  • @sharonthehuman5954

    What I find amazing is that this is a high end price point and yet they use the cheap windows that don't get good air flow, the standard inefficient RV furnace, no built in inverter, and cheaped out on the bathroom by not having a folding sink, a plastic toilet, and hardly any bathroom storage. For the overall value and features the NuCamp 400 is superior IMHO at approx $30k and 500 lbs lower GVWR. The nest does have better counterspace and kitchen storage (the ushaped dinette floorplan) which is really due to not having a fixed bed. Particularly in light of how originally the nest was supposed to be a lighter and less expensive option compared to the other airstreams.

    Wonderful trailer and informative walk-through. I have owned 2 fibreglass eggs (boler and Surf-Side), a Chinook fiberglass motorhome, and an Airstream. Love them all for different reasons. The only one that freaks me out in hail storms is the Airstream. The Nest is a winner! Most of the newer fiberglass trailers are far too heavy on the fake oak interiors. This one is light are bright like a boler. The laminated surfaces will wipe up easily. Oh this is sweet!! Love the aqua upholstery!

  • @brighton_dude

    I think this will be an enormous success for Airstream. I live in Europe and this reminds me of the Eriba travel trailer which everyone in Europe who has ever been to a campground will recognise, it has been such a popular trailer for decades.
    The market for this is massive in the USA. The amount of people with a car that will be able to tow this is huge and buying this would be far less than a class B motorhome. Also with the size of the yards (what we call gardens) is suburban US cities those people will be able to just put this somewhere in the yard.
    The interior is modern and will appeal particularly to urbanites. It contrasts with the interiors of many US RVs which are really old fashioned.
    I think that its shape and look is very friendly and will go a long way to reduce fears some might have of towing.
    It's fun and trendy and I think there is a huge market for it.

      @k.r.v.4219 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There will be some very stiff competition for these new Airsteam trailers! Mainly because of the price! For what their asking for these, you can get an amazing 25’ or so, with a slidout, ducted A/C, with a real walk around queen bed and more importantly a DRY BATH, with storage and sink. All for a LOT less money! With still a three season insulated heated tanks and aluminum composite construction! But you will need the available tow rating of at least 7,000 lbs. but with that come ROOM. and capacity.

    • @brighton_dude
      @brighton_dude 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, you might be right, however my guess is that the Nest is aimed at a different market. I think that this is for urbanites who probably have a medium sized SUV.
      I am in Europe and one thing I notice is that the RVs made in the USA are not designed with urbanites in mind. They very often have interiors from the 1970s and they are huge. I suspect these are made for the rural population who have a lot of space to put things like that and have a very traditional taste in interiors.
      I have lived in New York City and the people I know who live there would, I think, consider the Nest, but I don't think they'd consider one of the RV's you mention.

    • @k.r.v.4219
      @k.r.v.4219 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      brighton dude there is one other issue I did not bring up that had to do with price. That’s a little thing called excise tax! It like property taxes. Depending on the cost, you pay a percentage of the value to your local town/city. In N. Y. I’m sure it’s very high! I bet the first year of ownership in the rotten big Apple for a $35,000 RV will be in the neighborhoods $2,000! Just to own one! It makes no sense to me to spend almost three times as much as I did on my Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16FQ, that has a walk around queen bed and dry bath! With A/C, all LED lights, heat and weighs only 3,600 gross! With plenty of storage and as much room as a Nest. So I bought a travel trailer for just $13,000, then a new truck for under $30,000, that we’ve had now for two and a half years, of fun and adventure all over the east coast from Bangor ME, to Key West FL, and as far west as the Smokey Mountains and Texas Gulf Coast! The truck we brought is a 2016 Colorado Z71,4x4, V6,Ext Cab, that does very well! We averaged 15 mpg over our present 6,000 mile trip.

      carla ifera, I don’t believe Airstream is actually marketing to you and your friends. Some folks are happy with sleeping in their converted van or pop up camper. That’s definitely not the market segment Airstream is targeting, they are targeting the customer that’s looking for a travel product that’s built to last, from a company that has attention to detail and utilizes high quality materials in their manufacturing process. It called “worth what paid for” or you get what you pay for.
      Happy camping!

