it and you will be able to tell when driving if it’s in 2wd only.
If its in 4 weel drive YES !
Sounds like the TCCM
My switch for the 2hi ,4hi,4low have no lights at all and i can't switch it to 4x4 any idea what that could be?
I have the same problem, my suburban sometimes turns to 4 wheel drive suddenly by itself. How you fixed it?
Thanks
@@theleader5001 you can diagnose the switch pretty easily. Mine ended up being the shift motor on side of the transfer case.
Thank you
Glad it helped
Cleaned my grounds and sadly the switch still was bugging out. Replaced the Transfer Case Motor and now 4WD and Lights on the switch work like they should! However the service 4WD Message still came up? Did I miss a step? Do I need to unplug the battery and reset everything? Can anyone help me?
After replacing parts make sure you clear the computer by removing the battery cables for 15 min. If all of your problems are fixed the message should clear up. It’s best to take it for a drive after clearing everything.
@@Alpha-Works-Tx Ok i reset it and will find out tomorrow if it works! Thanks!
What's the switch flashing on as soon as you turned it to position two?
The red seat belt light flashing?
Unless your asking about the selector switch which flashes all lights then shows which mode the transfer case is in.
Was* and I meant all the lights on the selector switch
Yes the switch does a cycle then stops on the mode it is in. When I had issues with the tcm it only cycled the lights sometimes and other times it did not work at all.
@@Alpha-Works-Tx cool, will try the few hrs reset
