Sonia G. Hinoki Brush Set Review and Lotus Set Recommendations

- After using the Hinoki brushes for several weeks, I am ready to give my review and demo how I use the two brushes for you guys. The brushes are ultra soft and are made up of saikoho goat hair. Their shades are not found in any other brush in Sonia G.'s previously launched brushes. I'll also be going over the Lotus Set and which brushes from the set are my favorites.

I love the lotus base for cream contour, specially Tom Ford
That is a protip. I stopped using cream contours when I switched to powders, but the base brush is a perfect shape for contouring now that you pointed it out!
@@MichiMakesUp I never reach for anything else! Also for cream bronzers. For something more liquidy like the Charlotte tilbury contour I use the mini base from the fusion/keyaki line instead of the lotus base.
@@abbyk36 Smaller surface for something more emollient. That makes sense. Spoken like a fude enthusiast. :D
What about the Niji???? What do you think??
I didn’t pick up Niji Pro.🙈 Not cause I don’t think it’s good, but I got her Yakusugi and Hinoki sets so I sat out for Niji. I have the Rephr 22 (not that it’s the same as Niji), but it’s my current large bronzing brush. I was more interested in something that can do detailed bronzing work and was fluffy so the bigger Hinoki fit the bill for that.
Thank you for all of the videos going over these brushes. They are an investment. I finally went ahead and got a set and decided to go with the Hinoki.
I am so glad to hear Mely! I look forward to hearing how you like them when they arrive! So excited for you!
are you still enjoying your Hinoki set? i was looking at the Niji Pro but wasn't sure if the size would be too big for my face. i love that it buffs really well but Hinoki seems like a better fit and i love the little brush that comes with it! only thing is some people have experienced shedding with it. i noticed you said not to wet the base of the brush. when you're washing it, do you dip the brush into a small bowl of water to control how wet it gets? any cleaning tips appreciated as my only concern with it is how delicate it might be with regular use/cleaning. xx (ps do you have the Smooth Buffer? i was hoping Njii Pro could do both buffing and bronzing but apparently the flat top of the Smooth Buffer buffs highlight like nothing else, haha.)
I finished writing my reply and was searching for the brush spray I use in-between brush "baths" and the app did not save my comment. :( Here's my second attempt at answering!
The bigger brush from the Hinoki set is one of my favorites. It handles bronzers so so beautifully and the brushes are incredibly soft. The handles are decorative by design, but I just love how they feel. I prefer these handles to the classic tapered ones actually. For shedding, they've lost about 3-4 hairs total from washing and regular use. No issues with it shedding every time I use them or anything that would be concerning so far.
For cleaning the brushes, I pre-soap them on a ribbed rubber mat to work the suds into the bristles and loosen product. Then run the brush head under warm tap water and avoid the ferrule as to not damage the glue. Using a bowl of water is a good idea too as you can control how far to dip the brushes in. A few more care tips
I wash them no more often than once a month unless a brush is very dirty, but that is rare. The quick cleans using a brush spray usually does the trick. After washjng, I lay them flat to dry and squeeze as much water/moisture from the bristles as I can. Ideally, you hang the brushes upside down so any water would drip off the brush head.
Here's the spray I use. Are you in the UK? I wasn't able to find this on Sephora UK. bit.ly/3TwhQKu

Her Smooth Buffer is my single most favorite Sonia G. brush. If I could only purchase one backup brush, this one would be it. It's extremely effective on any kind of powder and baked gelee product you want applied all over the face.
@@MichiMakesUp oh wow okay, i will definitely try the Smooth Buffer first then! that was my initial plan but then i started to look at Niji Pro, etc etc haha. and you're so lucky your larger Hinoki hasn't shed much! multiple people who use fude have experienced shedding so consider your set a blessing! ty for the brush spray recommendation too, i am US-based :). x
@@hijennwuI quick cleaned the Hinoki set yesterday without any shedding. The shedding must be more drastic with the others if they've noticed to be an issue. I am happy with my set. :)
I'm really amazed with the Hinoki set. I use them everyday. These will all go very quickly 👍🏻
I see them in your IG posts and was so happy you got them to try. I think these brushes have very good value for being a collector’s item.
Thank you Michi! Very useful guidance.
Glad you think so! My pleasure!
Just in time for the restock ❤️ thank you
I hope it’s helpful to your decision making!
If the Hinoki set will be around when the gift card event will occur I will grab it but most likely they don't. I have the Reprh 22 but I am not using so often I much rather grab for the SG Niji Pro.
That would be wonderful if the set or even some lotus brushes are still available during fall’s giftcard event. I’d like another worker and builder brush. I haven’t picked up the Niji pro! It’s on my list.
@@MichiMakesUp usually they restock most of brushes but this year in April May it wasn’t much to shop. I caught Niji pro on the last restock, before the gift card event. I know how is it, I have on my list the bigger brush from the Fusion set ( I always forget the name but you show it in this video )
Hi Michi thank you for the detailed review. I did order the Lotus set yesterday. I wasn't going to but.. blame Tracey😂😂! I am excited about them and as you said they are first of all very beautiful ❤️. I hope you are doing great. When is the due date ( if you can tell, of course )
Tracey did not seem like she was into fude when I first met her here, but slowly she has converted. haha I hope you love the Lotus set! It would be all you need for travel if you're trying to take no more than a handful of brushes. My due date is in a couple of weeks so coming up very soon! Have a lot of prep left. Does not help the dresser for the nursery hasn't arrived.
@@MichiMakesUp I can tell I wasn’t into fude .. until i got a SG brush in the Beautylish lucky bag last year then I slowly was converted to. My Lotus set will be here on Monday - I got expedite shipping. I wish you easy delivery and I hope everything will be ready until the due date. It will be nice to be around or on your birthday I remember it was just couple of days before mine 18-19 ..?
Very helpful thanks
My pleasure, Amanda!
Hey michi you are looking beautiful love your blouse or dress …. I would like these but I have way too many brushes so going to be strong 🙏🏻🤣🤣 have a lovely day …xx
Stay strong Michelle! It can be so hard. I always get convinced after reading her blogs on the brushes. 😌
@@MichiMakesUp I’m gonna try 🤣🤣 it is so hard as her brushes are amazing … I have five in my collection and love them.. I can do it I can do it I can do it 😆♥️♥️
I ordered the Lotus set :/
I am happy for you Tracey. The Lotus set is also made up of saikoho hairs and is quite soft. It’s going to look beautiful with your makeup collection.
@@MichiMakesUp Yeah, 'cause it's pink 😉 No but I know she only makes amazing brushes.
Great informative review. Thanks Michi. Hoping you are feeling good and your foetus is growing well. 😀Deb
My pleasure, Deb! We are in the home stretch with lil bean who is not so little anymore. haha Sleeping, sitting and standing has its challenges, but we are taking it day by day.
i was kind of interested til i found out they use goat hair.. beauty should be without cruelty. such a shame..
Many fude brushes are made up of natural hairs. It has a long history in Japanese culture. If you are looking for quality synthetics, BK Beauty and Sigma brushes are highly rated. Fude manufacturer are also dabbling in more with synthetics as well though, the tech isn’t there yet to create brushes that are very comparable to natural hairs. I hope it gets better over time.
Wow Michi just in time I am going to buy this exact two sets!!! 🪷🤍 thank you 🙏🏼
Ahh I’m so excited for you! So much to play with when they arrive. 😍