    I'd love to have one of these if I had the cash! I was looking a few years ago but couldn't find anything small with my three needs: a kitchen, a bed, and a shower/toilet. I just want to travel around with my dogs and be comfortable! Get on it, trailer makers! Hahaha

  • @SerendipitySue
    @SerendipitySue 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    We stopped to see the Nest at a local dealer. Several things didn't sit well. First is the rear entry.
    If you are under the awning and it is raining, you have to go out in the rain to get in. The awning without the
    extra legs is pretty flimsy. In older, small campsites, you usually back the trailer right up to the brush. This would
    make getting in hard. The screen door would not last five seconds if you had a dog.
    When you come in the trailer, the refrigerator is on the left side. It does not run on propane! The microwave is on the
    floor, very impractical. I'm 6'1" and the table height is way too high.
    With the roof mount airconditioner and skylights, there is no room for solar panels. The front storage box only has one
    20lb propane tank. But it does have a portable solar panel connector (but where are you going to store 2-3 100 watt solar
    panels?). There was no stone guard in the front.
    There is limited exterior storage. The spare tire is under the trailer. Getting under the trailer on the highway
    with a blow out would be "fun".
    The look and the quality of the trailer are great.

      Heidi C. Franks - Have you ever purchased a trailer in the price range you seek? I have, complete waste of money. We arrived at our first destination to find the mattress wet from the rain, no clue where the water leak was, it had been raining. On subsequent trips cupboards fell apart, no electrical, battery shorted, water pump failed, Hell the first two years were hell. Then it started falling apart because the wood sides and underbelly get wet when we drove on wet roads. I tried to fix it but it was pointless.
      Airstreams are not the cheapest, but they are great value for the money. You either pay up front, or pay later with ruined vacations and repair expense.

      @@Erin-Thor Bull. I own and use (a lot) a 16ft Scamp that is in my mind at least as durable and comfortable as this is. And I'm sure costs at least less than half the price. I love Airstreams and have a 1978 Airstream Argosy that I'm working on, but I just don't see these as Airstream they just lack that classy hysterical quality that only the retro styles have.
    But as a modern piece of camper art, they're nice.
    Great job on your video.

    Nice review. Concerning the sliding curtains on all Airsteams. When the curtains are drawn and the MaxAir fan running, how much air gets through to circulate within? Be a shame if air circulation was hampered by the curtains which are needed for privacy at night.

      There is enough space to allow for a good flow of air. Please note the front window does not open, the sides do.

    We've been living in mfg-mobilehome for less than $50,000 about 1,200sf 3 bedrooms 2 baths, 2 carparks with a little garden and no mortgage. Property tax about $200 a year. We paid about $450 for trailer park in the city including city water and trash pickups. We're happy camper with small, basic, and more simple life!

    In 2016 Airstream acquired Nest Caravans, which was an Oregon-based company. Before the acquisition the Nest was $30,000. Airstream moved the production to Ohio and bumped up the price significantly.

    • @colonialairstream
      @colonialairstream  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert,
      Yes, before production, the trailer had few amenities which Airstream greatly improved.

    • @RobertVinet
      @RobertVinet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Colonial Airstream Not entirely. $30,000 was for a fully outfitted Nest. Airstream essentially added their name to it and bumped up the price. Is the Airstream name is worth $20,000?

    Love the design. Any opinion regarding maintenance and longevity of fiberglass compared to aluminum? Any advantage of fiberglass in those areas? Thanks

    • @colonialairstream
      @colonialairstream  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are both great products, you have to clean and wax the aluminum or fiberglass. The advantage to fiberglass is there are very few areas to maintain and caulk and no seams.

    Great video. As a total newbie to this and I’ve learned a lot from these as I consider what to buy. I have one comment and one question.
    First, I think I’ve watched 50 TH-cam videos on all kinds of campers and have read what feels like a thousand comments. I don’t think I’ve read one where someone doesn’t say “ great camper but I way I’m paying that”. Lol. Obviously someone is!
    Now for the stupid question I’ll take some flak for no doubt. Lots of comments here around lack of propane for the refrigerator. And some one said in the northwest there might not be enough sunlight to recharge the battery via solar. With the six pin attachment can’t you just turn on your truck and trickle charge it that way?

    • @colonialairstream
      @colonialairstream  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tow vehicle can charge the battery through the 7-way plug using the vehicles alternator.

    Two major flaws on what is a great trailer design, no convection microwave, and windows that need to open as much as aluminium Airstreams for optimum cross ventilation. Hopefully Airstream will address this in the near future. Thank you for making all these great videos, they're very educational. Have a great day =D

    i was curious about the suspension of the basecamp versus the (Nest). I think the Basecamp is a better fit for my lifestyle but it's so charmless to me. What are your thoughts?

    • @colonialairstream
      @colonialairstream  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Basecamp X will have a higher ground clearance. The NEST has a bit heavier axle due to its overall weight being more substantial.
