This was a real saver for us. Our transmission belt broke and tore up some wiring. Fixed the wiring just fine and with your video we made sure we had everything else back in place as it should be. Thank you
JASON!! Bought my 265 summer of 93. These belts pop, you’re just left sitting there like huh?,what?, FOOL! Trying your way here in 019, my 2nd belt. I did the disassembled install in 05. You’ve answered the questions I had then, so “on the back and slide “ this time. Thanks man.
Good information, It worked for me after a little struggling but then i didn't jack it up. It was a tight fit and it helped to turn the engine with a socket on the clutch so the belt would slide over the fan blades easier.
I have a 245 JD, but it looks exactly the same. I've been doing research on how to put my new belt on, (old one broke during use) and all I have found so far is crap about removing the pan/pulling the clutch, and it just didn't look to me like I should have to do that. This video is much appreciated!
Still a lot easier to just drop the clutch. Gives you a lot more slack in the belt to get it done. Dropping the clutch is just the one bolt. Easy peasy!
Great Video!! i just did this. screwed around with getting the belt over the fan on the rear end for about 5 min. Could not get it in place with ease . I knew my PTO will come off easily,so i took the pto off and went on like a charm. Now if your PTO won't just slip off i recommend putting in the extra effort to get the belt over the Fan on the rear end. it can be done.
I tried this method and it almost worked. My problem is that the belt got stuck between the fan and the pulley. I had to take of the riders platform, gas tank, and fan to get the belt over the back pulley (not a big deal…just an extra 9 bolts). If your belt is still on, I would recommend taking a video of how it is all routed because it’s not exactly self explanatory for a newbie.)
Thanks for the video, very helpful. It took me longer than 10 minutes because I didn't read your explanation about the guide bracket, had a lot of trouble separating the electrical plug and some trouble getting the belt over the fan and onto the rear pulley. Installing the spring went much easier than I thought it would.
Very helpful video - thank you. The process is nearly identical for my John Deere 240 (just no fan in the rear). Two details that may be helpful for others: 1) with tractor in neutral and with ebrake on there's no need to loosen the spring tensioner, at least on the 240. 2) Nuts only need to be loosened, not removed!
This approach sure makes short work of what I thought was going to be an horrific job. The hardest part was having to put a toboggan under each rear wheel to tow it to the garage (the lever to disengage did not work as the manual said) and having to cut off the original shredded belt; and cleaning up the grass and gunk from under the frame. There was only a minor difference between your 265 and my 285; that being an additional wire guide.. Thanks for the video
Thanks Jason! I started with the fan pulley and ran out of slack originally. :) Both my idlers are shot, so $25 for a pair of those (AM115682 on the 285 model)...hope that was the source of the belt breakage in the first place. Someone sharpie'd the belt size on the under-carriage....looks like the previous owner did this a time or two, and didn't think to check the idler pulleys.
My 265's belt is loose and the tractor will no longer climb a modest hill, so I'll be looking at this and inspecting all the idlers and spring. Need to learn the best way to remove the mower deck first. Also hoping the trans fan blade moves as you say; my trans release lever in the back does nothing and the trans can't be disengaged from the wheels. Thanks for the video.
By running the belt straight back and going over the fan blades one blade at a time. The fan blades will turn by hand. You then run the belt thru the pulleys and set the spring. Its very easy.
Five years later your a life saver! Thank you
just got an old 265 and of course the belt is toast. this is going to save me time, thanks.
Thank you. It saved me about $300.

Fantastic video! Just installed belt on 93 jd 320...exact components as shown!!!
You made process simple, easy & stress-free! Thank you
Thank you very much. Last time I pulled the PTO clutch I put it back wrong and had to buy another. You saved me a bunch.

Awesome explanation. You made this install SO much easier.
Thanks for the video. Took longer than 10 minutes but without the video, I would have been lost. Can’t thank you enough.

Edit….there may have been something I could have done to get the extra inch of slack I needed, but for the life of me I couldn’t figure it out.

We tried your method it worked, but it is not real easy to get the belt over the fan blades, but it is possible. Thank you!

Thanks homie! It worked!
The over the fan blade technique works like a dream. Takes about 3 minutes to actually get the belt in place.

WOW !! Just saved me hours , and probably a ticket to HELL! The next beer is on me !! THANKS
Super great video! Worked GREAT! YOU DA MAN!!!
So glad I found you video. I have a Sabre but am going to try this! Thanks!
Like a charm, Thank you Jason!
Wouldn't it be easier to start from the rear and loop the belt over the trans fan?
Nah
I just tried that
The belt won’t go over the clutch
So , I found this video
Cause I didn’t want to pull the clutch
Thanks man helped a lot
Yeah im gonna stick to laying brick lol. Im not mechanically inclined at all 😓

This should work for other deere riders
I need help adjusting my deck height, please.
The knob between to loose to adjust. I hope I did not break it.
How do I adjust it
very informative, but it would be a really good video if you had better lighting, just putting it out there. thanks.
The front idler pulley. Is it supposed to be solid secured in the adjustment slot or able to slide?
It's solid if I remember right. It's the rear pulleys that are attached to the spring that hold the tension.
Hey my name is Tony i have a question i have a 285 john Deere im trying to put the drive belt on it does it go on the same way as the 265 john Deere
