    Just a few words of advice to make this job much faster:
    1) you don’t need to take the front brace off at all, you can access the belt tensioner through the fender well with the special tool to remove the belt and reach around the tensioner to push the pin and lock it.
    2) Fully remove the fender liner, things are much easier that way.
    3) There’s a 10mm bolt accessible from the top holding the wiring harness to the engine that’s in the way of the water pump, remove that so the wiring harness is loose.
    4) you don’t need to drop the engine at all, stick a 10mm ratchet wrench in there and take off the water pump pulley by snaking it through the back of the engine.
    5) remove that plastic bracket holding the A/C line right above the oil pan so that the line can be moved slightly.
    6) you don’t need to drain the coolant system, just let the water pump do that when you loosen it.
    7) you don’t need to remove the aux belt tensioner or “lampshade thing” that you refer to it as.
    8) use a really long 1/4” extension on a small ratchet with the smallest swivel 10mm socket you can find (mine is snap on and works amazing) to remove the 5 water pump bolts. Remove the bottom three bolts, then loosen the top 2 and slightly pull the water pump, let the coolant drain and then remove the top 2 bolts.
    9) Snake the water pump out towards the back of the engine just like the pulley and then do everything in reverse order.
    Using this method I can have a water pump replaced in a matter of 45 minutes including bleeding the coolant system with a vacuum tool. I hope you actually practice the method I’m telling you because you can save so much time on this repair.

      That's a valid way to do the job. I am aware this method but it is very tight quarters and frustrating for a general audience so I chose not to showcase it.

    • @jb678901

      I will do the water pump along with the idle pulley tensioner AND at the same time as the thermostat housing and oil housing cooling gaskets. Then replace with new 50/50 G48 coolant, after all is said and done. I figure I will have more space for the idle tensioner replacement with the water pump pulley removed. With the water pump pulley off...best to replace with a new water pump too. I need a new thermostat soon and the oil filter housing gaskets (and cooler gaskets) are leaking...trying to kill all birds with the same stone, so to speak.
      As the downpipe will need removal to do this...will also upgrade the turbo oil feed line (S.S. flex line) and replace the turbo oil return pipe/o ring...since the wiring harness will have already been removed for the thermostat job I figure this will help with space/access/etc.
      My former garage used to do this stuff...until I realized they would rather charge labor for each replacement then do it all at once...most efficiently. They lost that business...to me.

    Great video of this procedure. You may be able to do this job through the wheel arch with the engine mounts in place, but removing the engine mounts makes the job SOOO MUCH EASIER. I have done it both ways and you don't save any time by not removing the engine mounts since time is wasted on trying to figure out how to get parts and bolts removed and reinstalled.

    Fantastic ! I am changing mine at the dealer tomorrow and I was curious how long and how complicated it is. I got my answer. I know I cannot do it. They will charge me $1100 but what can I say ? The coolant goes radically down in a couple of days.......Got to fix the problem. I knew the engine was overheating as the fan kept on going after I turned the engine off. I never got a light from the sensor. Maybe I just avoided a real problem but I got close.

    I'm not sure for LHD R56, but there's no need to remove headlamp & the front U-frame when changing water pump on the RHD R56.
    Also, I noticed you are using a different coolant type (green?). I'd stick to the original BMW one (blue). :)

    • @ModMINI

    Unfortunately her car is leaking oil I think it's just from the sump but there is a small amount near the crankshaft pulley, is there any way to make sure one way or the other? If it is the crankshaft pulley can I just follow the same steps as in this video to access it? Her cars using coolant quickly too but can't see a leak, hence how I found this video. Btw if you haven't done the job yet I JUST did the job on 2012 s mini cooper and you dont have to remove both headlight or unbolt the whole black bar across just take out right side headlight and on same side unbolt only the 4 bolts to black bar it won't be fully disconnected but you will have enough clearance to pull up and down then just disconnect the hose then motor mount....then you can take off tire and iner fender and the engine will be down more because you disconnected the mounting and you'll have enough room to take off water pump polly and water pump itself!👌👌

      Thor Dehr would you rather remove the radiator? Or the timing belt? Which is necessary for other cars. It all evens out

    I like your video but behind my 2008 pump I found a broken round fiber washer about 1 1/4 inch in diameter. Is this important? Seems like a good time to replace it. I’m surprised it was not included with the new pump.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coolant bypass tube most likely. If so, replace as well as that's leaking.

    • @alanw5812
      @alanw5812 ปีที่แล้ว

      usually you won't see that , I think last time someone replace your thermoster housing up and down damage it, it should replace together, it hard to see because it's inside the engine block.

      @@ModMINI I actually JUST did the job today your video helped ALOT thank you what I do I watch 2 or 3 different videos and gather all the information from them and I'll do it my way....all i did was take tire off, and iner fender, then went to the top disconnected the right side headlight only not both there's no need too....then instead of disconnected the whole black peace just unbolt the side were you took the headlight out of take the 4 bolts out just to give you enough clearance to lift it....then disconnect hose, then you take off mounts after that you can loosen the belt from bottom or top I did from top had enough room...then the engine lowered so I could reach from the bottom unbolt water pump polly bolts then water pump itself.....saved me some time but all I wanted to say is you dont have to do the extra work......BTW I'm 20

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt there is any published value. Just make them tight enough that they don't fall out and loose enough that you don't twist off the bolt heads. Sorry, you just need to develop a feel for it. Practice on some old car parts if necessary.

    Hi, Have you encountered a R56 with whining noise coming from drive belt side? My R56 S recently developed the sound and some says it's the bad friction wheel on water pump (or the roller below it). The noise is somewhat like a supercharger whine on R53 and it's engine rpm dependent. The noise sounds like what's described in this video (although this is non-S) th-cam.com/video/w-dQJmeM8vA/w-d-xo.html any suggestion on what may cause this noise?

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably an idler pulley or the friction wheel between water pump and crank pulley. Could also be alternator.
