- I'm still trying to convince myself that this video was a good idea! 🙈
I felt bad that some of you couldn’t watch my ‘2016/5000 subscribers’ video on your phones, so I’ve put together some (rather cringey!) old clips of me riding taken between 2009-2012, featuring some wonderful ponies that you won’t have seen on my channel before!!
My riding in some of the clips is downright horrendous, but hopefully you can see how much I improved within those 3 years (and hopefully I’ve improved a bit more in the 5 years since…!) The video also contains two falls for your entertainment 😉
I love looking back on clips like this as it makes me appreciate how far I've come as a rider, and how lucky I've been to ride such patient and willing ponies since I've been at this yard - I certainly haven't flown over a jump again since the cross country fall!!
🚨For a bit of balance, I would appreciate it if anyone leaving rude or negative criticism/tips/advice would also donate at least £1 to a charity of their choice 😊

Never be embarrassed of your old videos, they only demonstrate how much you've improved. You actually have a really good seat in all these videos and definitely have a natural skill in the saddle, you should be very proud

Omg! The piebald is adorable! As is Sam! Oh, I wish you had more videos of them. Was Sam a little Arab mix? I have an Arab sport horse, basically a fancy term for Arabian crossed with a warmblood. Ted looks to be a little uneducated about jumps and seems to throw himself at them, not quite picking up his front legs either. It's fun to watch old videos and see how far you've come.
Raven Sam is pure Welsh section B 😊 Ted was actually a pretty nice little jumper, he was just struggling a lot to make the distances in the grid work clips, which is why he’s throwing his legs forward over them! x

Sara M I've jumped bigger, but have never got it on camera, but to be honest I've never been very bothered about height, I'd rather focus on & improve my overall technique 😊

Actually it was one of the few times my body protector has come in handy. I landed right on my lower back on the edge of the jump, but the body protector spread the impact out and it didn't hurt at all 😊

i am not being rude, genuine question.... is it common in Europe for people to ride with their feet all the way in the irons? i come from Canada and we are ALL taught to have the ball of our foot in the irons and nothing more (big toe ball) i am just curious. i have noticed with many riders from Europe and at all levels.
Erica Bigras We are taught to have only the ball of our foot in the stirrup too. Unsurprising, as an inexperienced rider trying new exercises for the first time, my feet didn't always stay in the correct place!

Thanks! Better now than it was in these clips! but to be honest I think my feet still end up through the stirrups half the time 😅
PonyCam if you want a trick, i used to do, and make my students, take irons/stirrups off the leathers, and ride with no stirrup and hold the stirrup on your feet. your legs become longer, stronger, your seat becomes deeper, and your heals are forced down, in order to keep the stirrup on your feet. :) its tough but helps tremendously.
Hey a quick question. You seem like you've been riding for quite a while and obviously you do a great job, but why don't you jump higher?
Ruta Kr. A few reasons:
1. There’s no need to. I’ve never based the level of my riding on how high I can jump, but rather, how much I have improved in terms of being able to ride more difficult horses successfully, and how much better I am at improving the horse I’m riding’s way of going in a lesson, compared to how I used to do it.
2. It’s a riding school, and one that it’s very careful of its horses legs (there are ponies who are still sound and going cross country schooling & jumping small showjumping courses into their late 20’s and early 30’s at this yard). The horses are often jumped several times a week, sometimes twice a day, so to jump ‘big’ would be incredibly unfair on them and risk their health much more than a privately owned horse that may only jump once or twice a week.
3. Connected to the above, if I owned my own horse I would almost certainly have tried jumping higher, but I don’t. I am only able to jump what is appropriate for the riding school horses & ponies, which I don’t mind at all as jumping any bigger is of much less interest to me now compared to when I was a teenager and assumed ‘bigger was better’.
4. A lot of people assume that because I have been riding a long time, I should have improved a lot more that it appears I have, but I ride for one hour a week in a riding school and can only do whichever exercises/jumps my instructor tells me to - improvement comes from repetition and if I were riding 5 times a week on my own horse I would improve a lot faster. If you learn the piano and only got to practice it once a week, you are never going to get to the same level as someone who buys their own piano and gets the practice whenever they want, playing whichever songs they choose, throughout the week/month/year.

I noticed from 2009 and 2012 Your stirrups where very high up touching your chaps and your heels where pointed but U are a Amazing rider!
Where around is your stables based?. are your horses all owned by the riders we see in this video ? do you do lessons? and if so do you do lessons with children (about 14 years of age)?
nature Lover122 The stables is based in Oxfordshire, UK. All the horses in this video belong to the riding school (there's only one rider in this video). Lessons are mixed age - in my current lesson the age range is from about 9yrs old to 60 😊

Because it's completely normal for all riders to have obvious flaws in their position when they are inexperienced and still learning - no one starts out riding like Charlotte Dujardin! :-) x

Who was your favourite and least favourite to ride
Primrose14 16 I honestly loved riding all of them! Casey was the most difficult as she would sometimes be a bit mare-ish or put in a very dirty stop at a fence, but she also taught me an awful lot. Ted will always be my favourite because he's the first pony I rode at this yard and the one who I learnt the most/improved fastest on :-)

Did you ever go through a loss of confidence stage?
Not really (fortunately!). There were times when I'd be a bit worried if I'd had a bad ride the time before (fallen off, been bolted with, etc.), but because I always got straight back on when I fell off, or did the exercise again if it went wrong, even the bad rides ended on a positive note which meant my confidence was back up for the next lesson 😊

Where did all those horses go
Topzoe Jay and Toby have both sadly passed away since these videos were taken (they were both quite old), Sam went back to his owners as he was only at the yard for a year to be brought on, and Ted & Casey are still at the yard, but they’re both older now so I don’t ride them anymore :-)

Just saying, you really pull on the horses head over the jumps and that is very painful and difficult for them because then they can’t stretch out as much as they need too. Just a tip.
Firstly, I disagree with you slightly, while I was not very good at giving with my hands (still something I struggle with today!), I always let the reins slip through if there was/is pressure from the horses mouth during the jump - it doesn't look pretty, but it stops the horse getting pulled if I get the jump wrong. Secondly, the most recent clip in this video is over 6 years old (which is why the title is 'old riding raws' and I put the dates on all of the clips) and I have improved a lot now I am an adult rider and have many more years experience :-)

Actually it was the one and only time my body protector has been some use! It stopped me landing with my back directly on the sharp edge, so I barely even had any bruising :-)
